- Rose was the 4th of 5 children of Thomas Rafael Grady & Florence Marie Noel. Born in Pampa, Gray County, Texas, but raised mostly in Amarillo, Potter County. She lived there until she met 'Smokie', who at the time lived in Sayre, Oklahoma. I'm not sure how this was accomplished, because pop didn't have a car at the time. However, the railroad went through both cities and grandpa Grady was a railroad man. At any rate they did meet and fell in love. They were married on July 8 1933 in Sayre, Beckam County, Oklahoma. They lived there for until 1934 and then left for Portalis, Roosevelt County, New Mexico, where dad worked for the J.R. Porter ranch. By 1936 they had moved on to Phoenix, Arizona. They continued to live their except for a short sojourn back to Amarillo, Texas for my sisters birth and then back to Phoenix.
Mother raised three children in Glendale, Arizona and until I was a freshman in high school was a stay at home mother. She taught all her children the value of hard work and an education. Being Irish, with some temper, her rules were followed accordingly. If she said no, then don't bother pop.
Mother was a hard working person and very determined. She worked a various times in agriculture fields and shipping sheds, picking cotton, soda fountain in a drug store, and finally a cook in the Glendale school system, where she retired. In the last position she made friends with several Mexican ladies who taught her to cook Mexican food. Boy could she cook. Her chili was outstanding!
Mother was a strong willed woman, but kind of heart to a fault. She grew up during the depression and like most of those folks knew the value of a dollar.
The love of her children and her husband was never a question. Her marriage to dad lasted 56 years and not once can I remember a cross word between, although I'm sure there were probably one or two and dad usually lost.
The one thing she demanded of her husband was a home to raise her children. That she got! She loved her extended family and particularly enjoyed times when the family would gather. Everyone always loved coming over because they new she would cook up a storm, especially Mexican food or chili. She was quite a trooper and went on hunting and fishing trips with dad.
Until her later years Rose was very active in the church and helping others. Until she contracted COPD she was constantly sewing, cooking or helping others.
To the marriage of Rose and Smokie were born:
