Fieldon Infant Dies As Mother Is Operated On
While Mrs. Mabel Mathews Shumake, 32, wife of Melvln Shumake of near Fieldon, was undergoing
treatment at St. Joseph's Hospital following an operation, her infant daughter, Mary Jane Shu make,
died unexpectedly at the home of an aunt, Mrs. Mildred Worsham, Rosedale township, where it w as
being cared for :while the mother was in the hospital.
The baby died 'Thursday at 3 a. m., before a physician could be summoned. At an inquest condu cted
Thursday afternoon by Coroner H. H. Seely at the Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville, a verdic t of death, probably due to pneumonia, was returned.
At the inquest Mrs. Worsham testified that Mary Jane had been suffering with a "croupy cold"
since last Thursday, but that on Wednesday her condition seemed improved. It was not though t the child was seriously ill until 1 a. m, Thursday. The location of the Worsham home and we ather conditions prevented a physician from being obtained before the baby died.
Because of the serious condition of Mrs. Shumake, she was not told of the death of the baby u ntil yesterday. She will be unable to leave the hospital to attend the funeral, hospital atte ndants said,
and may have to remain there for further surgical treatment.
Funeral services for the baby will be held Sunday at 10 a. m. at the Pentecostal Church in Ha rdln.
Burial will be in Hardin cemetery.

Infant Dies
JERSEYVILLE. - Mary Jane Shumake, Infant daughter of Melvln and Mabel Mathews Shumake, of Jer seyville, died at 3 o'clock Thursday morning, April 7, of pneumonia.
The baby's mother is a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital in Alton and the child was being care d for at the home of her aunt, Mrs Mildred Worsham in Rosedale
An Inquest was conducted at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jeneyville Thursday afternoon by Coron er
H. H. Seely.
The baby's aunt, Mrs. Worsham, testified that Mary Jane had been suffering with a "croupy col d" since last Thursday, but that on Wednesday her condition, seemed improved. It was not'thou ght that the child was seriously ill until about 1 o'clock Thursday morning.
The location of the Worsham home and weather conditions prevented a physician from being obta ined before the baby died at 3 o'clock.
Funeral services will be held Sunday morning, April 10, at ten o'clock at the Pentecostal Chu rch in Hardin. Interment will be in the Hardin cemetery.
