Martha Jane Furby Wagar, 85, of Beaumont, TX, died Wednesday, October 12, 2011. She was born in Beaumont on July 2, 1926, to Asher Barton Furby and Margie Pattillo Furby. Martha grew up in Beaumont and attended Giles Elementary and graduated from South Park High School in 1943. She graduated from the Lamar College School of Nursing in 1971 and worked as a nurse in the community. Martha began her nursing career at Baptist Hospital then worked at St. Elizabeth for several years. Later, Martha also did private duty nursing and home health care nursing in the Beaumont and Woodville areas. She lived in Ivanhoe, near Woodville, until she returned to Beaumont to care for her mother, Margie Pattillo Furby. Later, Martha and her husband, William retired to Woodville in 1992. Martha married William Henry Wagar on January 12, 1946, after he served in the army as a paratrooper, in Europe, during WWII. They were married in First Baptist Church of Beaumont, where she served as nursery worker and Sunday school teacher for young children. Later, when Martha retired, she became a member of Hillister Baptist Church. She worked with children in Sunday school, nursery, and Vacation Bible School. Martha and William had 4 daughters, Anita Roney of Katy, Sue Barker of Humble, Virginia Barker Collicott (deceased), and Laura Moyer of Beaumont. They have 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Wagar, after 61 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Asher B. Furby, Jr. and one daughter, Virginia Wagar Barker Collicott. Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 2:00 p.m., at the Hillister Baptist Church in Hillister, Tx, with burial to follow at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Woodville. Visitation will begin Saturday at 12:30, at the church.
