Subject: Re: John Kennedy & Nancy Renfro family
S ue, Here are the children's names of Nancy and John: Andrew b. 1806;
Samuel, b. 1807; George W.; Benjamin L.; H. Lawrence; Rueben S.; William;
Martha; Luc inda; Amanda, Zurilda; and Eliza. Many of them I have not
found on Census rec ords yet. I know that both Andrew and Samuel were born
in Kentucky. They are probably the only 2 with the rest born in
Tennessee, prob. Maury County where the family settled in 1807. I am
still trying to find all of these. Several of them left here and went to
Texas. Samuel went back North to Garrard County , Kentucky where John's
family was. Many of the Renfro's were there too and s ome of them even
married into the same Kennedy family.
Both Benjamin and Law rence ran into trouble with the law here in Maury
County. Lawrence for unlawf ul gaming and Benjamin was a horse thief.
John had been married before Nancy t o Barbara Gordon. The seven children
from that marriage have been lots easier to keep up with and find.
Barbara died somewhere about 1805.
John died in 1 851, estate settled in 1854. Nancy died in 1858. Both are
buried in the Jacks on College Cemetery, near Columbia, Maury County,
Tennessee.
You have in you r tree at Ancestry that Nancy and John were married in
Union County, South Ca rolina. Do you know where that came from? Have you
seen a marriage record for them? When I was researching at the local
Family History Center here recentl y they listed that John and Nancy
married in Franklin County, Virginia? I hav e seen others like you list it
as Union County, SC. I have never seen a recor d and just wondering which
is right.
I have seen the William Renfro will at Maury County Courthouse. I am
going to try and get a copy soon. The Renfro Ce metery where he and his
second wife are buried is here too. It is grown up re ally bad. A man saw
it in 1986 and commented that he didn't think it would la st too many more
years as it was very bad looking then. I just recently saw t hat in a
book. I am going to try to go this fall and see if I can get to it. They
tell me you have to climb up a really steep hill to get to it and as far
as they know that is the only way in now.
In the children of John Kennedy a nd Barbara Gordon there is a grandson
Leonidas A. Ramsey who marries a Sarah Jane Renfro December 20, 1868 in
Maury County, Tennessee. I am sure she ties to the William Renfro family
but now sure how. I know that William Jr. (?) I think had a daughter
Sarah Jane -- could this be her?
Hope this helps you? W ould love to know more about the Renfro's as well.
I have just been working o n the Renfro line for a few months and just
really getting started.
How do y ou relate to the Renfro family?
Take care,
Rick
