From "History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties", Biographical Appendix, Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1888.
James S. Evans was born in Wythe County, Va., in 1812. His grandfather Jesse Evans, was a native of Maryland and of Scotch decent. He moved from that State to Pennsylvania and later to Virginia, where he married the sister of Gen. Breckinridge. He served throughout the Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of major. Under Gen. George Clark he assisted in over running the North Western Territory. His son, Joseph, the father of James S., was a highly educated and prominent lawyer of Wythe County, which he represented several terms in the State Legislature. He was a colonel in the War of 1812. While in Virginia he married Miss Elizabeth Smith, a native of Kentucky. Her father, Rev. James Smith,
was captured by the Indians, and had to be redeemed by his sons with a boat load of merchandise. In 1815 the Evans families came to Missouri, Joseph and his wife settling at St. Charles.
These are children from the will in Missouri - no reason James couldn't also be a son - left behind in Wythe:

"On October 19, 1792, the General Assembly passed an act establishing the town as Evansham, probably pronounced Evans-ham as it was named for Jesse Evans, a prominent local citizen at the time".
Residence: Wythe County, Virginia 1790 - 1795
St. Charles, Missouri 1815 Callaway County, Missouri 1817 Gasconade County, Missouri 1841
The New River detail is very important in connecting to the family and descendants of Capt. George Carter; with the subsequent marriage of Mary Ann Carter to Jefferson Evans ..... and ...... with the first born of James Evans as Jesse, there is reasonble basis to believe the father of James was Jesse instant (even if not commonly found as such because of the will in Missouri).
Mark Evens Also from Maryland - Also on Reed Creek
To some extent, the New River Valley was a common, attractive sight. Yet, Mark and Jesse Evans just have to be somehow connected - that's Reed Creed to the north all the way to Evansham / Wytheville, not just the larger New River. Too many coincidences?
Feb 9, 1773:
Montgomery County VA Deed Book A (1773-1789) pg. 5 Evans to Ward: - Andrew Evans and Nancy his wife of Bedford Co. .... release and sell to Ward 347 acres being a part of a grant by Letter Patent dated 17 June 1753 in Fincastle Co. on Reed Creek Nathaniel Evans, Witness. Andrew, Nathaniel and later James, are proven sons of Mark Evans from Maryland via the Scoth-Irish immigration of the Shenandoah via Pennsylvanis. Their oldest brother Daniel was appointed Executor of Mark's will in (then) Augusta County.

The 1793 Wythe County VA Personal Property Tas List (Section One - that part that became Wythe)
Bean - Daniel, Henry
Calfee - William and William Jr.
Carter - George, Robert (son of George) ........... William Sr.? ..... Francis?
Crocket - James, John, Joseph, Robert, Walter
Evans - Jesse, Joseph ..... father and son per above ...... turns out Thomas was in Montgomery
Was he born in 1740, 1750 or 1759?
Best guess: the proverbial problem reading headstones where 1750 was misread as 1759.

by James Malcom Breckenridge, St. Louis MO published 1932 by author. p. 129:
"Elizabeth Breckenridge, daughter of George and Ann (Doak) Breckenridge, married Jesse Evans, Known as Maj. Jess Evans and as Jesse Evans, Sr. a man of prominence in southwest Virginia and in Wythe County, where he resided until, as a quaintly set forth in his journal, 'September 28, 1815, this day Jesse Evans moved from New River to St. Charles on the Missouri.". The move followed quickly upon the death of the mother of the family. Elizabeth Breckenridge Evans died 7 Jun 1815 in Virginia, wife of Jesse Evans, Sr."
DAR Application has Jesse Evans born 1740 Maryland, wife Elizabeth Breckenridge ??? born 6-7-1815 married 1781. Service as Captain, in Virginia Militia. See Nat # 194623 add 167, and 62781 add 564.
