CAPT JOHN DENT, b: 1645 in Yorkshire, England d: 1712 in St. Marys Co. Maryland. He married Mary Hatch in St.Marys.
Capt. John Dent (1645-1712) immigrated to Maryland in 1661 from Yorkshire, England. He inherited the lands of his uncle Thomas Dent, circa 1630 of Gisborough, Yorkshire, England. Under the will in Charles Co. Maryland, which was executed in 0 and proved in 1708. He owned other estates besides. John was Commissioner and Justice of the Pease, 1679, 1680, 1685 for St. Marys Co. Maryland. He served against the Indians at Susquehanna Fort, 1681 and was Appointed Captain of Chaptico Hundred 1689, Captian of the Foot in 1694. Appointed by Willian and Mary Commission from King Charles II of England and a member of the Kings Council for Maryland. John Dent was one of the earliest settelers of the Province of Maryland in Coolsprings,Charles Co. Maryland.
He was well established as a planter by Sept. 1666, when he entered his cattle marks at court in Charles Co. His early days in the Province were spent in Charles Co. near his kinsman, but he eventually resided in the nothern portion of St. Marys Co. near Charlotte Hall. As early as 1681, he was involved with Josias Fendall, former Governor of the Province, and Capt. John Coode in their attempt to overthrow the rule of Lord Baltimore. They failed at that time but were successful in 1689.
Apparently Capt. Dent discovered the healing qualities of his spring, "Cool Springs" , and word soon spread about its powers and the fight was on between the Dents, the Church and the State over the use and ownership of the spring. In Novem, 1698 The Lower House ordered that a committee be formed to purchase 50 acres for the use of Cool Springs and if the owner objected, then to exercise thr rights of eminent domain. So it went.

JOHN DENT, JR., first surviving son of Capt. John Dent and Mary Hatch, was born about 1674 in Chaptico Hundred, St. Marys Co. Maryland according to deposition made in 1727. At the time he declared himself to be 53 years.
Neither he nor his brother George Dent participated in the political life of the Province, because of their ultra-liberal views and Lord Battimore regained his Province in 1715 so the conservatives or Proprietary Party in St. Mary's Co. were able to control the social and political stage. The Dents retired ot their plantations and farmed.Upon John death his son John Dent III devided the entire estate between the four sons, namely, John Dent III, Hatch Dent, Michael Dent and Benjamin Dent. The land " Dent's Inheritance" was eventually divided up amoung the respective heirs and became the seats of this branch of the Dent family. The concentration of the family within this small area which became part of Trinity Parish at its organization fostered a number of intermarriages among couisns which was more noticeable in this branch than the decendents of Judge Thomas Dent.
