Rec. 5 Dec 1735. (Abstr. from Virginia Families, Vol. 2, p. 734, w/add'l data that Geo. ESKRIDGE m 1st Rebecca, dau. of Samuel and Mary PHILPOT Bonum; m (2) Elizabeth, dau. of Robert VAULX of Westmoreland; and that he was guardian of Mary BALL, mother of George WASHINGTON from age 13 to her marriage.)
    ---
COL. GEORGE1 ESKRIDGE, COL. was born 1660 in Wales, Lancashire, England, and died Bet. October 27 - November 25, 1735. He married (1) REBECCA BONUM Abt. 1680 in VA, daughter of SAMUEL BONUM and MARGARET PHILPOTT. She was born 1665 in Westmoreland Co., VA, and died October 27, 1715 in Westmoreland Co., VA. He married (2) ELIZABETH VAULX Bef. 1716, daughter of ROBERT VAULX and MARY FOXALL. She was born Abt. 1700, and died 1744.

From Heritage of Lafayette County Mississippi, "Came to the Virginia Colony. Was seated at Sandy Point, Westmoreland Co., VA. Stated to have been Member House of Burgesses 1705-1734, Member of Quorum 1714, Coroner Potomac Dist., Tobacco Agent 1714, Queen's attorney 1703-1710, King's Attorney 1719-1732, Vestryman and Warden Copel Parish 1731-1735."

From Family Tree Maker, World Family Tree Vol. I, #2687, submitted by James B. Jenkins: "Col. George Eskridge came from Lancaster, England, who in 1670 was seized in Wales by press gang and who carried him aboard a ship bound for Virginia where he was sold to a planter as an indentured servant for 8 years. When freed, he returned to England to get his law degree and then came back to northern neck of Virginia between the Potomac and Rappahannock. He settled in Westmoreland County, VA in 1696. He was an eminent lawyer, served ten years as member of the house of Burgesses and a member of Quorum and King's Attorneys. His plantation of many thousand acres (land grants show 12,644 acres) was called Sandy Point and was located on the historic Potomac River. He played an important part in the life of our first President, George Washington. His [George Washington] mother's name was Mary Ball. Her father refered to her as 'his little rose of Epping Forest' . He died when she was about 3 years old. Her mother also died a few years later and in her will she named George Eskridge as the guardian of Mary. She spent her girlhood in the Eskridge home and later married a neighbor, Augustine Washington. The marriage took place at Sandy Point. When her first child was born, the son was named for Mary's much-loved guardian. Col. George was neighbor and friend to the Washingtons, Lees, Carters, of Virginia. He was a vestryman of Yeocomico Episcopal Church (est 1655) in Virginia. He was the first Eskridge to come to America. His portrait, together with that of his wife Rebecca Bonum, hung for several years at Mount Vernon plantation but is now in the Department of Archives of the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, Va. Further refer to George Eskridge is in the Eskridge drawer in the Westmoreland County Museum, Va.--'Cleveland Co. Heritage' pages 218-222"

From Family Tree Maker, World Family Tree Vol. 6, #3663, submitted by Paula M. Radican: "George Washington was undoubtedly named for him. Douglas S. Freeman so stated in his biography of Washington. Mary Hewes the mother of Mary Ball and of Mary's older half-sister, Elizabeth Johnson who married Samuel Bonum...named Colonel Eskridge as the guardian of Mary Ball. He served in this capacity from the time Mary was 13 years old until she married Augustine Washington. Mary Ball was reared in the home of Colonel Eskridge and her marriage to the father of the "Father of our Country" took place from our ancestor's home. It was George Eskridge who held their first born as he was christened George Washington. A highway marker near Sandy Point, Westmoreland County, VA attests to this fact." quoted from the book KIN OF MY GRANDCHILDREN by Judge Noble Littell.

