    Notes:

    On February 26, 1776, Brigadier General John Dent of Charles County recommended Samuel Stone Jr. as ensign of Captain Robert Sennett's Company of militia, and the recommendation was accordingly passed by the Council on March 7, 1776.6 Before the "Worshipful Richard Barnes", Samuel Stone on February 7, 1778, took the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity to the State of Maryland in Charles County.

    In 1783 the heirs of Samuel Stone (three in number) were taxed on 583 acres of "Poynton Manor" in Upper Durham Hundred.

    At the request of Samuel Stone, the following mark was recorded on Nov 30, 1747: a crop and 2 slits in each ear and an overkeel on the right ear.

    Samuel is mentioned as next of kin in the inventory of his aunt, Ann Fowke. In the land records are deeds splitting a tract he bequeathed to his sons David and Walter Hanson Stone. Michael Jenifer Stone and John Hoskins Stone were surety.

    Page 310. Deed, recorded at the request of Michael Jenifer Stone, Esq, for the use of David Stone. Jul 7, 1788 from Walter Hanson Stone of CC, to David Stone of CC. Whereas Samuel Stone, decd, father to both the parties afd, did, by his will, bequeath that his dwelling plantation, being part of Pointon Manner, should be and remain to the sd Walter Hanson Stone and sd David Stone, in fee simple, equally to be divided between them, and the parties afd being willing to make a fair, equitable, and equal division of the sd land, agreeable to the will afd, with as little trouble and expense as possible, this deed witnesses that the sd Walter Hanson Stone, in consideration of the premises and in consideration of the fraternal love and affection that he has for sd David Stone, and in consideration of 5 shillings to him in hand paid by sd David Stone, sd Walter Hanson Stone confirms to sd David Stone, in fee simple, 1 moiety of that tract of land before mentioned, laid off as follows: beginning for the out lines of the whole tract of land afd at a stone by the edge of the marsh on the north side of Nanjemoy Cr, being the dividing boundary between the afd tract of land (lying in CC and part of Pointon Manor) and Gerard Fowke, and running thence N 30 degrees E to another stone in the woods near the edge of a small old field, also a dividing boundary between the afd land and the land of Gerard Fowke, thence to the main Branch and down sd branch until it falls into Stones Cr, and with the last afd Cr until it comes to Nanjemoy Cr or Avon River, and with sd Cr or River until it comes to the Thatched House Gut, and with sd gut to the 1st bound stone, supposed to contain and laid off for 645 acres and 12 perches, and for the division of the same, and to ascertain the part meant, mentioned, and hereby intended to be conveyed by sd Walter Hanson Stone to sd David Stone, beginning at a stone now fixed in the earth at the end of 60 perches from the 2nd to the 3rd bound stone of the whole tract of land afd, and running thence 14 ½ degrees W 78 perches to another stone now fixed in the earth on a level near where the gate now stands and a small distance from the edge of the woods, thence S 10 ½ degrees E 299 perches to a stone now placed by the side of a locust tree at the edge of the marsh and continuing by the same line until it falls into Nanjemoy Cr or Avon River, and with the sd Cr the lines of the whole tract of land afd until it comes to the 1st stone in the woods, that is to say, with Nanjemoy Cr or Avon River until it comes to the Thatched House Gut, then with the gut to the stone by the side of the marsh, the 1st boundary of the whole tract as afd, which sd moiety is the west half of the whole tract, containing and now laid off for about 322 acres 2 rods and 6 perches.     Page 397. Bond of Conveyance. We, David Stone, Michael Jenifer Stone, and John Mitchell, of CC, bind ourselves to Walter Hanson Stone of CC, in the sum of 1000 £, this Jul 7, 1788. Samuel Stone, late of CC, decd, by his will, bequeathed to sd Walter Hanson Stone and David Stone, his 2 sons, his dwelling plantation, to be equally divided between them. By mutual agreement, it was divided and sd Walter conveyed to sd David, by deed dated today, the part allotted to sd David. If sd David shall, at the request of sd Walter, convey the rest of the land, then this bond becomes void. Signed - David Stone, M.J. Stone, John Mitchell. Wit - Richd Barnes*, Henry Barnes*.     I, Samuel Stone Jr of CC, am sick and weak in body but of sound and disposing memory and understanding.
    To my sons Walter Hanson Stone and David Stone - all my lands in Durham Parish, to be equally divided between them. If either of my sons die under age 21 & without issue, then the afd lands to be equally divided between my 2 surviving sons_
    To my son Walter Hanson Stone - 1 Negro boy named Tom and 1 Negro girl named Margret.
    To my son David Stone - 1 Negro boy named Joe and 1 Negro girl named Monaca.
    To my son Alexander. Stone - 1 Negro man named Charles, 1 ditto named Clem, 1 Negro woman named Young Sarah, 1 Negro boy Jack, 1 Negro girl Henny, and 1 ditto Lucy.
    To my daughter Sarah Stone - 1 Negro man named George, 1 Negro woman Terry, 1 Negro boy Henly, 1 Negro girl Mary, 1 Negro woman Milly, and 1 Negro boy Isaac.
    The rest of my estate I leave to be equally divided amongst all my children.

    On May 26, 1778, letters testamentary were granted on the estate of Samuel Stone Jr to Thomas Stone, Esq, the executor. Securities = Daniel Jenifer and John Hoskins Stone of CC, Bond = 10,000 £ Appraisers: Richard Barnes and William Winter Jr. On Jun 20, 1778, the inventory was received, amounting to 1233 £ 19 shillings 7 pence.

Includes: Negro boys Tom (aged 13), Joseph (7), John (5); Negro girls Margret (13), Monaca (10), Henny (3), Lucy (14), Mary (5) ; Negro men Charles (28), Clem (20), George (26), Joseph (67), Will (35), Henry (45); Negro women Sarah (30), Tracy (24), Milly (17), Sarah (50); Negro children Hendley, Isaac; 10 horses, 60 cattle, 142 hogs, 110 sheep; 6 beds and furniture; lumber, wearing apparel, 1 cart with ox body, 1 pair cartwheels, 1 mahogany desk, 309 lbs of bacon, 110 barrels of Indian corn.
