    (Book 3 Book of Wills, Clark Co., KY) .
    In the name of God Amen, I Cuthbert Combs of Clarke County &n State of Kentucky being well in health and of sound mind calling into mind the mortality of my body & knowing it is appointed for all men once to die do make this my last will & testament in the following manner & form..
    As Ten of my Children viz. Betsey Edwards formerly Betty Combs Joseph Combs Benjamin Combs Polly Evans formerly Polly Combs John Combs Sythe Payne formerly Sythe Combs Susan Richman [sic] formerly Susan Combs Cuthbert Combs Sally Evans formerly Sally Combs and Nancy Payne formerly Nancy Combs have married and received part of my estate. Therefore I desire they should not receive anymore until the death of my wife Sally Combs. But my two sons Fielding Alexander Combs and Evan Ennis Combs I give and bequeath the following real and personal property I give and bequeath to my son Fielding Alexander Combs a Negro boy named James a son to _____ to him and his heirs forever also a bed & furniture a cow and calf thirty barrels of corn and one thousand weight of pork..
    Then I give and bequeath to my son Ennis Combs a Negro man as son to Sarah to him and his heirs forever a bed and furniture a horse saddle and bridle a cow and calf thirty barrels of corn and one thousand weight of pork to be received when he attains the age of one and twenty years or before if he marries. Then I gave and bequeath to my two sons Fielding Alexander Combs and Ennis Combs one thousand acres of land lying on Sympsons_re_(?) Creek in Nelson County and adjoining Wm. Brasears' Preem___ion(?) on the upper end and extending up the creek for quantity to have and to hold to them and there heirs in fee simple. Then I gave and bequeath to my loving wife Sally Combs the use and occupation of all the land with its appurtenances contained within my settlement & preemption(?) on Howard's upper Creek in Clarke County except what I have deeded to Benjamin Combs, Cuthbert Combs, William Edwards and Christopher Dawson and after the death of my wife Sally Combs I give and bequeath the last aforesaid tract of land which I loaned to my wife during her life to my two sons Fielding Alexander Combs and Ennis Combs to have and to hold to them and their heirs in fee simple. Then I give and bequeath to my wife Sally Combs during her life the use and hire and their increase Viz. old Dick Old Tom and Sarah his wife little Tom and Nancy children to the said Sarah Willes Charles Vilet(?) Azzy and Frank children to said Nancy Winny George Isaac Betty Allen & Stephen children to the said Winny I also give & bequeath to my wife Sally Combs during her life the use and hire of same negroes and their increase that are coming to me after the death of my mother from a deed made by Benjamin Bullet to my father John Combs and my mother Seth Combs (as the deed will more fully shew) Then as the title to the negroes I have given to my daughter Nancy Payne Viz a Negro boy named Dennis and a Negro girl named Hester is likely to be disputed; also the title to the negroes I have given my daughter Sally Evans viz. a negroe boy named George and a negro woman named Nellie and her two children is likely to be disputed also the title to a negro boy named Sam whom I have given to my daughter Susannah Richmond is likely to be disputed and the title to a negro man named Dick whom I have given to my son Cuthbert Combs is likely to be disputed. and .
    Therefore if either of the aforesaid individuals viz. Nancy Payne Sally Evans Susannah Richmond or Cuthbert Combs lose their negroes or any of them by the course of law desire that the same may be purchased and redelivered to their respective owners or that each of the aforesaid individuals may be compensated according to their loss of receiving negroes of equal value from amongst those I have loaned to my wife Sally Combs Then I desire after the death of my wife Sally Combs that all the aforesaid negroes I have loaned her and the increase of said negroes also the money that is coming to me after the death of my mother by a _____(?) of my brother Fielding Combs which money I loaned to my wife Sally Combs during her life may be equally distributed among the following legatees, viz. Betsey Edward, Joseph Combs Benjamin Combs Susan Richmond Polly Evans Sythe Payne John Combs Cuthbert Combs Sally Evans Nancy Payne Fielding Alexander Combs & Ennis Combs Then I give and bequeath to my wife Sally Combs all of the remainder of my personal property viz. still(?) hogs horses cattle sheep and also all my household kitchen and furniture and plantations utensils viz. wagons ploughs and also all the money I have in possession and due me by bonds and bills notes or accounts to pay my debts and defray the expense of lawsuits..
    Lastly I appoint my loving wife Sally Combs executrix and my two sons Fielding Alexander Combs and Tennis [sic] Combs. .

    Edward Payne, eldest son of William Sr, and Alicia, his wife, was the last owner of Payne's Manor in Virginia. he sold it in 1785 and moved to Kentucky the same year and settled on Town Fork, one and a half miles from Lexington, Kentucky.

    To my wife SETH Combs during her natural life the following fifteen slaves (named) which were given to her and myself by deed from her father Benjamin BULLET.

    To my son CUTHBERT the land he lives on and which were conveyed to him heretofore by me, and also 1/3 part of the slaves devised his Mother and their future increase, after the death of his Mother.

    To my daughter BETTY CALLMERS, Negro Tim, in the possession of her husband, which I formerly gave her, and 1/3 part of the slaves devised her mother, after the decease of her Mother.

    To my daughter in law SALLY Combs, Negro James during her widowhood to support her children; & after her marriage or decease, I give said slave to her children to be equally divided among all her children and their heirs, which she hath had by my son John, as well those children born before as after marriage.

    To all the children of my son JOHN, as well those born before as after marriage, their heirs, after decease of their Grand Mother 1/3 part of the aforesaid slaves devised her & their future increase.

    To my son JOSEPH and heirs, Negroes Jerry, Melinda and Leah now in his possession and their future increase.

    Lend wife SETH during her widowhood the plantation and lands I now live on on the south side of Beaver Dam run and after her marriage or decease I give the same to my son Joseph and his heirs.

    To my son ENNIS and heirs, Negroes Harry, Venus, Hester and Dinah and their increase, and also the tract of land he now lives on, and 803 acs. of land in Kentucky, a part of the Negroes are now in his possession.

    Note: This is apparently either in error, or this will is also recorded in another county as an abstract by Combs Stacy Researcher Barbara Stacy Mathews shows that following the last paragraph above (Benjamin Combs) are mentioned aditional devisees: son Fielding and daughter, Sarah.     At Court held for Stafford County Feb. 13, 1786, this inventory was ordered to be recorded. Added by Order of Oct. Ct. 1786, the crop of tobacco?3733 lbs?Ditto corn, 60 barrels.

    John Combs, Sr. may, however, have been deceased by 1 Sep 1784 based on the following record in which his son, Benjamin Combs, at that time a resident of Frederick County, VA, deeded land (possibly a share of his inheritance?) to (his brother?) Joseph Combs:

    1784 Sep 1 (Stafford Co D&W Bk 8 May 1780-13 Mar 1786:348-349) Sept. 1, 1784. Benjamin Combs & Sarah his wife of Frederick Co. to Joseph Combs of Stafford, 100 pds. for 190 acs. in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, upon long branch, b/b lands of Robt. KNOX, John Combs and land leased to Richd. READ.
