CHAPTER XIII. DUKE YO UNG. HIS FIRMNESS-RUMOR-SYMPATHY-GREAT IN GOOD- WILL. Duke Young was born in North Carolina, Nov. 15, 1793. His father, John Young, a strict Calvinistic Baptist, removed to Tennessee when Duke was but a few years old, and educated his family as best he could. In that early day, the facilities afforded for doing this were very poor. Duke must therefore be content with a smattering knowledge of English gram- mar and arithmetic, as well as reading and writing. When but a boy he was fond of reading good books, and eagerly sought such and studied them closely. Hence, when he became a man, he was much better informed than the majority of persons of his age in the neighborhood in which he was brought up. In the spring of 1817, he came to the State of Missouri, and fortunately settled in a community in which he had the privilege of hearing preaching, such as it was, now and then. He soon became deeply interested on the subject of religion, and united with the church then called "New Lights," or the "Christian Order." Very soon after this he began to speak publicly in the church of which he was a devoted member. But he was not altogether satisfied with the usages or 251

Duke's life is pure conjecture before he shows up in Lafayette County, Missouri. Well if you examine the base documents in the LaFayette County land records and a
history written on Duke by a man that knew him, everything changes.
http://eris.uky.edu/catalog/xt798s4jmj8h_257/text? Is the reference you want. Duke's father is John. Given that he was in Missouri in the Spring of 1817, he was not married in white County, Tn. Likely he married Sarah Lovelady in Cooper County, mo although the records could be in Coopet,
Howard or St Charles Counties, Mo. Itis known that Loveladies, Linvilles, Bowers, Youngs, Ewing's, etc all stopped in the area before moving to Western Missouri.

Morning Sherry,

Right now I have John Young as the father of Duke Young. I am basing this on land deal off of the BLM GLO site in which John Young assigns some land to Duke Young. Later we have the first hand knowledge of a man who knew Duke who states that his father is John Young and that Duke was born in North Carolina. This John Young is the same one on the same page in the 1830 census of Lafayette County as Duke Young. This John Young does not appear on any 1840 census. I suspect that he died in late 1837 or early 1838 as that is when Absalom and Thomas Lovelady Young purchase land all on the same day in Lafayette County along with Duke Young. Those people who have John Young as the father of Duke Young generally have John?s death year as 1838. And for want of anything else I am inclined to agree. Stan will be going to Lafayette County later to hopefully pick apart their records.

Christian Conference for Missouri met in September in Tarbo grove, La Fayette County. (Letter from Joel H. Haden, Retireing Valley, Howard Co.). Elders present: Thomas McBride, Duke Young, Zachariah Linville, Sion Bradley, Bryam Lewis, and Joel H. Haden. Unordained: Richmond Roberts, William Burton, James Lovelady. Lovelady was made an elder. Letter mentions that followers of Joseph Smith are settling in Jackson County near the boundary line, perhaps 100 in number, and plan to rebuild the Temple.

Duke Young, married Sarah Lovelady, another sister of James Lovelady. he named one of his sons William Johnson Young (b 1818). Johnson name must have connected to Young name, rather than Loveladys.

Duke's sister Elizabeth Elliott, widow, with family in Bates Co, Missouri, living next door to a Lew Johnson (1815 TN) wife Polly and children, Edward Benjamin and Nancy.

These Youngs in the Johnson family are likely connect to the Duke Young family somehow. Looks like Granville marrying into the Johnson family is also indirectly marrying into the Lovelady/Duke Young connection. Also, Barnett Johnson
might have married into the Duke Young family as well.

Research Notes:
Duke did have a daughter her age, but he never showed up in Kentucky. His father, who I believe to be Absalom, did live in KY and had daughters close to her age, and he did live in Kentucky. She might be a sister to Duke. Some other family members went to Kentucky that she could have been the child of. There is no evidence that she is even a Young, except the fact that she is buried with close family members of Duke. She does not appear to be a Womach.

Parker Morris in 1850, They're in Kenton Co KY and Louisa says she was born in KY.

By 1880 census she had died and Parker living with his dau and s-i-l - the dau says her mother was born in VA. Morris' parents born in MD - whatever that's worth.

Hiram Morris, a son, also says his mother born KY in his 1880 census.

I don't have Duke ever in KY - only b NC and rest of time in MO -at least till 1850 census. When did he go to Kansas? Obviously bet 1850 and when he died, but... I don't have anything on that.

Guess Louisa got hooked onto Duke because of the cemetery. Very curious how they wound up in the family cemetery. But easy assumption to make.

In 1860 Parker and some kids living with a Vanburen Hensley family - didn't find any connections with them. They lived next to a Young - transcribed as "Rief" but can't read it. Born 1830, Missouri, a carpenter, wife Mary born in Ohio and child Ernest 2 - 1858 - born in KY -- nothing to say he's any of our Youngs that I could find. I have a few Youngs born bef 1830 KY as a potential family member to R Young -- but ... ??? will take more studying out
