Mrs. Sarah Piggott Dies at Age 84
Mrs. Sarah Jane Piggott, 84, widow of Charles N. Piggott, died shortly before midnight T hursday, in St. Anthony's Infirmary, where she had been a patient since the latter part of Ma rch.
Born at Athens County, Ohio, she moved to Jersey County in 1863, and located with her pa rents on a farm, near Elsah. At the age of 22 she was married to Charles N. Piggott.
The greater part of her life had been spent in the Elsah community, where Mr. Piggott fa rmed, until he followed the carpenter trade. When he retired from active work he moved wit h his wife to Piasa Chautauqua, where he was a gatekeeper.
Following his death in 1933, Mrs. Piggott moved to Alton. Last November, when her healt h began to fail she left her home at 1931 Woodland and mvoed to the home of her nephew, Willi s Rister, 508 William, where she resided until she sud a paralytic stroke and hsoptial c are became necessary. She partially recovered from the stroke and had returned to her own ho me in March when she suffered a relapse and re-entered the hospital.
Early in life she had affliated with the Presbyterian Church and had been active in chur ch work until advanced years prevented her getting about. After coming to Alton she becam e a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Funeral rites will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home by the Rev. E.J . Vance, pastor of First Pres. Church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The body is at t he funeral home, where friends may call after 2 p.m. Satu
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Mary Josephine Rister of Elsah, and nieces and nephews.