From Family Tree Maker, World Family Tree Vol. 17, #1968, submitted by Alan D. Sparks: "Starting in 1720, was guardian of Mary Ball, daughter of Colonel Johnson Ball and Mary Johnson Ball. Mary Ball was Augustine Washington's second wife; in 1732 they named their first son George in honor of her guardian George Eskridge." source: Jobe Journal

From Eskridge Family Genealogy Forum, submitted by Sara Washburn: "Colonel George Eskridge, a Deputy to the Virginia House of Burgesses for many years in the first half of the 18th century, was guardian to Mary Ball, the mother of George Washington. It is stated that Col. Eskridge, who died in 1735, came to America about 1670, probably from Lancashire. He married, first, Rebecca, daughter of Samuel and Margaret (Philpot) Bonum. Rebecca (Bonum)Eskridge had a brother, Samuel Bonum, whose wife was Elizabeth Johnston, the half-sister of Mary Ball. Col. Eskridge married, second, Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Vaulx.

From a story about George Washington's baptism (where he is named George after Col. Eskridge) "One of these is a certain important gentleman from "down the river", Col. George Eskridge of Sandy Points--he so belongs in the picture. He is a full-faced, dignified man, an eminent lawyer, and of high standing in the community. He long was the faithful guardian of young Mary Ball, now the wife of Augustine, and the mother of the child to be baptized. Much honor is come to him this day.'"

From George Washington Man and Monument by Marcus Cunliffe, 1958, A Mentor Book, New York and Scarborough, Ont., The New English Library Limited, London, p 33: speaking of the mother of George Washington, "...Mary was much attached to her guardian, a genial lawyer named George Eskridge; and it was apparently after him that she named her first-born child: George Washington. Otherwise he might perhaps have been given the family name of John; Lawrence and Augustine had already been used for his half brothers."

LAWS OF VIRGINIA, FEBRUARY 1745--19th GEORGE II.

    CHAP. XXVIII.
An act, to enable George Eskridge, to sell part of a tract of land, not exceeding three hundred and fifty acres, to raise money for the payment of his proportionable part of the debts of his Grandfather.

    I. WHEREAS George Eskridge, late of the county of Westmoreland, gentleman, deceased, was, in his life time, seised and possessed of divers tracts of land, a large number of slaves, and a considerable personal estate; and being so seised and possessed, made his last will and testament, in writing, bearing date the twenty seventh day of October, one thousand seven hundred and thirty five, whereby, among other specific devises and legacies, he gave and devised unto his son William Eskridge, and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten, a tract or parcel of land, lying and being in the parish of Cople, in the said county of Westmoreland, containing seven hundred acres, or thereabouts, and also ten slaves, to be annexed to, and go and descend with the said land, in tail; and all the rest and residue of his estate, after the payment of his debts, he gave to be equally divided amongst his children then living, as in the said will is more fully contained;

II. And whereas the said testator, at the time of his death, was considerably indebted to several persons in Great-Britain, and this colony, much more than the value of his personal estate amounted to, all which hath been long since administred and spent in the payment of his said debts; and the several devisees and legatees have been compelled to pay large sums of money, in proportion to the respective devises and legacies to them given in the said will, and particularly the said William Eskridge, one of the devisees, did not only pay several sums of money in part of his proportion of the said debts, but also suffered some part of the slaves so annexed to the tract of land to him given, as aforesaid, to be taken in execution, and sold for payment thereof; and for the payment of some other part of the said debts, the said William Eskridge took up money, upon interest.

III. And whereas the said William Eskridge is since dead, leaving issue George Eskridge, his eldest son, and heir at law, since whose death, the said George Eskridge, the grandson, hath been also compelled to pay, and engage to pay other sums of money, in part of his proportion of the debts of the said testator; and actions and suits are now daily brought, to subject the remaining part of the estate of the said testator, in the hands of his devisees, and their representatives, to the payment of debts due from him, the said George Eskridge, the grandson; his proportion of which, together with what sums have been paid, and engaged to be paid, by his said father William Eskridge, and himself, will amount to the full value of the slaves so annexed to the tract of land, given to the said William Eskridge, as aforesaid; which said slaves are liable to be taken in execution for the payment thereof:

IV. And whereas the said tract of land will become of little or no value to the said George Eskridge, the grandson, and unimprovable in case the said slaves shall be taken in execution, and sold, for payment of the said debts; and the said George Eskridge, the grandson, is willing that part of the said tract of land should be disposed of, for payment of the said debts, so that the said slaves may be reserved for the improvement and cultivation of the residue of the said land, and go and descend with the same:

