Notes:

There have been many variations of his middle name,Brookway, Blockman, several other spellings. In reserching various Shermans/Stebbins for Richard's family, there was a collateral family named Brockway. I'm betting this was the source of his name. There was also a Lothrop family marrying into the Brockway family - in fact, there was a Lathrop Brockway. This is same Lothrop/Lathrop family of Jane Lothrop who married Samuel Fuller whose daughter married Nicholas Bonham, who we believe is our Catharine Bonham Madden's ancestor. It may turn out we're doubly related to Samuel Fuller if we could find Richard Sherman's exact connection.


Civil War - Lothrop enlisted August 7, 1863 in Captain Thomas A. Wooten's Company B, Texas State Troops Cavalry. He was 38 years old at the time he entered the company as a private.

August 1855. Mary was born 18 October 1835 in Tennessee and died 30 September 1889 in Chambers County, Texas. She is buried in the Eminence Cemetery. She was the daughter of John and Susan (Shelton) Kirk, and the widow of (?) Fairas, possibly P. J. Fairas who died 29 July 1851. Lothrop and Mary's daughter Amanda Petronella Sherman was born 15 October 1863 in Chambers County and died 14 December 1918 in Beaumont. She married Andrew Prather Jones on 16 November 1882 in Chambers County. He died on 9 June 1929 in Beaumont. Both are buried in the Magnolia Cemetery in Beaumont. Andrew was the son of Mabra Madden and Sarah (Lovelady) Jones.

"Jacob Haven Sherman Sr.'s seventh child was Lothrop Blookway Sherman. Lothrop arrived in present day Chambers County in 1854 and married Mary in 1855. Since she was a widow, she had separate funds. On 28 October 1856, Mary paid $30 for the purchase of 1/4 of a league of the Shadrack Burney survey from Tabitha Jane Shelton Jones. This became their home place. By 1860, Lothrop had cleared and improved 131 acres, with 93 acres left to clear. That year it was reported he owned one horse, one mule, one milk cow, eight working oxen, twenty cows, five sheep and twenty head of swine. He harvested one hundred and fifty bushel of Indian corn, eleven bales of cotton, fifty pounds of wool, three hundred bushels of sweet potatoes, and three hundred gallons of wine. After farming their homestead for seven years, Lothrop heard the patriotic call of the Civil War at the age of 38. He left Mary, who was seven months pregnant (with Amanda) and their three small children, and enlisted on 7 August 1863 in Captain Thomas A. Wooten's Company B, Texas State Troops Cavalry. He entered the company as a private. Lothrop returned safely home from the war to once again farm his land and to live another twenty-five years with his loving supportive wife."

Name:
Name: Lothrop -- apparently named for the Lothrop family who married into the Fuller family -- i.e. Mayflower descendants.

Brockway -- seen many spellings of this name - Blockway, Brookway, Blookway -- and others. Blockway is a family name that married into the Stebbins line beginning back 4 generations from Rebecca, a Bridget Blockway. Quite reasonably the source of the name.

War Record of A.C. Shelton.

Your father and my grandfather both fought for the Republic of Texas and through the Mexican War. Was in the battle of San Jacinto and a great many others both the Mexicans and Indians and when Mexico wanted to take back a part of the tery form the Rio Grande to Geudelupe. General Zaichery Taylor got a regiment and fought them clear back into Mexico. But he told his men when they were ready to cross the Rio Grande all that had families could go back, so grandfather returned. But your father went right on and fought in the battle of Monterey and wanted to go straight on, but the Government took part of General Taylors men and sent them around by boat to General Scott. So General Taylor and his men turned north, conquered New Mexico and lower California and on their return buried the bones of some of the American soldiers who had been way laid and killed. Then there was a lull in fighting until the war between the States.

When the Federals slipped in and took Galveston everything was aroused. A.C. Shelton was on the job and was made a leiutenant under Capt. Richard Dowling. General Magruda in Charge. They recaptured Galveston and had to hold if for months he Federals went around and thought they would come in through Sabine Pass. A.C. Shelton was sent to hold the Pass with 40 men, and they sank and captured their boats as fast as they entered and the Federals gave that up. That was considered the most brilliant defeat of any battle of the army and Jefferson Davis awarded the company a gold in honor of the occasion. Then A.C. Shelton was in the battle of Pleasant Hill and Mansfield La.
Now I hope this will be as much consolation to you as it has been a pleasure to me to write it. You and your daughters can all go in the Daughters of the Republic, also the U.D.C. if you are not already members. I am a member of both. Wn on your Father's record in U.D.C. and my Grandfather's D.R.T. so come on.

