On 20 Jun 1632, Charles I of England granted to Caecilius (Cecil) Calvert, Baron of Baltimore, the charter for the Province of Maryland. Calvert (and his father, George Calvert before him) had long been recruiting "gentlemen investors" and, once certain that the King's charter would not be withdrawn (due to complaints by both Virginians and anti-Catholics on the Privy Council), he began notifying them of departure dates:

The time first intended for the embarkation was as early as September, 1633, but it was delayed for two months--perhaps for the purpose of arriving at their destination in a more favorable season of the year, at the beginning of spring rather than in the autumn or witner. In any case, on St. Cecilia's Day--November 22, 1633--the two vessels set sail, into an east wind, from Cowes in the Isle of Wight, carrying nearly 200 gentlemen adventurers and their servants--among them Dr. John Briscoe.

Among the Calvert papers in possession of the Maryland Historical Society there is a letter from the priest, Father Andrew White, to Lord Baltimore dated from Maryland, February 20, 1638, in which reference is made to fevers among the colonis and to the "advice of our chirurgian."

regarding proof of marriage of John Briscoe to Eliz. Dubois has always been accepted but for the period there are NO marriage records, of that you can be sure.
I will quote from Historian of Missouri Briscoe Ass. and other sources:
"Dr. John Briscoe, Ark and Dove, 1634-born 1612 Crofton, england, son of Leonard Briscoe, married in England Elizaeth duBois. Died in St. Mary's Co. Md 1699"
This is only place a definite date of birth ever found and well accepted. These records refer to a certain Hall of Records of Md and found accurate by all who have examined. and this is deemed accurate based on various authority. It also refer's to Hutchinson's History of Cumberland; Forester's Visitation of Cumberland and Westmoreland; Metcalf's Visitation of Northamptonshire; Nicholson & Burns' westmoreland & cumberland; John Watson's History of Halifax; Plantagenet's Harrisons of Yourkshire and Bethane's Baronetage. all of which are English records and unavailble as far as I know in this country but researched in England.
Another person inspected "The Genealogy of the Ancient and Knightly Family of Briscoe, by John Charles Brooke, Esq. and pub. England 1783. and states this book shows Leonard Briscoe had 4 sons, but that no dates are given. However he says e is in said book mention of a John Briscoe b. 1590, was not the John Briscoe 4th son of Leonard.
Also about 1698/9 there were 3 known living John Briscoes, other than Dr. John- his son John who died 1718; his grandson John who was living as late as 1718;and grandson John, son of Dr. John's son Phillip who died 1733/34. All involved with te immigrant Dr. John.. Phillip in 1719 depostion was 72 yrs old making him born in 1647 and proves Dr. John was in Md in 1648.

I have a copy of a letter in Md Gen. Soc. files once in possession of Louise Briscoe owner of "Piedmont"-old Briscoe home built in 1784 from Cecilius Baltimore to Dr. John Briscoe, inviting him to join Ark and Dove Expedition., dated Odiham, Sept 1st, 1633.
Another ref. was Mathew's Armory and Glue Book, pub in London in 1908 says ".... son of Dr. John Briscoe who came to Maryland in Ark and Dove 1634, settled in St. Mary's Co-son of Leonard, son of richard of Crofton, Cumberland Co, Engl"
There are several other references found in London.

The Story of the Ark and the Dove

By the time two small wooden sailing ships lifted anchor, on the 22nd day of November, 1633, and set sail from Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, much planning already had been done. Cecil Calvert, the organizer of the venture, was sending people to establish the English colony of Maryland on the North American coast. He did not want to repeat any of the mistakes made by earlier groups, such as the colonists at Jamestown and Plymouth, and so he made sure his travelers were well prepared.

He carefully chose people who were important to the success of the colony: farmers to grow food, carpenters and brick layers to build houses, shipbuilders, blacksmiths, even soldiers for protection. Among the colonists were two Jesuits priests. It is from the writings of Father Andrew White that we have learned so much about the voyage of the Ark and Dove, as well as the early years of settlement in Maryland.

As part of the planning, the Calverts carefully selected and stored barrels of flour, meat, dried vegetables, water, beer, sugar, salt, vinegar, and other food stuff. The colonists had to take enough food, not only for the long voyage, but to keep the settlement alive in case no other food was found when they arrived.

