FRIONA - William Meryle Massie, 89, of Friona died Nov. 17, 2004, in Friona. Funeral services will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at First United Methodist Church of Friona. Officiating will be Rev. Steve Patterson, pastor, and Rev. Archie Echols of Roswell, N.M., former pastor. Burial with Masonic Rites will be held in the Friona Cemetery by Blackwell Funeral Home of Friona.
Mr. Massie was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a longtime area farmer who was chosen Parmer County Farmer of the Year in 1967, and was a member of the Wheat Growers Association. He was chosen as Friona Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1995. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a former member of the Board of Stewards and Friona I.S.D. School Board.
A member of First United Methodist Church of Friona, he served as a member of the Board of Trustees. He was an avid hunter and Friona Squaws supporter.
Survivors include his wife, Olive Massie of Friona, 3 daughters, Marca Lynn Herring of Friona, Betty Merylene Towle of Bar Harbour, Maine, and Jaynette Lea Looper of Friona; a sister, Gleo Melleard of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 2 foreign exchange students, Anni Jensen of Denmark and Nergis Yazgan of Turkey; 7 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Memorials can be made to Prairie Acres Nursing Home of Friona or First United Methodist Church.