    V. And whereas notice hath been published three Sundays successively, in the several parish churches where the said tract of land doth lie, that application would be made, by the said George Eskridge, the grandson, to this General Assembly, for leave to sell and dispose of the said tract of land, or some part thereof, pursuant to your majesty's instructions: Therefore, for enabling the said George Eskridge to pay his proportionable part of the debts of his said grandfather, and to the end the slaves so as aforesaid annexed to the said land, may be preserved to the said George Eskridge, the grandson, and the heirs of his body, in cultivating the remaining part thereof;

VI. May it please your most excellent majesty, at the humble suit of the said George Eskridge, that it may be enacted, And be it enacted, by the Lieutenant-Governor, Council, and Burgesses, of this present General Assembly, and it is hereby enacted, by the authority of the same, That from and after the passing of this act, it shall and may be lawful to and for the said George Eskridge, the grandson, and in case of his death his executors or administrators, and he and they are hereby severally impowered, to sell, to any person or persons who shall be willing to purchase the same, any part of the said tract of seven hundred acres of land, not exceeding three hundred and fifty acres; and that the said George Eskridge, the grandson, or in case of his death, his executors or administrators, shall and may, and he and they are further impowered, to make and execute all deeds and conveyances, necessary in the law, for assuring unto any purchaser or purchasers, a good estate, in fee simple, in the part of the said tract of land so to be sold: And such purchaser and purchasers, by virtue of such deeds and conveyances, shall, for ever after, peaceably and quietly hold and enjoy the said lands so respectively by them purchased, to them, and their heirs, for ever; and the money paid by such purchaser or purchasers, shall be applied towards the payment and discharge of the said George Eskridge, the grandson, his proportionable part of the debts of the said testator, and reimbursing him what money hath already been advanced by him, or his said father William Eskridge.

VII. And be it further enacted, That the remaining part of the said slaves unsold, together with all their future increase, shall continue annexed to, and go an descend with the residue of the said tract of land, in fee tail, according to the limitations in the will of the said testator.

VIII. Saving to the king's most excellent majesty, and unto all and every other person or persons, bodies politic or corporate, their heirs and successors, other than the persons claiming under the last will and testament of the said George Eskridge, deceased, their heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns, all such right, title, interest, claim, and demand whatsoever, of, in, and to any part of the said land herein before described, as they, or any of them had, should, or might have had, if this act had never been made.

IX. Provided always, That the execution of this act shall be suspended, until his majesty's approbation thereof shall be obtained

  1. 51.  Bailey Rust Glasscock Descendancy chart to this point (42.Nancy6, 33.Benjamin5, 25.John4, 11.John3, 2.Martha2, 1.George1) was born on 1 Apr 1807 in Millwood, Virginia; died on 16 Jun 1863 in Clark Co, Missouri; was buried in Liberty Baptist Church Cem, Fairmont, Clark Co, Missouri.

    Notes:

A biographical profile of Bailey is given in the History of Lewis, Clark, Knox, and Scotland Counties, Mo., 1887: "B.R. Glasscock, a pioneer settler of Clark County, was a native of Clarke County, Virginia, and was a fair representative of the good
old English type. His ancestors immigrated to Virginia when that state was a colony. In 1827, he moved to Clark County, Missouri by land, and settled upon wild land, the inherited property of his wife. He camped for some time, but as he was a fair
carpenter and a somewhat natural genius, he built a house, and as soon as matters could be arranged he returned to his native state, and brought back his family to the home in the wilderness. Here he lived, making farming his principal occupation, and
verged into a happy old gentleman; but, sad to relate here, during the war he met his death at the hands of those whom he had never mistreated, but on the other hand, whom he had befriended in time of need. He was a Democrat in politics, and his widow
is a member of the Baptist Church."

In the Old Settlers Special Edition printed 1983 we find: "Dr. Glasscock arrived in Clark County, Missouri in 1827. He camped for sometime, then returned to Virginia and brought his family to the home in the wilderness, located about 5 miles
southeast of Fairmont. He was a slaveholder and became a prosperous farmer. He was the father of 14 children, 11 of whom lived to be grown. On May 26, 1863, the Union Army executed two men at Fairmont, found guilty of bushwacking. On June 16, five
Union soldiers arrived at Dr. Glasscock's home saying they needed him as a witness on some cases being tried. Convinced that the soldiers intended to murder him, Dr. Glasscock told them to kill him now and get it over with. The soldiers assured him
and his three daughters, other family members not home, that he could return home in the morning. Obe, of the Glasscock black men, followed until the soldiers drove him back. The report of five muskets were soon afterwards heard. The next day Dr.
Glasscock's body was found about 200 yards from the road. His neck and skull were broken and the body pierced with five balls. The parties guilty of murdering this "rebel sympathizer" were never discovered or brought to justice."

