A case before the Chancery Court of Maryland, filed on July 24, 1798, by Zereal Penn and Burford Cotterel, showed that in 1764 John Warren and William Penn, both of Charles County, since deceased, became the sureties for Robert Yates, the administrator of Jonathan Yates, to the value of £1,200. Robert Yates died without settling the estate of Jonathan Yates, and the said Robert Yates left an only daughter Anne, unmarried, aged 40, deaf, dumb, and non compos mentis.
