    Pioneer in Muhlenberg County, KY. (source Muhlenberg County, KY,p. 256, col. 2 bottom) "The Dukes family probably made the move from North Carolina to Tennessee and Kentucky with a local caravan headed that way. Samuel was one of the first settlers to settle in the Long Creek section of Muhlenberg Co. along with the Drakes, Moores and Wells families." (per MuhlenbergCounty, Kentucky; Turner Publishing, Paducah, KY, 1996, p. 120,col. 1 center)

    On March 21, 1795, Samuel signed for his wife's share of the estate of Jacob Bass, Sr. (per "Muhlenberg County,Kentucky," p. 119, col. 1 center-bottom) "Samuel Jr. died in 1821 leaving a will in Muhlenberg Co. naming his children and dividing out the slaves. He had several and they wre to stay with Wennifred until her death. There were several court papers over the disagreements Samuel's descendents had over these slaves. Winnifred lived to be very old. Papers were found dated 1837 that stated Winifred [sic] was about 90 years old. " (per Muhlenberg County, Kentucky; Turner Publishing, Paducah, KY,1996, p. 120, col. center)

    In the name of God Amen. I Samuel Dukes of Muhlenberg County and State of Kentucky being of sound mind and perfect memory do ordain this my last will and testament. Hereby revoking all other heretofore by me maid and recommending my soul to God who gave it me and as to my worldly goods which it hath been pleas God to bless with, I give in manner following, viz:
    My desire is that all my just debts be paid, then I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Winny Dukes, three feather beds and firnature, allso all the howshold and kitchen furniture. Also the land and plantation whereon I know live during her natrel life or widowhood.

    I give and bequeath to my sun Young Dukes Two Negrow Gals, Frank and Ann. All so one Chest. And at the death of my Beloved Wife I then give and bequeath to my sun Young Dukes the land and plantation whereon I know live.

    I give and bequeath to my suns Sampson Dukes and Jacob Dukes two Negrow Gals, Buk and Sarah. I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Groves one Negro Gal, Gils. I give and bequeath to my sun Gren Dukes one negro Boy, John. I give and bequeath to my suns, John Dukes and William Dukes one
    negrow Gal, Sal. I give and bequeath to my sun Benjamin Dukes one negrow woman Rose. Allso the land that Benjamin Dukes did live on containing one hundred acres. I give and Bequeath to my daughter Pashence Williams one hundred dollars in Money. I certify that it is my desire that my beloved wife Winny Dukes shall keep all the negros her to for given away in my will during her Natrel life, then to goo to home they are devised to. I hereby Constitute and appoint my suns Sampson Dukes and Young Dukes my Joint Executors this my Last Will and Testament as herunto I have set my hand and fixed my seal this 15th day of April 1821