Annie, Payne, Shelton settled in Murry Co, Tenn. Shelton is Scotch. Payne is Irish and Wilson is Welch. I presume that is the Great Grand parents. Grandfather Shelton settled in Tenn. Had born to them 8 children in all they were all d in that state. Two of the daughters married and remained there. Aunt Kiziah and Aunt Polly. My Grandmother Susan came to Texas with the family also Uncle Washington. Father of Tom, Amos, George, and others. Uncle Amos your father. Aunt Maria Carraway, Aunt Tibitha Jones mother of Barton, Lura, Annie, and Irene. Aunt Marha who married a Wallis reared 3 sons. Dan, Frank, and Robert. Then a Mr. Hartwell reared 2 sons and one daugher. Will, Albert, Roxie.
The Sheltons first settled in San Augustine lived there about 3 years moved to Nacogdoches. Was there at the time of the Battle of San Jacinto, remained there 3 or 4 years and moved to Chambers Co. All but my Grandmother first married a Kirk. He was killed at the Battle of San Jacinto. She was left with 2 babies one just an infant, died at 2 or 3 months of age. Kirk was Aunt Mary Sherman's father.
Aunt Maria Carraway and her husband settled at Neches. Reared 2 sons and one daughter. Jeff is the only name I know. He died and she married a Mr. Nelson, they reared 8 boys and 2 girls but I don't know but 2 names among them. Dwight n Houston two years ago. Cousin Robert Willis told the other name. Clinton a Doctor. That was in 1910. Cousin Robert told me if I could get in touch with you I could add something to what he told me, and also referred me to Uncle Washing's older daughter Mrs. C.F. Jones who he said lived near Stephensville, Earth Co. But he could not give her rural no. so I never did write to her. He said she was older than he so I don't suppose there is any use trying now. I have Cousin Roberts old letter here by me copying what I can from it. And I did the same for him. He has forgotten all he wrote to me. He also referred me to Irene Fulks, but she is another one I never did get in touch with as well as your own dear self. So now dear, I hope you get something out of this anyway. Now I am going to take a clear sheet of paper and write your Father's war record on a clean page.

Sherry, I sent some things to your personal e-mail. I did not know Susanna had a child with William Kirk, so I would love to have the descendants of this marriage. I do not know who the Sherman family is. Can you explain their connection? There may be children in the second marriage of Susanna and John James Farrir, but I do not have that either. I have mostly concentrated on Martha Wilson Shelton, my direct ancestor, but I am interested in anything I can get on her siblings also.

Shadrack Burney was born about 1789 in North Carolina and is usually referred to as one of the earliest settlers of this area. A Shadrack Bur-ney appears in 1792 as the grandson of a Simon Burney, whose will was probated in Greene County, Georgia Most sources give his date of arrival as 1823. When the family of E. H. R. and Sarah (Barrow) Wallis settled at Wallis Hill in the winter of 1824-1825, they found only two bachelors living in that section. Family tradition holds that one of the two was Burney. The other was a Mr. Arnold, although no records have ever provided any more information about him. The 1826 census of the Atascosito District lists him as a farmer and stockraiser and also indicates he had previously resided in Louisiana before coming to Texas. His survey, located on the north side of Turtle Bay (Lake Anahuac) was bordered on the west by the E.H.R. Wallis Survey and on the north and east by the M. A. Carroll Survey. His title was dated April 24, 1831. His name does not appear in any local records after that date. One record refers to Burney as a former associate of the pirate/privateer Jean Laffite. The only landmark that links this early settler to the land is Burney Gully.

1810 Census - Orford, Grafton Co, New Hampshire.

1810. The chief event this year was "Cold Friday," which occurred Jan. 19. The early part of the preceding day the weather was mild, but later a cold wind sprang up and the thermometer began to drop. The next morning the wind blew a gale and the thermometer had fallen fifty degrees. At Sanbornton the record was made of twenty-five degrees below zero and several lives were lost. The gale did much damage to timber, and the intense cold caused much suffering, but there were no fatalities in this town. The great wind increased the severity of the weather, piercing the heaviest clothing, and finding a ready entrance to the rude homes of the people. 1811 - Mar 14 - living in Orford, Grafton Co, NH; certified that he "embraces a belief in the Religious tenets of the denomination of Christians called Methodists and does pay for the support the gospel in that order."

1814. Monday, Dec. 6, heavy shock of earthquake, continuing forty-five seconds.

1815. Spotted fever prevailed to considerable extent this year and there were many fatalities. People stricken with this disease were frequently carried off within twenty-four hours. Among the fatal cases were four children of John Favor.

1815. The great gale of Sept. 23, which did great damage in the central portion of the state, appears to have visited New Chester and Bridgewater more lightly, though much damage was done to fruit trees and buildings.

1816. Spotted fever again raged. In January, Ephraim Quimby lost six children in five days. All were buried in two graves.

