703 | Marquis Calmes III, born in 1726, was likely the first family member to live on Calmes Neck, probably from about 1750 until his death in Jan. 1794. Marquis III served as a Captain of Colonial Troops under Lord Dunmore during the French and Indian War, and as a major in the Revolutionary War. His nephew, Marquis Calmes IV, was a captain in the Revolutionary War, after which he settled in Kentucky. Marquis IV also served as a general in the War of 1812. In 1790, Marquis Calmes III brought a suit against John Graves for encroaching on his land. Graves had built a house near the end of Little River Lane and claimed it was on his own property, until a 1792 survey demonstrated otherwise. | Calmes, Marquis III (I14057)

738 | On 2 Jan 1650-1 he married at Hartford, Connecticut Martha Chapman, widow of Samuel Kitcherell. According to a declared statement on 15 Sep 1659 by Nathaniel and Johana Reskue, she was born at Digswell, Herts County, England and came over with the sister of Major Hezekiah Haines. She died on 17 Dec 1662. (Hezekiah Haynes, d 1693, was the second son of John Haynes, a devout Puritan of Copford Hall in Essex who emigrated with his family to New England in 1633 to escape the Laudian persecution and subsequently became governor of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Wikipedia) John Haynes: In the early 1620s, he purchased Copford Hall, near Colchester in Essex; this estate alone was reported to produce £1,100 per year.[5] Essex was also a Puritan center, and Haynes was greatly influenced by the pastor Thomas Hooker, who was a close friend.[5] In about 1630, John Winthrop and John Humphreys, two of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, extended invitations to Hooker and Haynes to join them in the New World.[6] Apparently leaving his minor children behind, Haynes emigrated in 1633, sailing aboard the Griffin with Hooker.[6] They settled first at Newtowne (later renamed Cambridge), where Haynes was the guest of Thomas Dudley until his own house was ready.[7] (Wikipedia) Griffin was the name of a 17th-century ship known to have sailed between England and English settlements in Massachusetts. Several historical and genealogical references show the Griffin making such journeys in 1633 and 1634. The 1633 journey left at Downs, England and landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts on September 3. This 1633 journey carried religious dissidents, including Thomas Hooker,[1] John Cotton, and others totaling 200 people. The ship Griffin weighed in at 300 tons and she saw the birth of at least one child, Seaborn Cotton, during the 1633 voyage.[2] In 1634 the Griffin carried Anne Hutchinson to the Massachusetts colony. Huthcinson's oldest son had preceded her the previous year, also on the Griffin. The Puritan minister Seaborn Cotton, son of John Cotton, of the First Church in Boston. He was born at sea, August 12, 1633, on the ship Griffin which brought his parents to America | Chapman, Martha** (immigrant) (I5713)

751 | President Theodore Roosevelt is a 1st cousin 3 times removed of Robert Barnhill (1769). John Barnhill (1729), was a brother to Samuel Barnhill (1732). Each married Craig sisters, daughters of Daniel and Margaret Craig of Pennsylvania. My ancestor Samuel married Jane and John married Sarah. Samuel and family moved from Washinton County, Pennsylvania to Scott County, Kentucky in 1789/90. Robert and Sarah's first six children were born in Scott County, Kentucky. The family moved from Scott County, Kentucky to Butler County, Ohio in 1804. In March 1820, Robert moved from Butler County, Ohio to Marion County, Indiana since the territory was going to be available for purchase as a result of a treaty between the Indians and the federal government. Robert applied for ten 80 acre tracts. Sadly, he and several other settlers died of an outbreak of malaria in 1821 just as the city of Indianapolis was being established. Since there was no cemetery, they were buried in a plot near where they had settled. The small cemetery was referred to as the "plague cemetery", and later as the Patterson Cemetery. Unfortunately, the cemetery was destroyed in 1922 to make room for a new medical science building on the campus of the IUPUI medical center in Indianapolis. Robert received his ten 80 acre tracts shortly after he died. I have a copy of the original patent signed by President Jackson. Family genealogist and author A. Virgil Barnhill claims this Robert (supposedly born in 1759) married Jane Auten in North Carolina. My research does not support this. I have no evidence of this family or any member of it ever having been in North Carolina. Primary source of information is John Beelar's journal published in 1917, and Opal Baker's book, "The Barnhill Family" co-authored by Sally Jane Moore. My research supports the following: "Samuel (of Washington County, Pennsylvania) moved to Scott County, Kentucky about 1790 with two brothers, Robert and Daniel" - based on historical documents regarding the early settlers of Scott County found in the Kentucky Historical Society's library at Frankfort. The Samuel referred to here is Samuel M. Barnhill (b 29 Dec 1761). In the biography of Thomas Bennett, an early pioneer of Butler County, we get an insight to the nature and generosioy of our ansestor, Robert Barnhill. Bennett "took a lease for 5 years of Levi Hawkins, on which he commenced work about the first of Mar 1816, and cleared nearly 5 acres that spring to put in corn. Adjoining the lease lived Robert Barnhill, who was a great help to Mr Bennett, by loaning him 30 bushels of corn, and when Mr Bennet had his clearing done he sent a hand and team to help plow the ground and plant the corn. Mr Barnhill afterward moved to Indianapolis and Mr Bennett thought he was the first white person that died in that city, Probably in 1817." http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=barnhill1&id=I121 | Barnhill, Robert (I63684)

