508 Charles died bef.13 Jan 1735. William Carter Stubbs, Ph.D. listed Charles' death in 1726. In 1724 Charles lived in Essex Co., VA. Charles left estate to 3 granddaughters, Mary, Sarah, & Catherine Taliaferro, with reversion to daughter-in-law, Sarah Taliaferro. . In 1749 Thomas & Mary (Taliaferro) Turner and Francis and Sarah (Taliaferro) Conway conveyed the same property by deed. One of the excrs. to Charles' will was Francis Thornton, husband of Mary (Taliaferro) Thornton--the sister of John Taliaferro of "Snow Creek" and a niece of the decedent. The will of Charles Taliaferro may be found in the Grinnan Papers, Virginia Historical Society under "Carolina Co. Wills derived from Court Records."

510 Charles Taliaferro was born about 1670 and died before 13 Jun 1735. His will may be found in the Grinnan Papers, Virginia Historical Society under "Caroline Co Wills derived from Court Records". The will mentions his wife Mary and his grand-daughters Mary, Sarah and Catherine. His only child, Charles Taliaferro Jr., predeceased his father. He married his cousin, Sarah Thornton, daughter of Col. Francis Thornton and Mary Taliaferro, daughter of John the Ranger d. 1719 and Sarah Smith. Sarah Thornton Taliaferro married, second, to Thomas Slaughter. Granddaughter Mary Taliaferro (ca 1725-after 1781) married her cousin Thomas Turner Jr., a grandson of Richard Taliaferro (see following) and, second, to a Thornton. Granddaughter Sarah Taliaferro (1727-1784) married Francis Conway (1722-1761). Granddaughter Catherine left no records except the possible mention of her death in the Caroline County Court Order Books in 1776. See Nugent's "Cavaliers & Pioneers" for a record of Charles Taliaferro's land transactions.

516 Colonel Hammond played a major role in the earlier English Civil Wars, first as a military leader in Cromwell?s New Model Army, then as the gaoler of the King between November 1647 and November 1648. For denying the king the chance to escape the Isle of Wight, Robert was considered after his death in 1654 one of 20 deceased regicides whose lands were confiscated and never restored by King Charles II after the restoration. Despite this, his three girls by his second wife, Mary Hampden, were allowed to retain Willen Manor in Buckinghamshire, which remained in the family until they sold the estate in 1673 and fled the country.

Death of a Giantess.
The agent of Miss Kate Keathley (Keithley), the Missouri giantess, was telegraphed at this city Wednesday morning to the effect that Miss K. died on Saturday last, at her home, about twenty-five miles from St. Louis.
She had just returned from a trip to Omaha.
Many people all over the country will remember Miss Keathley, probably the heaviest woman ever exhibited.
She weighed 812 pounds. (sic: postcard said 675 lbs)
Her education was much better than is usually possessed by persons of her class and she was able to converse intelligently and agreeably with her visitors.

521 daughter of Rev. Charles Grymes, of 'Brandon,' then of Gloucester County, now of Middlesex County.

note: It was long ago believed that the wife of Robert Taliaferro, Sr., was "Sarah Grymes," supposedly a daughter of the Reverend Charles and Katherine Grymes. Later it was found that Mrs. Robert Taliaferro's name was Katherine, not Sarah, and thus for a time she was given as "Katherine Grymes." Finally, more thorough research established that the wife of Robert Taliaferro was Katherine Debnam, a daughter of Katherine (Unknown) Debnam Grymes by her marriage to William Debnam, and thus a step-daughter, not daughter, of the Reverend Charles Grymes. No Sarah or Katherine Grymes is documented as a child of Katherine (Unknown) Debnam and Charles Grymes. The only child proven for them was a son, John Grymes I, an account of whom appears later in this report.

Few matriarchs in Virginia history produced so notable a progeny as Katherine (Unknown) Debnam Grymes, and one cannot help wondering at the mystery of her own name and origin. It is likely that she belonged to a gentry family in England, one already well known to the families among whom her children and descendants married in Virginia. While it has been supposed that she came to Virginia with her parents, or was born in Virginia, the possibility must be considered that she may have arrived from England with a husband prior to William Debnam. Until further facts are obtained, her early life remains a matter of conjecture. (Her identity was likely recorded with her marriage in the earliest and now evidently lost records of New Poquoson Parish, Charles River/York County.)

KATHERINE (UNKNOWN), born probably by 1620, may have been born in Virginia or may have come to Virginia as a member of her parents? family, whose surname is unknown, or with a first husband, whose name is now lost. The circumstances of her presence in the colony before 1637/8 are not established. Her first known husband, William Debnam, is documented. (Variations of his family name include Dedman, Deadman, Debman, Debenham, and others; the present writer believes the name was likely Debingham and that it was contracted by English usage into "Debnam."