Another account of Bailey's death is found in the History of Lewis, Clark, Knox, and Scotland Counties, Mo., and contains a letter by his daughters. "On Sunday, May 10, 1863, a detachment of Capt. Hahn's company of enrolled militia (Company K, 69th
Regiment under Lt. Thomas S. Staples) was fired upon by bushwackers, near Fairmont, and the Lieutenant and Private Mussetter were killed. Liuet. Staples was an excellant man, and well liked by all who knew him. On being notified, Capt. Thacker's
company (M, of the same regiment), and some militia from La Grange, in Lewis County, galloped over to Fairmont, scoured the country, and took some prisoners. Maj. C.W. Marsh (afterward Gen. Schofield's adjutant-general, and of Troy, Lincoln Co., Mo)
was sent to Fairmont to investigate the matter of the killing of Staples and the private soldier. He caused the arrest of Samuel Dale and Aquilla Standiford, who lived in the neighborhood, and tried them by a court-martial of militia officers. They
were found guility of being with the party that bushwacked Staples, and were executed on Tuesday, May 26, 1863, at Fairmont. On the night of June 16, 1863 (soon after Dale and Standiford were shot), Dr. B.R. Glasscock, who lived on the main road from
Memphis to Canton, about five miles southeast of Fairmont, and who seems to have been guilty of no other crime than that of being a rebel sympathizer, was taken out by five men and shot. The following statement of the particulars of this matter was
made by Dr. Glasscock's daughters and published in the Canton Press about July 1. Dear Sir...about ten o'clock at night June 16, five men came to our house and said they were Capt. Hahn's men, from Fairmont, and had come after father for a witness on
some case that was being tried there. He begged them to let him stay till morning, but they would not. He then bade his three children farewell (his wife being absent), and said they must do the best they could. He seemed fully convinced that they
intended to murder him, and told them if that was their intention, to perform the deed at his house, and not take him away. They said that was not their intention, and promised the children that he should come back next morning. By his request one of
his black men followed him about a mile, until they drove him back, not withstanding the entreaties of his master to come on. The report of five guns was soon afterward heard, and next morning search was made for him, but to no effect, and believing
at last that he had been taken to Fairmont, all the searchers returned to their business. About ten o'clock next day, as the soldiers came down from Fairmont on their way to Canton, they told one of our neighbors that they had found a dead man lying
about 200 yards from the road. This proved to be the body of our dear, dear father. His body was pierced by five balls, and his neck and skull broken. He had not been robbed, although he had some money with him. Major Marsh has taken the case in
hands, and is doing all he can to find the guilty. Yours very respectfully, The Daughters Of The Deceased. Clark County, Mo., June, 1863. It seems, however, that the guilty parties were never discovered and brought to justice. Other atrocities of a
similar nature were committed in the county during the war. At the outbreak of the war the people of Northeastern Missouri were strongly in favor of neutrality, but this could not be maintained by a people of such decided political differences." B.
Glasscock owned 120 acres, section 13, Clark County. He borrowed $2000 dollars from his father Uriel Glasscock May 1, 1839. On November 25, 1868, he sold sixty acres at $6 per acre. John Boord was Justice of the Peace presiding over the transaction.

The town of Fairmont is described in the Historical Atlas of Clark County, Mo., published in 1878, as follows: "Fairmont - 12 miles SW of Kahoka. Contains four stores, hotel, public school, post office, and church surrounded by an excellant farming
country. Among the early settlers in this vicinity were Micajah and Daniel Weber, Bailey Glasscock, Francis and Ralph Smith, and William Kerfoot. ". The total number of slaves in Clark County in 1860 was 405, and were valued for taxation at $171,300.
Slave holders numbered 129. The most owned by one individual was 16 by John N. Boulware. Micajah Weber father of his daughter-in-law owned 2 slaves, and Bailey Glasscock owned seven.
