Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Aaron Cherry was born between 1756 and 1774 (son of Cader Cherry and Judah (Judith) Burnett); died between 1830 and 1840 in Edgecombe Co, North Carolina.

Aaron married (Mrs. Aaron) Cherry after 1790. (Mrs. was born between 1766 and 1784; died after 1810 in of, Edgecombe Co, Norh Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. (2 sons) Cherry was born between 1801 and 1810; died after 1810 in Edgecombe Co, North Carolina.
    2. (daughter) Cherry was born between 1801 and 1810 in Edgecombe Co, North Carolina; died after 1810.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Cader Cherry was born about 1735 in Virginia (son of Lemuel Cherry and Gatsey Ann Llewellyn); died before 27 May 1782 in Edgecombe Co, North Carolina.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Possessions: 27 May 1782, Edgecombe Co, North Carolina; intestate

    Notes:

Cader Cherry [C1a8h], son of Lemuel Cherry and Gatsey Ann Llewellyn, was born in 1735 in Norfolk Co VA or in Bertie Co NC. He probably lived in or near Edgecombe Co in 1762 because he witnessed a sale of 497 acres from Ebenezer Folsom to William Matthews, both "of Edgecombe Co;" Cader "signed" his name with the letter "K." Cader died by
27 May 1782 in Edgecombe Co, where he was living in 1779. He lived in Edgecombe Co at the end of his life because he, Peter May, and Mark May were witnesses to the 3 February 1777 sale of 200 acres from James Smith of Pitt Co to William Mayo of Edgecombe Co. And on 11 February 1779 Thomas Rhodes of Bertie Co, planter, sold 640 acres to "Cader Cherry, planter of Edgecombe Co" for £150. The land was in Coneto Pocosin and was called Dark Island. It was next to the property of Robert Hardy (see Levi Cherry, Cader's son). Witnesses were Robert Hardy, William Skyles, and Elizabeth Rhodes. On 18 May 1779 Cader sold 94 acres to Robert Hardy, land next to Cader's land and along Coneto Pocosin in Edgecombe Co 9 (Deed book E, page 140). And he sold 220 acres, land along Coneto Pocosin and next to his own land, to Robert Hardy on 5 January 1780 (Deed book E, page 4) for £400. Witnesses of this last sale were "Robert 'X' Hardy Jr, Millisant 'X' Hardy, and Sarah 'X' Knox." It is assumed here that Robert Hardy Jr was a son of the buyer, and Millicent was probably Robert Jr's wife. Who Sarah Knox was is not known. Neither Hardy man could sign his name, but made an "X" instead. Cader's wife was named in the sale as "Juda Cherry." All parties were "of Edgecombe County."

    Possessions:
Cader died intestate soon before 27 May 1782, when his inventory was taken by his brother William in Edgecombe Co.

Cader married Judah (Judith) Burnett about 1755. Judah (daughter of Matthew* (Matthis/Matthus) Burnett, Sr. and Mrs. Sarah* (..) Burnett (Everitt?), (prob related?)) was born about 1742; died after 1805 in of, Martin Co, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Judah (Judith) Burnett was born about 1742 (daughter of Matthew* (Matthis/Matthus) Burnett, Sr. and Mrs. Sarah* (..) Burnett (Everitt?), (prob related?)); died after 1805 in of, Martin Co, North Carolina.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Other-Begin: Mar 1781, Martin Co, North Carolina

    Notes:

She was Judith Burnett. "Judah Cherry" was named as a daughter of Matthew Burnett and wife Sarah _____ in Matthew's Martin Co 12 December 1790 will (Book B1, page 216).

    Other-Begin:
Judah was a witness of the undated will of Henry Culpepper, which was probated in March 1781. Therefore, if Judith was at least age 18 when she was a witness to the Culpepper will, she was born by 1763, and married by 1781.

her brother John was an executor of the same will.

