    Movements of David Shelton
I first found David Shelton in Rowan County, North Carolina when he was made the executor of the will of Jesse Jenkins, Dec. 1802. On Feb 20,1808 (DB 21 p.262-265) David Shelton was in court with Joel Jenkins, Martha Jenkins widow of Jesse Jenkins, Patsy Shelton wife of David Shelton and other Jenkinses to sell land they all inherited from Jesse Jenkins. After 1808 some of the Jenkins family including widow Martha moved to Butler County, Kentucky. David appears (perhaps) in Muhlenberg nearby in 1810, then Butler in 1820. Also moving from Rowan County North Carolina to Butler County, Kentucky are the Henlein/Henline/Haneline/Hanely brothers, Jacob and Elijah who lived near the Jenkins family in Rowan County. Jacob married Bethiah Jenkins, daughter of Jesse Jenkins. In 1819 Elijah Haneline (Hanely) married Elizabeth Shelton in Butler County, Kentucky. Sometime around 1824 David Shelton, Elijah Haneline, Jacob Haneline and some of the Jenkinses moved to Weakley/Henry County, Tennessee. David Shelton bought 92 acres from Hayden Wells in Weakley County in Dec of 1824 proven by oaths of Elijah Hanline and Jacob Hanline [Court Minute Book, Weakley Co, p.129]. D. Shelton and E. Hainline in 1825 Weakley County received a grant of land near John Moore and John Moore Jr. On Jan. 2, 1826, Henry County, Tennessee David Shelton received grants: #24457 of 15 acres, #24468 75 acres, #24469 92 acres and jointly with Elijah Hanlin grant #24470 for 1000 acres. In 1827 on the Weakley county tax list both David Shelton and Elijah Haneline were noted to be gone. By 1830 both of them were in Calloway County, Kentucky.

    Notes:

A researcher for this line is Shirley Davis through the son Thomas and his son James b. 1770. One excellent researcher, Hildred Shelton of Virginia, a Knights5 member, wrote to our group regarding this matter on March 15, 2002. She said that the James Shelton who married Philapenia, who died in Henry Co. Va, in 1784 is not from the line of Ralph Shelton (d. 1733, Middlesex County). He was not the son of Ralph Shelton (d. 1789 in Henry County), either, as SHELTON DNA tests have proven (see the ROOTS-L mailing list for SHELTON for more DNA results). Hildred also wrote: The James Shelton who married Philapenia is thought by some to be of the Hanover, Rural Plains, Currioman Bay, VA., "Red House" Louisa County, Va., line of Sheltons. Kenyon Stevenson worked on this particular family for years. However, DNA testing for Rural Plains has not matched any tests from the line of James, the son of Ralph Shelton, d. 1733 Middlesex County. James, who was born 2-23-1726, d. 1798, was in Lunenberg County and his will is on file in Lunenburg Will Book 4, p. 228. The name of his wife was Jane and his daughter Heniretta m. Young Shelton, son of Daniel Shelton, b. 5-17-1729, d. 1808/9 Pittsylvania County, Va.
