John^ Pollock

Notes:

The earliest record found for one of Robert Pollock's sons was that of John Pollock who in 1790 appeared on the muster roll of a military unit composed of men from Washington, Sullivan, Green and Hawkins Counties. John Pollock also appeared on he militia roster of the Jefferson Regiment from Hamilton District in 1794 and a Jesse Pollock was on the Green Regiment roster from Washington District. Assuming that John Pollock was a young man about 20 years old in 1790, this would make him born about 1770. This approximation is corroborated by other evidence of his age: on the 1820 census of Bedford Co, TN he was listed as over 45 years of age (born before 1775).

Since no other Pollock men, except for the previously mentioned Jesse, seemed to have served in these units, it seems likely that John was the oldest son of Robert Pollock. This Jesse Pollock was probably from North Carolina and not related. He may have been the Jesse in Seriven Co, GA, in 1806. Robert's younger sons seem to have been born by 1785, judging from their appearance on tax rolls around 1805. This would perhaps set Robert's birth date at about 1740. By May, 1808, Robert's sons appear in the civil records of White Co, TN.

Son John Pollock removed to Bedford Co, TN, although just when is not certain. A William Polk had entered a land claim in Bedford Co. in 1807 on Big Flat Creek, the very area where John Pollock eventually settled, and perhaps this was the son William who had recently fled Anderson Co. John, however, was not listed on a tax roll taken in 1812, unless the John Polk shown was actually him. Joseph Hastings was listed on the 1812 tax roll, however, along with many of his North Carolina kinsmen. John was surely there by 1815 when his son Samuel married Susanna Hastings, although no records were found before February, 1819, when the heirs settled the estate of her father, Joseph.

According to family tradition, John Pollock manufactured gun powder on the Duck River. As previously discussed, he appeared on the 1820 census of Bedford Co, TN. He was listed between the households of Samuel Pollock and James Pollock. Robert Pollock was two households down from him. John's age was listed as over 45 (born before 1775) and the others were young men in their 20's or late teens. They are assumed to be his sons and there were also four other boys in his household, along with two girls and his wife. One of these boys may have been the William Pollock who purchased a tract of land in 1830 in Bedford Co. In 1830 John (listed as John Polk) was shown on the census as a man in his 50's and, therefore, born 1771-1780. This, in combination with the 1820 census, puts his birth in the period 1771-1774.

John Pollock's place of birth is subject to considerable debate. In 1837 in Bedford Co., his daughter Elizabeth married William H. Anthony, a Methodist minister of German descent. Their son, Roddy Anthony, stated that his mother's people (the Pollock's) came from Pennsylvania. He, as well as his brother James Frederick Anthony, said that their Pollock grandmother's name was Alsey. They said their mother had three brothers: John, Benjamin and Robert Pollock with no mention of a Samuel or James. Three of the children of John and Alsey were located in the very important 1880 census which asks the birthplace of a person's parents. The oldest sibling, Robert Pollock, age 81, was living in Bedford Co. He was listed in the household of his daughter Alcie Pollock Longley and he stated that both his father and mother were born in Ireland. His sister, Elizabeth Pollock Anthony, age 68, was living in Moore Co, TN, in 1880. She said that her parents were both born in North Carolina. Her brother Benjamin Pollock, age 77, was also in Moore Co. He said that his father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother had been born in North Carolina.

So, we have three siblings and three different places of birth for their father, John Pollock. Of course, this seems absurd, but it is not that unusual in genealogy where evidence is collected from older folks with their failing memories. The daughter's response of born in North Carolina, of course, contradicts evidence given by her sons as shown above. Discounting the North Carolina answer due to the contradiction, this surely means that the Pollock family was originally from Ireland and that they emigrated to Pennsylvania before the Revolutionary War. John was probably born near the time of the move, but whether in Ireland or in America cannot now be determined. Since they were Protestants, it is likely that they were of Scots-Irish descent from Northern Ireland and probably made their way down the Virginia valley from Pennsylvania perhaps staying in Virginia and/or North Carolina for a while.

