Notes |
- American Businessman. In 1849 he relocated to California with his brother-in-law Ben Ali Haggin and built a successful law firm practice in San Francisco. With his brother-in-law and George Hearst, he also shared partnership interests in Montana's rich Anaconda copper mine, South Dakota's famous Homestake gold mine, and other western mining ventures. For about twenty years, he headed and greatly expanded the Wells Fargo and Comoany, Banking and Pony Express Service. He was also Wells Fargo Bank?s first founders president. He owned the second largest cattle and sheep holdings in California. A third of a million acres of the San Joaquin Valley belonged to the Kern County Land Company, which he owned with his brother-in-law, Haggin. He also had another notable brother-in-law in John Breckinridge, 14th United States Vice President. In 1959 ?The Tevis Cup? was named for Lloyd Tevis in his honor by his grandson Will Tevis. The trophy is awarded to the first rider to complete the 100 mile pony express course from Tahoe to Auburn. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
