Notes |
- John Barnhill was the oldest of the 8 children of Robert Barnhill and Sarah (Smith) Barnhill, who were married about 1726 in Ireland.
John immigrated from Ireland to Philadephia, Pennsylvania on September 28, 1734 along with his father, mother and younger brother Samuel Barnhill.
John Barnhill married Sarah Craig in December, 1750 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. That same year, Sarah's younger sister Jane Craig married John's younger brother Samuel Barnhill, also in Bucks County. Sarah and Jane's parents were Daniel Craig and Margaret (Bromfield) Craig.
John and Sarah had at least 4 children:
Margaret Barnhill, John Barnhill, Sarah Elizabeth Barnhill and Robert Barnhill.
Later on John and Sarah moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where John became a merchant and ran a fast stage line called the Flying Machine during the 1760's. See "The Roll Family Windmill", developed by William Henry Roll, for several excellent articles on this form of transportation in the mid-to-late 1700's. John Barnhill and his stage line are mentioned several times.