Earley in settlement of Western country John Beatty acquired a tract in present Washington County on Middle Fork of Holston, of which he sold to Francis Beatty 200 acres (John and Francis were brothers). 770 | Sep. 30, 1779 Cocke County Tennessee, USA Death: Sep. 24, 1840 Knox County Tennessee, USA Mary Gilliland was the daughter of John Gilliland, DAR Ancestor Number 044937, and Elizabeth Young and the granddaughter of Robert Young, DAR Ancestor Number 130210, and Mary Douglass. Both her father and her grandfather fought in the Battle of King's Mountain as did her husband, Colonel Samuel Wear. Her grandfather was credited with having fired the volley that killed Patrick Ferguson in that battle. Robert Young's rifle "Sweet Lips" hangs in the State Museum in Nashville, TN. Lyman Draper, in his history of the King's Mountain heroes, says, "One of Col. Sevier's men, named Gililland, who had received several wounds, and was well nigh exhausted, seeing the advance of Ferguson and his part, attempted to arrest the career of the great leader, but his gun snapped, when he called out to Robert Young, of the same regiment: 'There's Ferguson! Shoot him.' 'I will try and see what Sweet Lips can do,' muttered Young, as he drew a sharp sight, discharging his rife, when Ferguson fell from his horse, and his associates were either killed or driven back. Several bullets had taken effect on Ferguson apparently at the same time, and a number claimed the honor of shooting Ferguson." 781 | Some say George immigrated with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630 but there are no records confirming. We received the following after Tom Yarington's request to the Keyser Society for more information: Friday, December 12, 2003 "Gentlemen; Mr. Yarrington has asked me about the arrival of George Keyser (correct spelling, as attested to by a sample of his signature which has survived) in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. My information indicates that George arrived there sometime before 1638 when he appears in the official records of the colony in connection with a court case. I too have a copy of Banks' book and, indeed, it does NOT make any mention of a George Keyser or anyone with a similar sounding name. Nor, to the best of my knowledge, does any other known source on this period. That George Keyser should arrive without any record of his transit or arrival is, I understand, not all that unusual as the known records for those times are far from complete. In addition, it is alleged that some persons emigrated under assumed names for various reasons, not all of which are nefarious. I do not know the origin of the assertion that George Keyser was on the Winthrop fleet, but Leon Keyser in his Keyser Families of New England does make this assertion. He cites Banks' book as his source but, as I have said, this is groundless. At least until new arises, we cannot know for sure that George Keyser was NOT on the Winthrop fleet but we certainly do not know that he was. In any event, we do know that he did emigrate and we do know, at least beyond a reasonable doubt, that he came from Leighton Buzzard, England. His father, George Keyser Sr., lived and died in that hamlet, but it is reasonably certain that he was not born there. The Keyser name seems to have come "originally" from southern Germany. The name and its homonyms well known in Germany to this day and many other members of this clan emigrated to North America over the centuries. It is not even certain that George Keyser Jr. was the first "Keyser" in North America as I have seen references to another Keyser in the immigration records for Virginia for the 1620s. I hope that this information is of some use to you. Best wishes to you both. Geoff B. Geoffrey R.
