- Robert served with the malitia during the Revolutionary War. Participated in the battles o f Long Island, New York, White Plains, Harlem, Morristown, Mammouth Courthouse, Trenton, and Princeton. See"Barnhill Family Records" by Floyd Raymond Barnhill, L.D.S. Archives, FHL US/CAN Film #1293982. According to Floyd Raymond Barnhill, Robert was born in Ireland. Some of the information presented here is excerpted from "Fathers of the Ridge", Vol. I by George W. Rowland, Paragould, Ark...... Some researchers erroniously credit this Robert
Barnhill for the surname "Barnwell", and saying that all of this Robert Barnhill's descendants carry the name, "Barnwell". The following may or may not apply to this particular Robert Barnhill...."It is hereby certified that
satisfactory evidence has been exhibited before me Bradley Oates Clerk of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions in and for Mecklenberg County aforesaid, in open court that Robert Barnhill who was an applicant for a pension for his services in the Revolutionary War died on the 25th day of May A.D. 1849. Leaving as heirs the following children- Elizabeth Auton and Robert Barnhill, who are the only children of Robert Barnhill known to be living." ( The fact that William had moved to Tennessee about1806 gives credibility to this statement...) "In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto subscribed my name and affix the seal of said Court at Office in Charlotte on the 27th day of October A.D . 1851.
B. Oates, Clerk of Mecklenberg
C. Court"