Clothing for everyone, for both summer and winter, was packed. Seeds, roots, and plant cuttings were stored for planting fields and gardens. Many kinds of tools were taken for home and furniture construction, farming, building fortifications, and even making small boats. The ships were armed with cannon for protection at sea from pirates. Guns, knives, and swords were brought for protection and hunting when they reached land. Even trade goods were packed for trading with Native Americans.

All of these provisions were stored on board so they took up as little space as possible and in such a way that food-related items would not spoil. Between space for supplies and living accommodations for approximately 200 men and women, the little ships were quite full.

One lesson the Calvert family had learned from earlier ventures was correct timing. The voyage left England in the fall so that the band of colonists would arrive in North America in the spring. This way they would have time to grow food before the following winter and would not need warm houses for several months.

Finally, the two ships set sail. They would not travel directly westward toward Maryland. Instead, a southwesterly course was set, with planned stops at the Canary Islands and then the Cape Verde Islands off the west coast of Africa, then west across the Atlantic Ocean to Barbados Island in the Caribbean. These would be stepping stones across the vast Atlantic, and the route should give them favorable winds. From the calmer waters of the Caribbean, the ships planned to sail northward up the coast of North America, with a stop in Virginia before proceeding to Maryland.

Not long after going to sea, the Ark and Dove were swept by a terrible storm. At midnight, the Dove signaled that it was in distress. So fierce were the wind and waves, however, that the Ark could not help. When dawn came, the Dove had disappeared.

The Ark sailed on alone. The ship reached Barbados on January 3, 1634. As the passengers and crew rested and gathered fresh water and food supplies, the Dove appeared on the horizon. The smaller vessel had turned back to the English harbor and waited out the storm before continuing on. All were united again.

On February 27, both ships arrived off of Point Comfort, Virginia and visited the colonists at Jamestown. They bought pigs, cows, and other needed supplies. Soon they set sail up the Chesapeake Bay, bound for the Potomac River and Maryland. People crowded the decks anxious to get their first glimpse of Maryland and its forests, birds, and Indians.

At a small island then called St. Clement's (today called Blakistone) they went ashore, set up a large cross, and gave thanks for their safe arrival. The date was March 25, 1634 which we celebrate today as Maryland Day.

The settlers were not yet able to set up their homes but their long four month sea voyage was ended. Their next new venture was to begin.

QUESTION: have a record from a book called Wright-Briscoe Pioneers, by John C Wright. states another generation between Philip Briscoe and John and Elizabeth Dubois, another John and wife thought to be Cuthbirth (..). However, most other researchers discredit this extra generation.

Notes:

The brothers became some of the early settlers of the Valley of Berkley, afterwards Frederick County. Builder of "Piedmont," one of the Briscoe family's estates. Piedmont is located 1 1/2 miles west of Charlestown, West Virginia, on Route . The house stands on a hillside overlooking a small stream that winds through the estate. The original house was constructed by a Robert Worthington around 1730 on property then called "Quarry Bank;" this was incorporated into the plantation house built by Dr. John Briscoe IV in 1784.

Wright-Briscoe: Although Dr. Briscoe's youngest son has been listed as "Samuel" in birth record and a few times in church notations, since the name of "Walter" has appeared more frequently, will hereafter refer to this colonial pioneer as Walr Briscoe. In 1755 a list of freeholders of the parish who voted on the matter of allowing communicates of the new church to draw lots for the pews shows the name of one Samuel Briscoe.
He later moved to Virginia, perhaps about the same time his brothers Dr. John Briscoe, IV, George and Robert became some of the early settlers of the Valley of Berkley, afterwards Frederick County. It is in this area that "Piedmont" one of e Briscoe family's estates, was established by Dr. John Briscoe, IV.
Walter was born in Virginia in 1771, however his other son Stephen and his daughters, who are mentioned in his will, were evidently born in Nelson Co, Kentucky. The exact date that Walter and Elizabeth Briscoe emigrated to Kentucky is not k; the only existing definite record is Walter Bricoe's will dated Apri 1 1783, June 28, 1785, Nelson Co, Kentucky, leaving his entire estate to his wife Eizabeth, his son Walter, and his son Stephen. If his sons should die, then instructions were left for their portions to pass to his daughters. His wife Elizabeth was appointed as his Executor; "in case she should die before she shall make a will, then I appoint Thomas Brown and Jacob Beeson as my executors."
According to a CD, he died by drowning in the Salt River.

