- Capt. Valentine Whitman, Jun., lived in that part of the town afterward called Smithfield, and the first meeting for the organization of the new town was held in his house, March 17, 1730.
There was another Valentine Wightman or Whitman born in NOrth Kingstown, 1681, who organized the first Baptist Church at Groton, Conn., and also in New York city. The similarity of the names leads to the belief that they were of the same family and descendants of Edward Wightman, who was burned for heresy at Litchfield, England, in 1612.
