Elected to represent Virginia's 8th, 12th, 13th, and 22nd Districts in the United States House of Representatives, as well as At-Large, serving from 1805 to 1813, 1815 to 1819, and 1821 to 1829. A nephew by marriage to George Washington, he also served as a Member of the Virginia State House of Delegates from 1787 to 1789, and 1819 to 1821, and as a Member of the Virginia State Senate from 1794 to 1805.