There are several well-documented sources for information on this Cadwallader Jones. Perhaps the most important are a series of articles which appeared in *The Virginia Genealogist* in the mid-1990s beginning with Henry G. Taliaferro's "Who Was Catherine, The Wife of Colonel Cadwallader Jones of Virginia?" (vol. 38, no. 3, July-Sept, 1994). Taliaferro makes a very persuasive case for identifying Jones' wife Catherine as Catherine DEBNAM, daughter of William and Catherine Debnam and widow of Robert Taliaferro. This is of particular interest since another daughter of William and Catherine Debnam is thought to be Mary, wife of Maj. Lawrence SMITH (a descendant of William I "the Lion" of Scotland).

Matthew Mullins b. ca 1680 is listed in "English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records" by Louis des Cognets, Jr., Title Upon Indian Leases (June 1699) with 150 acres that had been leased to Thomas Ward and then assigned to him. In "Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, 1695-1732" in Patent Book 9, page 45; Matthew Mullins received 268 acres in Pamunkey Neck, King and Queen County, Virginia, beginning at the mouth of a branch of Cannoe Branch of Nickatawance, on the Mill Road, near the head of Mullen's Branch, 25 April 1701, for the transport of 6 persons: Lydia Glover, Josias Marshall, Joseph Boston, Robert Buttris, Matthew Mullins, and Thomas Gears. King and Queen County was formed in 1691 from New Kent County. King William County was formed in 1702 from King and Queen County. In the 1704 Quit Rent Rolls of Virginia, Matthew Mullins paid quit rents on 150 acres in King William County, Virginia. In order for Matthew Mullins to be mentioned in the Indian leases and to have obtained 268 acres in 1701 for the transport of 6 people (which apparently included himself), he would have had to have been born ca 1680. Under the headright system an individual was given 50 acres for each person they transported to Virginia.

Matthew Mullins may have had the following children:
2. i.Richard Mullins b. ca 1715 Virginia md Mary (Stephens?)
3. ii.Patrick Mullins b. ca 1704 Virginia md Mary ____
4. iii.Matthew Mullins b. ca 1715 Virginia md Mary Maupin

576 He was descended from Katherine Cromwell (born c. 1482), an elder sister of Tudor statesman Thomas Cromwell (c. 1485?1540), a minister of Henry VIII, whose family acquired considerable wealth by taking over monastery property during the Reformation. Katherine was married to Morgan ap William, son of William ap Yevan of Wales. The family line continued through Richard Williams, alias Cromwell, (c. 1500?1544), Henry Williams, alias Cromwell, (c. 1524?6 January 1604),[8] then to Oliver's father Robert Cromwell (c. 1560?1617), who married Elizabeth Steward (c. 1564?1654) on the day of Oliver Cromwell's birth. Thomas thus was Oliver's great-great-great-uncle.[9]

577 He worked as a Planter, Chainer.

? Parents of Tilman, and how he came to NC is unknown. Tilman (Tilgman) Helms might have been born about 1725 in Chester Co., PA, later located by boundry change in Delaware. The Helms brothers first settled on land NE of the Great Pee Dee river, along Little River at Buffalo Creek. Deeds show Tilman living East of the Pee-Dee River as late as 1762. Tilman was a planter and a chainer, as witness his signature on several deeds as chainer. In April 1770, Tilman was granted a 300 acre plantation west of the Pee-Dee, on Jones Creek at the mouth of Rocky Fork. So I would say it was about that time that Tilman and George began to establish the community of Helmsville, which is today called Monroe. George and Tilman donated land for a church and cemetary, and helped to build the High Hill Primative Baptist Church. Tilman is said to have married Rachel Craig, but I haven't been able to prove or disprove it. (from the manuscript of Sara Myers).

596 I found out she died in Jackson County, Tennessee and was buried at the New Salem Cemetery. Go north towards Gainesboro you will come to Flynn's Lick just as you pass the little store there is a road to your right that is the New Salem Road go down that road about 4 miles are so you will go past the sign that says Jones/Huff Cemetery go about 1 more mile and on your right setting on a hill is the New Salem Cemetery. She is buried in the middle of the cemetery towards the back, next to the trees by her daughter-in-law Filena Loftis and some of her Loftis grandchildren. There are a whole bunch of Jone's buried there also, her brothers and their families. Her marker says Polley Ann Loftis mother of J. M. Loftis. A tender mother and a faithful friend. With her birth and death dates also. I took a picture of the marker on Sunday 17 October 1999 at about 9:30 am. Also pictures of quite a few other markers. It was really great to be able to find her and so many others of my family.
