- Another Jacob and son Abraham Snider??
Mills of Berkeley Co, Virginia
We have three more grist mills here in Back Creek Valley. R.V. Shodgrass had an active grist mill on a stream that empties into Back Creek before you come to Tomahawk Run, where another grist mill was located. A Mr. Dove ran this mill in the early 1900s.
The last mill was Snyder's mill on the south side of Tomahawk in back of Jones Spring. Jacob Snider had acquired a 140-acre tract of land granted Feb. 17, 1773. In later years, this area became known as the Swinging Bridge area because of the swinging bridge across Back Creek (now gone). Jacob Snider died in 1790. The Charles Varley 1809 map shows a grist mill there. This mill went to Abraham Snider who died in 1845. The grist mill was sold with 195-and-a-half acres to Robert Tenery for $2,642.21. At the close of the Civil War, Tenery owed money and it was sold to Peter Hess. It is listed on the 1847 map as Trenery.
