    Notes:

    Shepherd was born in Louisiana and married Charlotte Montgomery in St Helena\\\'s Parish. They had 14 children. Part of them were born in Louisiana and part in Texas. Some time after 1848 he moved his family to Texas.

    By 1850 Shepherd and Charlotte had moved to Texas. According to one source (poss. Ethel Corder?) they settled first in Colorado City, Mitchell Co**. In 1851 he was on the tax rolls for Mitchell Co. He paid a Poll Tax of .50, State Tax of .50, & County Tax of .25 cents. He remained on the Tax rolls until 1854 when he moved his family to Burnet Co.

    **Note that as Terrell Mullins has pointed out, this cannot be correct. In 1851 Colorado City did not exist and neither did Mitchell County. Perhaps they were in Colorado County?

    Shepherd and Charlotte lived in Burnet Co. until their deaths. From 1855-1861 Shepherd was on the Tax Rolls for Burnet county, in 1855 he had Property valued at $95, he paid Poll Tax of .75, State tax of .64, and County Tax of .32 cents.

    In 1856 Shepherd had the following live stock that was valued at, 2 horses $60, 18 Cattle $90, 1 wagon & 2 Oxen $180, total value $330 dollars.

    He paid poll tax .75, state tax .50, & county tax of .50 cents.

    In 1857 he paid poll tax .75, state tax $1.00.

    1858 no record of taxes being paid.

    1859 Shepherd had 2 horses $80, 1 set of tools $20, total value $100.00 dollars.

    He paid poll tax $1.00, State tax .68, county tax .68 cents.

    1860 Shepherd paid taxes on wagon and Oxen valued at $380.00
    He paid Poll tax $1.00, State tax .97, & County tax of .97 cents.

    1861 The total value of property was $240.00

    He paid Poll tax $1.00, State tax $1.19, & County tax of .85 cents.

    Private Shepherd Bayless Corder enlisted 14 May 1862 in San Antonio, serving until his death on 1 Aug 1862. He served in Company I, 3rd Texas Infantry, of the Confederate States of America. He served in Captain Eli Tool\\\'s Company, of the Texas Volunteer Infantry.

    On October 25, 1859, William Barton, Charlotte Cavin, and Sina Harvey deeded seven acres of land to S.B.Corder, John Harvey, and Lewis Thomas, trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, for church and school purposes (Volume E Page 8, DRBC). The location of the property was in Backbone Valley where the Crownover Chapel now stands (1997). Even though the rock structure was begun, the onset of the War Between the States brought a halt to the construction. On November 10, 1873, an \\\"Article of Agreement to Complete the School and Chapel\\\" was filed in Volume I, page 143, DRBC, and the building was finally completed.

    ==============================
    Very little is known about Bailis Corder in 1995. It is thought the best possibility for his parentage is the will of John Corder, wife Gracy, in Smith Co, Tenn in 1814, which names a son called Bali. This John could be the son of another John, wife Patience, from Fauquier or Culpepper Co. Va, or Caswell Co. NC. Bailis and his wife, Parazade lived in Lincoln and Green Co Kentucky, where some of their children were born, before moving to St. Helena Parish, where Bailis died about 1822. His wife, Paraz ade apparently lived in EBR with her daughter Elizabeth and her husband Ja cob Krumholt after the death of Bailis and in 1844 gave Elizabeth her undivided 1/6 of some property left her by her father Thomas Stone in 1830 in Mercer County, Ky. (Courte sy of Billie Lipscomb of Baton Rouge, a descendant of Elizabeth Krumholt)
