Subject: [MDSTMARY] Humphrey and Col. Nathaniel Pope
Source: "Genealogical Memoranda of the Quisenberry Family In Virginia" by Anderson Chenault Quisenberry

By DNA testing my Moses Cushenberry matches with the male testers that can prove their lineage back to John Quisenberry, the immigrant, that married Anne Pope , dau of Humphrey Pope and Elizabeth Hawkins. Many have my Humphrey as the son of Col. Nathaniel Pope which is not true but there are connections it seems.

I have been receiving emails off the mailing list and there is no data that backs up the claim Humphrey Pope that married Elizabeth Hawkins is the son of Col. Nathaniel Pope.

John Quisenberry (my line) seemed to be around them and he married Anne Pope who many say is the daughter of Humphrey Pope.

"John Quisenberry, so far as is known, had but three children, all sons-John, William, and Humphrey. John Quisenberry's old homestead is still standing. It is a small, unpretentious house, built more with a view to durability than for show, and it has weathered the storms of more than two centuries. It adjoins the lands taken up in 1651 by Thomas Pope, and afterwards sold to Hon. Thomas Lee, who erected upon them about 1730 the historic "Stratford Hall," still standing, the birthplace of Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, two signers of the Declaration of Independence, and of Robert E. Lee, the great Confederate General; and it is only a few miles away from the site of "Wakefield", the first home of the Washingtons in America, where George Washington was born. It is not known what, if anything, John Quisenberry called his home; but it is now known as the "Old Quisenberry Place", and is owned by a man named Jenkins, who has made it the model farm of Westmoreland county."

"John Quisenberry, the pioneer, is described in old legal documents as a "planter", and his own depositions show that he sometimes acted as a surveyor's assistant. The deeds still in existence show that he owned three hundred acres of land; and he almost certainly owned other lands, the records of which were destroyed by fire at Northumberland Courthouse and at Richmond. He and his family were communicants of the Anglican or Episcopalian Church, and were members of the famous old Pope's Creek Church, one of the two original churches in the Washington Parish of Westmoreland county."

"John Quisenberry, as has been shown, had three sons-John, William, and Humphrey, and it is from Humphrey, the youngest of the three, that the Kentucky branch of the family are descended. Under the laws of primogeniture that then prevailed in Virginia, as well as under his father's will, William, the eldest son (John having died in 1695), inherited practically the whole of his father's estate; but Humphrey had been making his own way. We find from the records that on July 6, 1695, he bought of Christopher Pritchett one hundred acres of land. This land, "lying on the north side of the great road that goeth from Pope's Creek to the head of Perpeto Creek", it transpires, was in old Rappahannock county, which comprised portions of the present counties of King George, Richmond and Essex-and was formed about 1660, and was swallowed up by the formation of those counties some years afterwards, disappearing entirely. The present Rappahannock county, Virginia, in an entirely different locality, was not formed until 1820."

"John Quisenberry, Sr. "the Pioneer" died in Westmoreland County, VA. He married Anne Pope, sister of Humphrey Pope. He was a planter and sometimes acted as a surveyor's assistant. John settled in Virginia at some time prior to 1651, for the most part, in the "Northern Neck" of Northumberland and Westmoreland Counties. In 1651, he assisted in surveying the "Stratford" or Thomas Lee estate in Northumberland County, VA (now Westmoreland County), and in 1666, he bought one hundred acres of land adjoining that estate when it was still the property of Thomas Pope, of whose heirs Thomas Lee bought it. Thomas Lee erected the historic Stratford Hall about 1730 on the land. John also bought one hundred acres of land from John Butler in 1656 in Westmoreland County, VA, and in 1691, bought from Malachi Peale his remaining interest of two hundred acres in a patent. John's will is dated 23 Nov 1714 was probated 27 Nov 1717. John and Ann's children were John, William, and Humphrey.

Col. Humphrey Pope was not a son of Colonel Nathaniel Pope although he was almost certainly a younger relative (nephew or cousin) of Col. Nathaniel Pope. He was brought over from England by Thomas Pope and John Washington as a minor. He was transported by Thomas Pope of Bristol, England and of Westmoreland,Virginia, son of Colonel Nathaniel Pope and by John Washington of Westmoreland,Virginia, to Virginia in 1661 when he was about 12 years old.