John Pollock's wife was named Alsey (spelled variously as Alcie or Alcy) which at the time was a common nickname for Alice. Her maiden name is not known. Estimates of her age from census records are the same as her husband: born 1771-1774. Two of her children listed her birthplace as North Carolina which seems entirely consistent with the other evidence. If this were the case with the common migration patterns being what they were, then she and John were almost surely married sometime around 1790 in what is now eastern Tennessee. This would imply that she came to this area when her family went west from the Carolinas. John and Alsey Pollock were probably in Sullivan Co. when their oldest child John Pollock was born.

Among John Pollock's sons and grandsons, there seemed to be fewer farmers than would be expected and many more carpenters and skilled craftsmen, with the novel occupation of wagon maker (or wagon wright) occurring several times. The occupation of wagon maker was extremely rare in the census records of small Tennessee towns of the mid-1850's. Pollock wagon makers found on the census so far are as follows: John Pollock (Robert, Sr's g-g-grandson), Joseph H. Pollock (Robert, Sr's g-g-grandson), and Benjamin Pollock (g-grandson to Robert, Sr.). It would be most interesting to learn the occupation of John's son Samuel since two of the wagon makers were his sons.

From the Seibel Family Genealogy the following was found:
John was found with Robert Pollock Esq., Robert Pollock, Jr., Benjamin Pollock and Joseph Pollock. A son-in-law said the Pollocks were from Pennsylvania. John began military service in 1790 performing service in 1790 against the Chickamouga Indians and in a group from Washington, Sullivan, Green and Hawkins counties. In 1793 he was in Gen. John Sevier's Etowah Campaign in Capt. Samuel McGaughey's company. In 1798 in Knoxville, TN, John and Philimon Higgins received a passport to go with their families from Knoxville to Stogdon's Valley [Stockton's Valley?] on the Cumberland River by way of Johnson's ferry on the Clinch River. In 1801 and 1806 he is listed as living in Anderson Co., TN; in 1812 he lived in Bedford Co., TN. He served in the War of 1812 as a corporal in Capts. Wm. He witnessed the death of Eli Bearden in 1831 Bedford Co, TN (said at time of death owned several tracts of land adj Samuel Pollock) [Easley, SC Southern Historical Press, Inc., 1988] page 84.

He was involved in a law suit on December 28, 1843 in Bedford Co, TN, brought by James Deery vs. Samuel Pollock and John Hastings. Said Pollock was a resident of Alabama and is endebted to Deery. Pollock is entitled to a share of the estate of Susannah Hastings, dec'd and was ordered to pay complt (Ibid., p 89 from Court Minutes 1837 - 1845 p 283)

He was involved in a law suit circa 1844 in Bedford Co, TN brought by James Deery. Said Samuel Pollock of Benton Co., AR [perhaps AL] was endebted to Deery for $118.25 due in 1827 but Pollock was insolvent. Pollock is one of 6 distributees of estate of Susannah Hastings, dec'd [Ibid., p 108 from Court Minutes 1840 - 1848 p 117]

Susanna Hastins (listed as Susanna Pollock, wife of Samuel, heir of Joseph Hastings) [Marsh and Marsh Land Deed Geneology, p 68] was born circa 1794 Orange Co, NC. She died after 1850 (and could not be located in any records after 1850 census). She appeared on the census of 1850 Benton Co, AL (Dist. 30, p 441), Susanna Pollock, age 56, born NC.

According to Robert Anthony's brother, James Frederick, Robert volunteered in Colonel Peter Turney's 1st Tenn. Regiment (The 1st Confederate), mustered in and left the state in April 1861, before the state seceded. Robert served in all the battles in Virginia, first at Manassas and ending at Gettysburg. He fought in the famous Pickett Charge and lost his left leg above the knee.