From Sarah Browder: In 1957 Bible in possession of Keith Compton, Clayton, NC, will 1770 St. Mary's Co, MD, another family Bible in poss. of Jane Harrison Clagett; deeded land by father in 1737; on 25 May 1754 Matthew Compton, planter and wife, Rachel, conveyed to MatthewMartain (all of Charles Co) for 7123 pounds of tobacco a portion of tract known as "Gisborough", land passed down to Comptons by Margaret Dent, daughter of Thomas Dent of St. Mary's Co, who married Edmund Howard 26 may 1681, then of Somerset but later of Charles Co; they being grandparents of Rachel Howard Compton, the land lying in Charles Co being 156 acres. On same date, 25 May 1754, Matthew Compton and wife Rachel, for 1898 pounds of tobacco the amount of 50 acres from "Gillsborough", "Gisborough" being 164 acres. On 1 Dec 1757, Matthew of Charles Co, conveyed to William Compton, planter, for 6000 pounds of tobacco "Wilton" of 149 acres.

[This does seem be referring to Matthew Compton Jr, since in the will of Matthew Compton, 1770, St Mary's Co, he names, among others, his wife Rachel. He left to Barton, Alex. and Edmund H, dwelling plantation of "Wornout", son Stephen a portion of that property, estate divided equally between Matthew, John, Susannah, Barton, Alex., and Edmund H. Witnesses were Robert Slye Wood and Henry Morris and Samuel Briscoe.

Pursuant to the order of last Aug CC Court, Commission issued on Aug 16, 1740 to Saml Hanson Jr, William Eilbeck, Wm McFerson Sr, Richard Gambra of CC, Gent (not being any way related to the petitioner, contiguous proprietor, nor interested in sd land), to examine witnesses touching the bounds of a tract of land in CC called Guisborough in possession of Matthew Compton Jr.
And now here, Richard Gambra and William McFerson, return to this Court the Commission with the following certificate & the subsequent deposition -
We hereby certify that on Mar 30, 1741, we met on the premises within mentioned, and took 1 deposition relating to the bounds of the within land. Signed - Richard Gambra, Will'm McFerson.

Will dated February 1770, refers to his land called "Worncoat," which he specifically leaves to wife Rachel during her widowhood, leaving his entire estate to her "unless she marry." He provides that the land shall fall to son Stephen if he has heirs; if not, to Matthew if he has heirs; if not, to John, if he has heirs; or to Barton,, or to Alexander, or to Edmund Howard, whichever has heirs. The will shows that of his six children three are under age and neighter of the other three had children at the time of the making of the will. Matthew Compton signed his will in his own hand before witnesses: Robert Slye Wood, Henry Moris, and Saml. Briscoe. The probate was made in St. Mary's Co on the 3rd day of Sep 1770 in the presence of Rachel Compton, the widow, and the three witnesses. No son Zachariah was named in the will.

1716: John Slye to William Kingsland, Chas Co book H2 p. 49 - first John Slye deed. John leased land called Lapworth Lodge, which bounded by John Pile and Robert Slye, and a tract of Thomas Gerard, Esq. called Norwood. The land to be leased = 100 acres. This is a 15 year lease. Witnessed by Jno Chunn, Samuel Swann. The plantation has insufficient timber, so timber can be supplied from John Slye's plantation called Lapworth.

1719: John Slye sold to Peter Cartwright 23 acres of Lapworth. Ref: Charles County Rent Rolls 1642-1775. Deed Book H2 p. 318. John Slye is said to be a gentleman, and Peter Cartright is said to be a planter. The land is bounded by Northwood. Witnesses were Geo. Dent and John Chunn, Jr. Acknowledged by John Slye.

