Edward was the son of Edward Shepard Sr. & Katherine Becham. He married Violet Charnold on December 6, 1620 in Erwarton, Suffolk, England. To this union, 5 children were born.

He Brought his family to this country in 1637 and was an English sea captain.
He and his wife were among the first settlers of Cambridge, Mass., and there spent the remainder of their days.

Calls himself a mariner in two deeds. Harvard's steward also recorded wheat from Edward Shepard's vessel. He married a 2nd time to Mary Pond. Edward Shepard became a man of property in Cambridge, and his will is still in existence. His will is dated August 20, 1680.

    -----
    EDWARD SHEPARD OF CAMBRIDGE
    E I , EDWARD J SHEPARD , born in England, died at Cambridge, Mass. , {before 20 June} 1680 ; married first Violet Wolterton, who died at Cambridge 9 Jan 1648 /9; married second , about 1650. Marv f ) Pond, widow of
Robert Pond ol Dorchester, Mass. Edward Shepard who described himself in deeds and his will as a mariner,
settled in Cambridge by 1642. He was made a freeman of Massachusetts Bay, 10 May 1643.

The valuable list of members of Lhe Church of Cambridge 1658-1667 written by Rev. Jonathan Mitchell gives the following account: ?'Edward Shepard member in f. Com. [full Communion]. So was also his first wife Violet deceased. Their children that were in minority when He Joyned are
    "Abigail now living at Dedham.
    "Deborah now also at Dedham.
    "Sarah now dwelling at Braintree.
"The eldest of these aged 12 years the 2d., 10: the 3d., 7. yeares when their parents joyned here being all baptized in England. Mary now the wife of the foresaid Edward Shepard was dismissed hither from Ch. at Dorchester & is in f. C. with us. Her daughter Mary Pond baptized at
Dorchester was 11 years old at her mothers joyning with us."

The identity of Edward Shepard s wife Violet has occasioned much controversy. Her only son, John Shepard, married for his first wife a Hartford, Conn., girl, and removed to Hartford before the death of Gregory Wolterton of that town. Wolterton made his will 17 July 1674, dying shortly after,
and in his will remembered many relatives of his own and of his several wives. One of the first legacies is that of four acres to John Shepard, Sr., son of Edward Shepard, the said John to pay 20 shillings each to his father Edward, to his sister Deborah Fairbanks, his sister Sara Tomson, and his
sister Abigail?s children. Thus he left something to four of Edward Shepard?s five children, only omitting the eldest Shepard girl, Elizabeth; but shortly before making the will, he had given land by deed to Elizabeth (Shepard) (Strickland) Disborough for life, to go at her death to her four Strickland sons; and in the will he gave £2 to Elizabeth wife of John Andrews. Jr., whom we can identify as Elizabeth Shepard 's only daughter. Thus, he made some provision for all of Violet Shepard?s children or their representatives.
Furthermore, in 1668, Winthrop's Medical Journal mentions that he treated one of the Strickland boys [children of Elizabeth Shepard] at G[oodmanj Wolterton's house in Elartford; so the Stricklands were then visiting or
living with Wolterton. Finally, when Edward?s son John received a legacyin the will of the childless brother of John Shepard's wife, while John was still living in Cambridge (1654), he appointed his uncle Gregory '?Winterton" to collect this legacy for him in Hartford. It seems extremely probable, from the foregoing, that Edward Shepard?s wife Violet was a sister of Gregory Wolterton.

    Property:
]On 24 Feb. 1650, Edward Shepard of Cambridge, mariner, conveyed to John Blackman land in Dorchester lately belonging to Robert Pond, deceased. [Suffolk County Deeds.] John Blackman had married his stepdaughter, Mary Pond.

    Other-Begin:
On 23 Jan. 1666/7, Robert Shepard , described as servant of Edward Shepard, was accused of the paternity of the child of Rachel Smith, servant to Robert Parker, and Edward and John Shepard went on his bond.
    [Middlesex County Court Records,]
It is unlikely that a son would be described as servant [i.e., apprentice], but Robert may have been a nephew or grandnephew.

Much controversy over her last name. See Edward?s notes for the research process that proved Violet is extremely like to be the daughter of John Charnould.

Early speculation for Violet?s last name included Stanley and Wolverton. Wolverton because her children John and Elizabeth are deeded land by G.W. Wolverton. John refers to Geoffrey as ?uncle.? Stanley was another interpretation of ?uncle.? Shepard?s research did not reveal a definite connection. However, John Charnold was a tanner, as was Geoffrey Wolverton. The other men involved in the wills were all from the same area in Essex. It?s possible that Wolverton was an apprentice to Charnold, which would explain a close family connection, whether or not it lead him to marry a Charnold daughter and become a literal ?uncle.?
