Notes |
- TN tax laws specify that a man is chargeable for personal taxes as a poll from age 21-50. Every time a man appears as a poll on a TN tax list of this era, he is between these ages. You can be exempted for certain reasons (i.e., infirmity, poverty, certain special jobs which vary by state and time, but as a general rule, tax lists "age" white male ancestors.)
If a number 1 appears next to a man's name, then he is chargeable as a poll on this list. Another item this proves is actual residence in the county for this year. You can be on a tax list for owning land in a county, but not actually live there.
If a number appears after the poll number, then this is the number of acres he owns in this county.

Robert Doak has now purchased a sizeable farm.
Thomas is either newly moved to the county, or has just reached 21, making his birth no later than 1799.
John Doak is not chargeable with tax, suggesting that he has reached 55, or has migrated away but not yet sold his land, for he is not chargeable with a poll tax. A search of deed records might answer this question.

[John Doak does not appear on these tax lists again. He has aged off, died, migrated away ... or been exempted for some reason. He is neither deceased nor gone, for in 1822, he is referred to on the tax lists as "Captain John Doak." He can be exempted due to public office, or be overage, or both.]

Doak, Robt 1
[Following the land taxes, it seems that the David Doak who had the 141 ac. had a full name of "David Campbell Doak"
John Doak is not on the tax lists himself, although obviously present. Wonder how old he is to have been elected militia captain? Doesn't much sound like an office for somone barely 20 with all of the other choices around.]

Doak, David 00001/10001
1 male 20-29 (David 24) 1 female u 5 (missing daughter)
1 female 20-29 (Elizabeth 27)
adjacent is mother-in-law, widowed Elizabeth Basham, ae 50-60
NOTE: The 1850 census says that two of David Doak's children were born in Indiana in the 1830's. His Basham wife's sisters and their husbands go to Fountain Co., IN and are still there in 1850.
Since there is only one child and since David is young, he's probably been married no more than a couple of years.
CENSUS: 1840; AR; Madison Co.; Kings River Twp; p. 37
Doak, David 120001/111001001
1 male u5 (William 3) 1 female u5 (Mary 2)
2 males 5-9 (Joseph 7, 1 missing) 1 female 5-9 (Eliza Jane 5, 1 missing)
1 male 30-39 (David 34) 1 female 10-14 (missing) 1 female 30-39 (Elizabeth 37) 1 female 60-69
Wonder if this is widowed mother-in-law Elizabeth Jones Basham?
The two missing daughters could possibly have married, but the son should be deceased unless he is the young William Doak who lived in a Grimes household in 1850 just 2 households from the David Doak family. This would require that his age be off by more than several years. Doesn't seem to be a son to either Joseph or Nathaniel Doak.

Carden, Robert 121001/10001 (formerly of Campbell Co., TN - is he somehow "family"?) Richard Carden/Carder first married a Bratcher, then a Grimes back in TN.
