- The Family Birdsall:
4. Henry4 Birdsall (Henry3, Robert2, John1) was born in Birdsall Malten, Yorkshire, England about 1578. Henry died 17 Sep 1651 in Salem, Mass, at age 73.
He married Judith or Agness KEMPE on an estimated date of 1609. Judith was born about 1589. Judith died about 1630 at age unknown. This according to Elizabeth Harris A netizen:
"Henry, son of Henry who mde a will in 1625 in England and died in 1631, leaving things to children William, Thomas, and Mary, with no mention of Henry. However, snce the oldest son, named for his father, received his share when leaving for the new world in about 1628.
"The Birdsall family home is thought to be near Malton, East Riding, Yorkshire. The first American records of Henry are from 1632 after arriving in Boston with son Nathan and dau. Judith. He was a member of the First Church of Salem. In 1643 He removed to New Haven (CT). His will is recorded in probate records in Essex Cty. Vol. 1, p.123.
This family was one of the earliest, if not the
earliest, of the settlers in the Oblong which later
became part of Pawling. Tradition says that Nathan4
Birdsall came to Pawling in 1728 and settled there
although we question the date.
The emigrant ancestor of this family was HENRY1
BIRDSALL who arrived near Boston, a widower, in 1632. He
brought with him his son Nathan, age 21 and daughter
Judith, age 13. He was registered as a freeman in Salem
in 1638. [The best source we have found on this family
is The Birdsall Family by George A. Birdsall of
Annandale, Va. (Revised 1964)].