    Notes:

    Judith's and Cader's probable children
    were-
    1. Levi Cherry, b abt 1755
    2. William Cherry (Willie Cherry in 1800), b 1756-1774, lived in Edgecombe Co and was married by 1790. They had a daughter by 1790; in 1800 he had a son and daughter born
    1791-1800.
    3. William Cherry, lived in Edgecombe Co in 1790 (there were two William Cherry families there in 1790). This William was married and had a daughter.
    4. Willis Cherry, b 1756-1774. He had a young wife and three daughters born 1791-1800.
In 1790 he lived alone, and was shown as Wiley Cherry.
    5. James Cherry, b 1774 or before, had a wife, two daughters, and two sons born 1775-1790, and lived in Edgecombe Co in 1790. He was not found in Edgecombe Co
    after 1790.
    6. Robert Cherry, b 1755 or before, lived in Edgecombe Co in 1790, unmarried. In 1800 he had a wife Mary Worsley, born 1758 and 2 sons and 2 daughter born 1791-1800.
One son was Theopilus Cherry, b 1800. One dau was Peggy Cherry, b 1798.
    7. Wright Cherry, was recently married by 1790 and lived in Edgecombe Co. They had no children in their home then.
    8. Aaron Cherry, b 1756-1774, lived in Edgecombe Co in 1800 and 1810; he had a wife the same age, and had two sons born 1791-1800. His sons in the 1810 census were born 1801-1810. Aaron's wife was born 1766-1784. Aaron died Edgecombe Co in
    1830s. They had a daughter born 1801-1810.
    9. Lemuel Cemetery, b 1774 or before, had a wife, two daughters, a son born by 1774, and two sons born 1775-1790. They lived in Edgecombe Co in 1790.
Children#2 to #9 are assumed (by Source JY) to be Cader's children from their close proximity to each other in the 1790 census, or were gransons of Cader. Many of them were
buyers at Wright's estate sale in 1804, and Cader was the only very early Cherry male in the area who could have been the father or grandfater, and who was born early enough.
Evidence is flimsy, but for now this is all we have. Cader is just the best bet.

    Children:
    1. Levi Cherry was born about 1755; died on 24 Feb 1824.
    2. William Cherry, (son or grandson?) was born between 1756 and 1774; died after 1800 in of, Edgecombe Co, Norh Carolina.
    3. William Cherry was born about 1760; died after 1790 in of, Edgecombe Co, Norh Carolina.
    4. Willis "Wiley" Cherry was born between 1756 and 1774; died after 1800 in of, Edgecombe Co, Norh Carolina.
    5. James Cherry was born about 1765; died after 1790 in of, Edgecombe Co, Norh Carolina.
    6. Robert Cherry was born before 1755; died after 1900 in of, Edgecombe Co, Norh Carolina.
    7. Harrell Wright Cherry was born in 1756; died in 1804 in Edgecombe Co, North Carolina.
    8. 1. Aaron Cherry was born between 1756 and 1774; died between 1830 and 1840 in Edgecombe Co, North Carolina.
    9. Lemuel Cemetery Cherry, (son or grandson?) was born between 1756 and 1774; died after 1790 in of, Edgecombe Co, Norh Carolina.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Lemuel Cherry was born about 1710; died after 1740 in of, Norfolk Co, Virginia, or Bertie Co, North Carolina.

Lemuel married Gatsey Ann Llewellyn about 1933. Gatsey was born about 1715; died after 1740 in of, Norfolk Co, Virginia, or Bertie Co, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Gatsey Ann Llewellyn was born about 1715; died after 1740 in of, Norfolk Co, Virginia, or Bertie Co, North Carolina.
    Children:
    1. 2. Cader Cherry was born about 1735 in Virginia; died before 27 May 1782 in Edgecombe Co, North Carolina.