The Deposition of Henry Haislope, age 76, deposes that 70 years ago, on the east side of Birds Creek Run, stood a mill house belonging to John Perry, and afterwards was owned and possessed by Colo Robert Hanson who married John Perry's widow, and that all the lands from the head of a branch making into the fresh run of Birds Cr to the afd Perry's mill, was owned, peaceably possessed, worked, and enjoyed by John Perry, his widow, and Colo Robert Hanson as far as 'Stonestreets Gut, and that the sd Perry's land joined the lands of John Vaadry and John Slye, and the parcels of the sd lands have been entwat (?) by Perry, his widow, Colo Robert Ranson and their tenants as far back as 60 years (ago). The Deposition of Cornelius Barber, aged 67, deposes that as he walked from where an old mill house, now in the possession of Charles Mills stands to where this Deponent now stands, was the original course of Birds Creek Run, and that the space of ground from the old course of the run to where the present run is, was owned and possessed by John Perry, and that he never understood that sd land was claimed in Perry's time by any other person, and that divers parcels of Colo Robert Hanson's land, which he got by marrying with Perry's widow, were worked by Colo Robert Hanson and his tenants, and that about 60 years ago, Thomas Perry went to England and afterwards sold the land afd to Philip Key, who Negro Quarters on sd land, and cultivated his sd land in diverse places. This deponent then removed to the west side of sd run, and about 60 yards to the north of the above named place, and says there stood a waste gate, also says that the run is now in the same place as it was when the mill was standing. To my son William Dent Briscoe - all the lands I shall die possessed of, viz, Morriss' Hope, Bachelors Hope, Baltimores Gift, and Baltimore's Gift Addition,
To my son William Dent Briscoe and to my daughters, Ann Warren Briscoe, Grace Dent Briscoe, Mary Hanson Briscoe, Eleanor Buchanan Briscoe, and Judith Chase Briscoe - the whole of my personal estate, to be equally divided among them, Also, I give my son William Dent Briscoe, Negro wench Suck, as part of his portion of the personal estate. I, Stephen Compton of CC, am sick and weak of body, but of sound, disposing, mind, memory and understanding.
To my son-in-law John Maddox - for the use and benefit I have had of my sd son-in-law's estate, I give John all that tract of land called Hansons Discovery, and also all that part of a tract of land called Bargain [blank] I bought of John Brown Wilder, [and] Carpenter James, Charity & her 4 children with their future increase from the date of this, my Will. But if he does not choose to take the above legacy in lieu of any claim he may have against me, then the whole to be sold by my executors, or such part thereof as may be sufficient to satisfy such claim.

Immediately after the my death, Negro fellow James and my Negro fellow Sam, formerly the property of John Maddox Sr, are to be free. The right of these 2 Negroes to be in my friends Jonathan Yates and Thomas Harris, who, no doubt, will take proper steps to set them free immediately after my death.
To my mother Rachel Compton - 1 Negro man named Pompey and the use of 1 Negro girl named Lurana, during her life. And after my and my mother's death, Luraner is to be equally divided amongst the children of my sister, Susana Turner, with her future increase. I also give my mother 1 cow and calf and 6 sheep.

Need to confirm birth date. He was not listed in the Trinity Church records; therefore, possibly was older than Elizabeth and his birth recorded in another parish whose record is no longer extant.
His will was dated 3 Nov 1784, probated 20 Nov 1784, in Charles Co, Maryland, names his mother Rachel and mentions brothers Matthew, John, Alexander and Edmund. He does not mention Barton who presumably was deceased by that time. Also mentis William and Zachariah as brothers who were not mentioned in his father's will or the Trinity Parish Register. Stephen also named sisters Susanna, Margaret and Elizabeth. In another place he refers to "my niece Ann Compton, daughter of sister Wilder," and to "my nephew Henry T. Compton." He also speaks of "my sister Susanna Swann," and "my three children-in-law, Sarah H. Maddox, Elizabeth J. Maddox, and John Maddox" which he leaves a tract of land called Hanson's Discovery and to John Maddox part of a tract called Bargain. In another place he mentions nephew William S ( or T.) Compton (Liber WB1 folio 421).

I did a little looking in some of the old Comptonology that I have and found the following.
In will book 8 page 421, Charles Co., Md. list these children of Mathew and Rachel Compton; Zachariah, Mathew, John, Alexander, Edmund, Howard, Margaret, Elizabeth, Susann md. Turner, William, Wilder, and Stephen.
Also in another Vol. it list a Dr. Z. J Compton b. 1801, d1866 as the son of E. Howard Compton and Elizabeth Yates.