In 1669 Thomas Pope, son of Colonel Nathaniel Pope, deeded 150 acres of land to Humphrey Pope, adjacent to his land in Westmoreland, Virginia.

Deed from Thomas Pope of Westmoreland, to Humphrey Pope, conveying part of a dividend of land, 2,254 acres, upon which the said Thomas Pope was then seated. Dated Feb 2d, 1669. John Ashton and John Lord witnesses.

These are the only two records found that connect Humphrey Pope with Nathaniel's family but they almost certainly indicate family connection of some sort.

    Also.... from my cousin....
Some years back I explored the connection between Col. Humphrey Pope and Col. Nathaniel using Pope wills from Bristol, England and here are my notes with a few additions of what I found:

I think that our best chance of connecting the two will be found in "Old" England. I have every reason to believe that Col. Humphrey Pope and Col. Nathaniel Pope belonged to the Bristol, Gloucestershire family who had members involved in the Whitsun Court Sugar House and had members that were merchants in the importation of sugar from the West Indies and tobacco from the colonies.

According to Wm. & Mary College Quarterly, Vol. 1, No. 4, April 1893, page 177, we have: "Power of Attorney from Thomas Pope of Bristol, England, merchant, to Wm. Hardidge, merchant, dated June 19th 1677, and recorded in Westmoreland."

William Hardidge was no other than Colonel Nathaniel Pope's son-in-law mentioned in his will dated May 16, 1659, probated April 20, 1660, found on page 188 of same article. Here we have a solid connection of Nathaniel Pope's son-in-law to the Bristol family and by inference also Nathaniel Pope. In addition we have "Power of Attorney, 1709, from Joanna Pope, Bristol, England, widow, to her son Nathaniel Pope of Pope's Creek." found on page 188, another clue showing a Bristol connection. Joanna Pope, I believe, was the wife of Thomas Pope who transported and sold land to Col. Humphrey Pope.

I now have the will of John Pope, Merchant of Bristol, dated 1658, probated April 15, 1668. He mentions his daughters Abigail and Sarah Pope, sons Richard Pope, Michael Pope, and John Pope. According to a posting by a Charles Johnson to the Bristol Rootsweb list, this John Pope had two other children and this John Pope made a trip to Virginia in 1653 to make a contract with John Washington, the same person who transported Col. Humphrey Pope. And now here's the interesting part, he also mentions that John Pope's son Michael had a son named Humphrey.

I also have the will of Thomas Pope, Merchant of Bristol, probated August 8, 1681, who may very well be the one who gave power of attorney to William Hardidge, Nathaniel's son-in-law. He mentions his brothers Richard Pope and James Pope. He mentions his children ??? Pope, Thomas Pope, Richard Pope, Suzanna Pope, and Anne Pope.

This was sent to me by my cousin who has researched the Pope's both in Virginia and in England.

Humphrey Pope appears as surety on a bond of John Quisenberry
in Rappahannock (now Richmond) county, dated May
12, 1656. He obtained deed from Thomas Pope for 150 acres
near the Clifts in Westmoreland county, February 2, 1659.
He married Elizabeth, daughter and heir-at-law of Richard
Hawkins, as shown by the Westmoreland records. He died
about 1695, leaving a will which, however, is not to be found,
the book containing it having been lost. His children, were,
    1 Lawrence, 2 Humphrey, 3 John, 4 a daughter who married (a)
William Payne, of Ye'ocomico, and (b) Daniel McCarty; 5 Jemima, who married Nicholas Minor, and had four sons and a
daughter, viz., William Stewart, John, Stewart, Nicholas and
Elizabeth Wherret. Lawrence, eldest son of Humphrey and Elizabeth Pope, married Jemima , relict of John Spence, and daughter of Thomas Waddy, of Northumberland. He lived in Washington Parish, in Westmoreland, and died there. His will was recorded
March 2, 1723. His wife was made his executrix, and his estate was large. His children were, 1 Humphrey, 2 Thomas, 3 John, 4 Jemima, 5 Anne, 6 Mary, 7 Penelope, 8 Catherine.
Humphrey, second son of Humphrey and Elizabeth Pope,
names his mother in a deed to Spencer for land in 1719; makes deed to his brother John in 1704 jointly with his wife "Amey."