  3. 6.  Matthew* (Matthis/Matthus) Burnett, Sr. was born about 1715; died after 12 Dec 1790 in Martin Co, North Carolina.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Will: 12 Dec 1790, Martin Co (prev Halifax Co), North Carolina

    Notes:

Judah Burnett had brothers James Burnett, Matthew Burnett Jr, John Burnett, and sisters Mary, married to _____ Forman, Jean, married to _____ Ballentine, and Elizabeth, married
to _____ Ballard. All sisters were married by the end of 1790 (Martin Co will book B1,page 216). An executor and witness of the 3 February 1773 will in Martin Co of the John
Hynes will (Book B1, page 437) were Judah's brothers James and John. Therefore, they were probably born by 1750. John Burnett was also an executor of the 1781 will of Henry
Culpepper, while Judah Cherry was a witness.

In the 1785 Martin Co state census Matthew Burnett was living in district 7 (with one son under age 21, and three females in the house).

James Burnett (with four sons under 21, and four females) and John Burnett (with one son under 21, eight females, and seven slaves) lived nearby, close to Jonathan Cherry and
Ephraim Burnett (who had three females in his house).

The only Ballard families in district 7 (the Burnett families were only in district 7, the Halifax end of Martin Co) were Elias Ballard, (over the age of 60, with three females); Elisha Ballard (with two sons under age 21, two females, and seven slaves); and Jesse Ballard, living alone. There were no Foreman or Ballentine families. This information about the Burnett families helps to establish that most, if not all of Judah's siblings, were well established by 1785, many with children, and therefore were likely born by 1750, or before. The families of John, Matthew (with Ballard next door), James, and Ephraim Burnett were still in the area near Jonathan Cherry in 1790.

Generation: 4

  1. 14.  William Everitt was born about 1690 in Nansemond Co, Virginia; died in 1775 in Martin Co, North Carolina.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1704, Nansemond Co, Virginia; Virginia Quit Rent Roll
    • Residence: Between 1730 and 1740, Martin Co, North Carolina
    • Property: 1732, Martin Co, North Carolina

    Notes:

    Name: William Everett
    Given Name: William
    Surname: Everett
    Sex: M
Birth: Abt 1690 in Nansemond County, Virginia, Formed 1643 (Now City Of Suffolk)
Death: in Martin County, North Carolina Formed 1774 From Halifax And Tyrrell Counties

The 1704 Virginia Quit Rent Roll listed Simon Everett in Isle of Wight County and William Everett in Nansemond County. When Bob Everett's ancestor Simon Everett bought land in NC, he said he was "of Nansemond County, Virginia." The William Everett family who moved from Nansemond to Martin County in the 1730's had strong Turner connections. Wills and deeds prove that William Everett married Sarah Speir, daughter of physician James Speir (see below) of Nansemond Co, VA. Sarah and William Everett named a son James, probably after Sarah's father. They also named a son Samuel Turner Everett. Sarah and William Everett's daughter Sarah married John Pollard. Sarah and John Pollard named one son Everett Pollard and one son Turner Pollard. I would guess that either William Everett's mother was a Turner or that Sarah Speir's mother was a Turner.

The 1704 quit rent roll for Isle of Wight County, Virginia listed Henry Turner. No Turners appeared in the Nansemond list.

I'd like to make a connection with anyone researching the parents and descendants of William EVERETT/EVERITT, b. 1700. By 1723, he owned land on the north side of the Chowan River in Chowan County, a neighbor to possible relative, Nathaniel Everett. He married Laviah [Sarah] UNKNOWN in Chowan County before 1723. In 1732 he purchased land in Bertie Precinct, on the south side of the "Marotoke" River (?), which became Halifax and Tyrrell Counties, and later became Martin County. Here he raised his family:

4 known daughters - Patience (m. Mr. BUTLER), Ann (m. Mr. WAHOON)[or Mahoon], Laviah [Sarah] (m. John POLLARD), Mary (m. Mr. BALLARD).
4 known sons - James, John, William Jr., and Samuel Turner (m. Amy UNKNOWN).

William's will was probated in 1774 in Martin County.

If you see a connection, kindly contact me.