1816. The first months of this year were remarkable for the small amount of snow that fell and the warm weather that prevailed, the summer months as the coldest on record in this state. Snow fell and ice formed every month of the year. June 11, two inches of snow came.{1} So great was the damage done and suffering caused that the year was called "Poverty year." Farmers made heroic efforts to save their crops, and whole nights were spent in feeding huge bonfires near the corn to keep the frost from at least a part; but on the night of Aug. 19, there came a frost that bonfires could not drive away and all the corn in town was killed. There was not enough raised for seed the next year, and provisions of all kinds went to fabulous prices. The next March hay was worth from $25 to $30 per ton; corn, $2 per bushel, and other articles in proportion. Many had no hay at all the latter part of the winter, and could not obtain any, and many cattle died. (History of the Town of Bristol)

1817. This season the crops were plenteous and farmers prospered. The weather was propitious and no frost came till the 29th of September. Sunday morning, Oct. 5, while the people were at church, a heavy earthquake shock was felt. (History of the Town of Bristol)

1818 - aft Mar, moved to New York. The family fell onto hard times, and Jacob was put in debtor's prison in Madison Co, NY during 1818. To occupy his time in prison, he carved a beautiful wooden box, which is still in the family today. During their sojurn in NY, the family embraced the Catholic faith. 1820 Census - Sherburne, Chenango County, New York. 1st four children baptized here: Lucinda, William Smith, Rebecca, and Leverett. Sherburne, New York, is about 15 miles from Lebanon, New York, where Mary stayed until her death. Lebanon is in Madison Co.

1840 - Lee County, Ohio. Willis and Rebecca Sherman Barnes are shown to be living next door.

1850 St Louis Co, Missouri, St. Ferdinands Township, 17 September.

Died 18 November 1850.
Family still in Missouri in December 1853 when Jacob, Jr., married Magdelena Summers there. 1853 Leverett R & his wife Margaret had gone ahead of the family to Chambers Co (then Liberty Co) He received 160 acres of preempted land on Turtle Bay.
1854 Richard & Lothrop and their families arrived by ox-drawn wagons and settled on Turtle Bay.
1855 Rebecca, Jacob Jr, John, William Barnes and their families had joined the others on Turtle Bay. The Turtle Bay community was located near the town of Wallisville. Leverett sold land to his brothers and sister so they could establish themselves in their new home.

Thinking that perhaps there is a family in this location related, I've looked at several and found nothing concrete. What few relationships there are seem to be more related to the Stebbins family, with the exception of the Tillotson family. Their connection is to the three Shermans who are living in a nearby township of Concord, Grafton County - so not immediate neighbors enough to say for sure they are in the same immediate family as Jacob -- but could be.

Notes:

The following information regarding Rebecca Sherman and her family is taken from the Lorraine Barrow Silva Collection of the Wallisville Heritage Park Foundation. This particular item can be found under "Chambers County History Notebook." It follows as such:
"REBECCA SHERMAN, with her children came to Texas some time between 1850 and 1854. She and her husband, Jacob H. Sherman, were moving to Texas from Missouri when he died along the way, November 18, 1850. She was the mother of quite a large family. She stopped in another county evidently before coming to Chambers County. They moved in an ox wagon and when they reached here, they settled in the community now known as Eminence, as it was near the water and afforded transportion for buying and selling. Her family is still well represented in the county. Her sons were as follows: William S. Sherman, Leverett Sherman, Jacob Sherman, Jr., John T. Sherman, Lothrop B., and Richard H. Sherman."

In 1860 Rebecca is shown to be living with her daughter Rebecca Sherman Barnes in Chambers Co, apparently widowed, and next door to Lothrop. In the 1870 census, she is shown to be living with "Hamel" - Richard Hamilton. She is 84 years old.

"The Sheltons first settled in San Augustine lived there about 3 years moved to Nacogdoches. Was there at the time of the Battle of San Jacinto, remained there 3 or 4 years and moved to Chambers Co. All but my Grandmother first married a a John Kirk. He was killed at the Battle of San Jacinto. She was left with 2 babies one just an infant, died at 2 or 3 months of age. Kirk was Aunt Mary Sherman's father."

"He (Lothrop Blookway Sherman) married Mrs. Mary Sophronia Kirk Fairas on 9 Aug 1855. May was born 18 1835 in Tennessee and died 30 September 1889 in Chambers County, Texas. She is buried in Eminence Cemetery at Eminence, Chambers County, Texas. Mary is the daughter of John Kirk and wife Susan Shelton. Mary was married previously to [?] Fairas. (possibly P.J. Fairas who died 29 Jul 1851)."

Military:
referenced in letter as Susan Shelton married "a Kirk" who was killed at Battle of San Jacinto." Only Kirk record found as casualty of Battle of San Jacinto is a John Kirk, born in England (1815) (see attached). Any connection? a relative?

San Jacinto, Battle of, the last battle of the Texan war of independence from Mexico fought April 21, 1836 near the site of present-day Houston, Texas. After the massacre of the garrison of the Alamo by the forces of Mexican general Antonio Lóz de Santa Anna, the Texan commander in chief General Sam Houston, with a small force of about 800 men, made a surprise attack on the Mexican army near the mouth of the San Jacinto River. Shouting "Remember the Alamo!", Houston's outnumbered army defeated the Mexican force of about 1300 men in less than 20 minutes. Nearly all of Santa Anna's men were either killed or captured. Santa Anna, who was among those taken prisoner, signed a treaty that granted Texans their independence and ended the war. Within that same year, Houston became the first president of the Republic of Texas.
