John had no children by his second wife. John had eight children by his third wife, but by 1900, only 6 were alive. Two of the children died in a house fire near Mt. Olive Church, after their father passed away.
Apparently, John, lived in WV until about 1848-49. His daughter, Margaret, has been listed as being born in WV and KY.
Speculation: If John and family were in KY in 1849-50 then he could have immigrated northwest with William Greathouse, who removed from KY in 1849-50 to Ralls Co., Mo.
John was living in Farmington Twp. of Van Buren Co., Iowa in 1850, just across the Des Moines rivers from St. Francisville, Clark Co., Mo., where the rest of John's family was residing at that time. By 1855 he had moved into Mo., near Merceyvill, in Macon Co., where the twins, Melissa and Thomas were born. The first records in Macon Co., are in August of 1857 when John bought land from Samuel and Mary E. Nixon near Gifford, Mo. When John entered the Civil War, his minor children went to live in the home of Abel and Hannah Scofield. They remained in that home until 1867 when Abel, assuming that John Greathouse was dead, petitioned the Adair Co., Mo. court to sell the property of John W. Greathouse to support his children. John reappeared at this time. He had been living in the area with the family of Christopher Shuttland and had married Elizabeth Nelson during this time. It is believed that John died in a house on his son's, John, Jr., property near Mt. Olive Church SW of the town of Macon, in Bevier Twp. of Macon Co., Mo. It should be noted that the children, are listed as being born WV, though it had been a part of VA at that time, the records are currently located in WV.
Lulu was born after the date of death we have established for John W. and apparently was not the biological child of John Greathouse.