Mary Ann Compton was born in 1762. She married Notley Maddox in 1790 in Charles Co, Maryland. Notley was born in St. Mary's Co., Maryland and died November 08, 1813 in Rowan Co, North Carolina.
They moved to Cumberland Co, Va and reared 7 children there, then moved to NC on Yadkin River, 1805. Notley served in the Revolutionary War as a Matross and bombardier in Company designated as Captain Drury Ragsdale's and Captain James Penn's Co 1st Artillery Regiment Continental troops commanded by Col Charles Harrison. This Regiment was organized Nov 39 1776 and assigned to Va. He enlisted Feb 7,1776 and served 7 years. He was a private. (In 1945 Notley and Mary Ann's Bible was in the possession of Eugenia Maddox, Eatonton, Ga.) When Notley died all his children were put under the guardianship of John, when he became of age, took over guardianship of some more. Later some were transfered to sister Elizabeth and her husband, Lemuel Hilton. Mary Ann's signature on adminstrative papers show Notley owned 4 negro adults and 4 children. Mary Ann Compton died February 02, 1826 in Rowan Co, North Carolina. (Vol. 2, #3555)

Children of Mary Compton and Notley Maddox were:
1. John Compton Maddox, b: December 13, 1791 in Cumberland Co, Virginia; married (1) Elizabeth Sample June 10, 1819 in Putnam Co; and (2) Mary "Polly" Buckner July 23, 1831. Mary was born April 15, 1813; d: May 13, 1890. He was guardian for some brothers and sisters 1813 till moved to Ga. He died April 11, 1863 in Willard, Ga, and is buried at Avalon Meth. Ch Cem, Willard, Ga.

2. Elizabeth Jane Maddox, b: 1793 in Cumberland County, Virginia, d: in Davie Co, North Carolina.
She was made a ward of Jonathon Chesher, May 8,1810, date questionable. She Married Lemuel Hilton March 19, 1817 in Rowan Co, North Carolina. He was made guardian of several other brothers and sisters. Sept 1,1825 Elizabeth Hilton, widowd her 1/7 of land from her father,Notley Maddox to Benton Clemmons. It was in Rowan Co, on the SW side of the Yadkin River, 212 acres. Lemuel died in 1821 in Rowan Co.
Elizabeth married William Jones, Feb 6,1827. A list of assets is recorded for sale 1844 to settle the estate of Elizabeth Jones is presented by Lemuel Hilton, NC state Archives, Davie Co record book of Settlements 1840-1845 Vol II.

3. William Samuel Maddox, b: 1795, d: in Texas; m Mary Gilpin. In his father's papers is a paper dated 1815 where John Maddox is Adminstrator for William Maddox Deceased. It says he owned a negro woman and child worth $200, 1 girl sold for 171.00 and a boy sold for 181.00.


4. Margaret Maddox, b: 1797; m John Davis. She died young leaving 3 children.

5. Edward Compton Maddox; b: 1799 in Virginia; d: August 10, 1866; m Mary Frances Sale May 5, 1824. Mary Frances was born September 30, 1806 in Putnam Co, Georgia; d: June 18, 1872. In 1813 Edward was made the ward of George Hanes, Rowan Co, NC. Whoreports in1816 income from hiring out his negro woman and rent for a small amount of land and 1814-15 turned in a careful list for his clothing, schooling, etc, including singing school.

6. Notley Compton Maddox, b: May 31, 1801 in Cumberland Co, Virginia. As of March 10,1813, his brother John was his guardian. 1817-18-19-20 show Lemuel Hilton, his brother-in-law had been named his guardian. He married Permelia Ann Row on Jan 16, 1831. Permelia was b: September 30, 1806 in Putnam Co, Georgia and died May 01, 1900 in Whitesville, Harris Co, Georgia. Notley died Sept 09, 1877 in Harris Co, Georgia

7. Alexander Compton Maddox, b: July 19, 1803. In 1813 John was his guardian, but sometime later this was transferred to Lemiel Hilton. He married
(1) Elizabeth Howard September 18, 1827; (2) Sarah Mitchell February 02, 1837; and (3) Elizabeth M. Mitchell in 1858. Alexander died May 07, 1859 in Putnam Co, Georgia.

It's my husband who's G.G.G Grandfather was George Compton who was married to Sarah Duke. Nancy (their daughter) was married to Thomas Finnell. They are buried on their farm along with their son Charles and his son. We believe their slaves that came with them from Va are also buried on the same property. We walked the cemetery and have pictures of the stones. They are in poor shape and broken. The owner of the property didn't know they were back there.
