- Basically the story is that Sam Patton and John Gunter had a conflict of some kind, either over a horse that was traded between them, or over Union v. Confederate sympathies. Sam and/or his son Tom and 2 others went to the Gunter household and Began horsewhipping Gunter. Gunter's 14 year old daughter Marina was chopping wood/kindling nearby with her younger (grandma said 7 years old) brother and heard her father's screams for help. She rushed to his aid, nearly severing the arm of the Patton involved, whether Sam or Tom, and attacked the two other men so severely that they died within days.
