Their deed is recorded in Deed Book l, page 165, Shenandoah County Courthouse, Woodstock, VA.
The Shenandoah County census of 1785, taken by Abraham Keller, listed John Mathews with a household of six, so they must have had four children before 1785. Listed as Mathewses, John, White Souls 6, Dwellings 2, Other Buildings 1.
John Mathews moved his family to Jefferson County, TN (used to be Greene County, NC).
According to a sketch of the Mathes family written in 1909 by Dr. A.S.N. Dobson said John Mathes was a member of the Session of Salem Presbyterian Church in 1828, in TN.
Was of Green Co., NC, 1792. (Deed Book 1, pg. 165 Shenandoah Co., VA), which later became Jefferson Co., TN, where he is buried.
