Notes of John L. Shrum: One of the early census reports had John Shrum listed as "Johif" Shrum. I suspect this was just a poorly written version of John.
From "The Shrum Family", a news article written April 26, 1951 by Calvin Gregory:
"John Shrum was a son of Peter, but his wife's name is not known. John was the father of Edgar Shrum, who married Nancy Brawner, the daughter of Jerry Brawner, Sr., the son of Dozier Brawner, the first of the Brawner family of whom we have any record...
"Information about this John Shrum and his descendants was about 400 pages of material. It is found in a separately printed volume titled "John Shrum 1805-1850 of Tennessee".
.
John Alexander Wakefield Shrum,
Known as "Tinker John". An excerpt from "History of the Shrum Family" by Rev. Stanley E. Shrum: "This man was noted for his mechanical mind. He was a wood craftsman. His skill enabled him to make a wooden clock, complete, which kept time. His descendants were carpenters and builders."
Sue Shrum Piland in a letter dated March 26, 1999 notes that it was said: "John was a tinker, he made rings and bracelets from coins, silver and gold scraps....". Sue Shrum Piland's letter of 19 May 1999 corrected this: "John Alexander was called 'Tinker John' because he repaired clocks and watches. But he also made rings and bracelets from coins. My Aunt Zelma said John Alexander was the son of Newton John Shrum, son of Peter, son of Nicholas, Jr., son of Nicholas, Sr., son of Jacob, etc."
From his great granddaughter, Ella Pauline Shrum, as related in a 3 April 2000 posting to the Shrum Family Genealogy Forum by Dora L. Tomes: "She said she knows John Tinker Shrum was her great-grandfather and he was called Tinker because he worked on watches. He was bent over at the back from working at that position."
Civil War Pensioners List of 1883: "Green County Tennessee, post office address 'Greenville', 206-305, STRUM, John F." The listed cause for which the pension was granted was 'g.w.s. of back' [gun shot wounds of the back]. The monthly pension was issued in April 1882 in the amount of $4.00.
The death certificate for John A. W. Shrum shows 'father', 'Peter Shrum', birthplace 'Macon County, Tennessee'. The death certificate information was provided by John's daughter, Arta Shrum Brawner, who was born in 1881, after the death of her grandparents and great grandparents. John A. W. Shrum's father [John or Newton John Shrum] died before 1850, before John A. W. was 12 years old. It is very possible that John A. W. Shrum was then raised by his grandparents, Peter and Sarah Lovelady Shrum. The entry for 'mother' on John A. W. Shrum's death certificate shows 'Martha Caroline Gaines'. Arta Shrum Brawner filled in her mother's name, the first wife of her father, John A. W. Shrum, but not his mother.