His will is dated January 10, 1733; probated October 29, 1731.
This will names wife "Mary," apparently implying a second
marriage. He married, first, Amey, "eldest daughter of Morris Yeale." His children were 1 Anne, who married Conditt; 2 Sophia, married Muse; 3 Humphrey, 4 John,
5 Sarah, 6 Mary, married William Muse.
John Pope, third son of Humphrey and Elizabeth (Hawkins),
died in 1722 without a will. His widow Elizabeth married, secondly,Christopher Mothershead. An inventory of his estate
    was rendered in 1722.

Humphrey Pope, son of Lawrence and Jemima, married Anne, who signed deed with him to Samuel Damonville, June 29, 1736. His estate was divided 1744. His children were, 1 Sarah (chose William Muse as guardian), 2 Humphrey (chose Thomas Clayter as guardian), 3 Mary (chose Nicholas Minor as
guardian), 4 John (chose William Muse as guardian).
Thomas Pope, son of Lawrence and Jemima, died in Westmoreland in 1741. (Will dated February 23, 1741; probated March 8, 1741.) HIe married Mary, one of the four daughters of Samuel Heath, of Northumberland, and had issue one daughter, Elizabeth. His relict, Mary (Heath) Pope, married, second, William Tebbs, of Prince William county.
John Pope, son of Lawrence and Jemima, gave deed October
27, 1738, to Thomas Shaw for land devised to him by his "father Lawrence Pope." He married cousin Sarah, daughter of Christopher Mothershead, who names her in his will of June 1 1, 1745. His children were, 1 John., 2 Lawrence, 3 Anne
("Nancy"), who married Tiffey, and had sons Pope,
    John and William.

Humphrey Pope, son of Humphrey and Anne (Veale) Pope,
lived in Washington Parish. His will was dated August 9, 1759; probated May 27, 1760. He appointed his "loving wife Sarah whole and sole executrix." She was daughter-in-law to Daniel Higdon, and it seems probable, daughter of Nathaniel Pope, whose relict, Margaret, married the said Higdon. This Nathaniel Pope, of whom records are sadly lacking, was most
likely a son of Nathaniel and Jane (Brown) Pope, whose name
has not hitherto appeared in the list of their children. ("An inventory of the sundry goods and chattels paid to Margare!t Higdon, the relict of Nathaniel Pope, deceased, by the executors of Daniel Higdon, deceased, pursuant to an order of court, bearing date 28th November, 1739, in lieu of ?32, 16, 4, dupe from the said Higdon's estate to the child of the said Nathaniel Pope, deceased."-Extract fronm Westmoreland Records.) His children were, 1 John (granted administration on his father's estate in 1760, his mother having declined to act as executrix), 2 Humphrey, 3 Benjamin, 4 Mary, 5 Nathaniel.

John Pope, son of John and Sarah Mothershead, lived in
Washington Parish; will probated November 19, 1785; William
Wroe guardian of his three sons, William, John and Thomas.
His wife was a daughter of Humphrey Quisenberry, who names
in his will (January 30, 1733) "my son-in-law John Pope."
His children were, 1 Elliot, 2 William, 3 Ransdall, 4 John,
5 Thomas. Who can furnish any information as to these sons?
Lawrence, son of John and Sarah Mothershead ( ?) Pope, was
born 1740; died July 31, 1810; will probated in. Westmoreland August 27, 1810. He married, first, Jane, daughter of Humphrey Quisenberry. Query: Was she at the time of this marriage a young widow Payne?) By this union he had 1 Austin, 2 Fanny, who married December 3, 1790, Rev. William Edwards. Lawrence Pope married, secondly, Frances Carter, and had 3 Jane Carter (born September 25, 1791.) His third wife was

Mrs. Penelope Vigar, relict of Jacob Vigar, and daughter of
Nicholas Quisenberry, by whom he had 4 Sukey, 5 Caty, 6 Lawrence Berry, 7 Elliot, 8 Johnl; went to New York in 1834, and was never heard from afterwards; 9 Sarah.
