Mrs Ruth Gillem, one of the most highly respected and probably the oldest woman in Putnam County, died at her home on Martin's Creek in the 18th District. She was 90 years old and the immediate cause of death was cancer of the breast.
She was the second wife and widow of Samuel G. Gillem, one of the most prominent of the early settlers of the state. She was the stepmother of Gen. Alvin C. Gillem, distinguished Tennessee Federal General of the Civil War.
She had been a devoted member of the Christinan Church for many years. She was the stepgrandmother of Luke P. Gillem of this city.