The following are answers Roddy Anthony provided to the authors of "The Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionnaires"

At the time of the questionnaire, he lived in Tullahoma, Tenn. Route 1. He was 80 years and 10 months old. He was born on the waters of Thompson's Creek, Bedford Co, TN in 1841. He was living in Franklin Co., now part of Moore Co., TN when he enlisted in the service of the Confederacy. Before the war he was a miller and farmer. His father was a traveling minister in the Tennessee Confederacy. Roddy did not own any land at the start of the war. Neither his parents or himself owned any slaves. His parents owned 110 acres of land valued at $1500 when the war started. They lived in a frame house with 6 rooms. When he was young, Roddy plowed, hoed, cradled, ran a saw mill and griss mill. His father farmed when he wasn't on the preaching circuit. His mother "done" cooking, spinning, weaving, cutting and making clothes. His parents did not have any servants. The community held all work with honor and high respect. All white men in the community engaged in work, none of them led lives of idleness. Roddy said that the men of the community that owned slaves did not feel better than anyone else. Slaveholders and non-slaveholders mingled on an equal basis. Everyone was sympathetic to each other. Slaves had no influence in the political process. Roddy stated that all industrious young men had to do to make something of themselves was to show an industrious will, they weren't discouraged by slaveholders. Roddy attended a public free school, the only school in the community, for 24 months "for as my memory alow". The school ran for 2 1/2 to 3 months of the year. The school was at the door until he moved away then it was 2 miles away. School was not attended regularly by the children of the community. The teacher was a man, people didn't think a woman could teach in "them" days.

Roddy enlisted in the Confederate army in April, 1861 in Winchester, Franklin Co, TN. He served under Peter Tuney, 1st Tennessee (The 1st Confederate). His company was sent to Richmond, Virginia first. It was a little over a year before they were engaged in battle, the first being the Seven Pine below Richmond. The following is Roddy's experience in the war:
"I lived in camp all right nothing to complain of. Very well clothed in camp. Slept on our blanket some time cold some time warm had beef and flour bred had very little corn bread. Some of the boy complained of getting hungry but I never but one time when we were on our retrea[t] from Richmond to Yorktown. We had to take soldiers life in cold and disease. I was in hospital with attack of Rheumatism and Jaundice something like a month with reasonable treatment at Lynchburg Virginia (1862). I was in hospital while in prison at Fort Delaware with small pox about 40 days very roughly treated but got over it. This is my prison life in full. After the battle of Manna we went to Camp Fisher on the Potomac River we were not in this battle (but) was on the battle field wintered and drilled. After Seven Pine the big battle below Richmond lasting several days. Cedar Run (in Virginia) Sharpburg, Maryland, Fredrickburg, VA, Chancelsville, VA, Gettysburg, Penn. Captured there on the 3 of July 1863 placed in Fort Delaware prison till June 8, 1865 released on parole and sent home. Came on the train to Tullahoma transportation furnished free. W.A. Marshall and my self came on the same transportation from Fort Delaware home. I got home on the 10 of June".

After the war, Roddy was a carpenter doing cabinetry. He lived in Wartrace for 7 years. After the death of his father, he bought a place in Moore County. He attended the Methodist Church and served as a justice of the peace for two terms. He listed his father's name as William "Harris" Anthony. Brother James listed the name as William "Horace". Roddy's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Pollock, daughter of John and Alsey Pollock who lived near Roseville in Bedford Co. He agreed with Robert that his paternal grandparents were German, living and dying in Tennessee. He stated that his mother's people came from Pennsylvania and they were from Ireland.

According to brother James' answer in "The Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionnaires" Nicholas Anthony volunteered in a confederate regiment in 1862 serving only a few months and was discharged due to a disability.

"My name is James Frederick Anthony, at the time living in Bell Buckle, Tenn, 76 1/2 yrs. old. I was born in Franklin Co, TN. A confederate soldier in Company B - 28 Tennessee Cavalry. My father was old style Methodist Circuit rider ... my father being a minister had often as many as 15 churches under his charge and preached every day in the week and so of course was at home less than 1/3 of his time. While Father was gone, Mother had charge of her six boys, did all the house work, carded and spun and wove and would cut and make the clothes for her family, including her own, doing the sewing with her fingers. She never used a sewing machine in her life. They had no servants ...

I went to school two or three months every fall - advanced rapidly - had completed the Bluebacked Speller at 14. School was about three miles [away] ... I enlisted in the Confederate army in November 1864 and was sworn in the woods in Lincoln county in Company B 28th Tenn. Cavalry, Capt. Reed Holmer, Major Jordan Hayes Battalion; Brig. Gen. B.J. Hill. [Our company was first sent] to follow Hood's army out of Tennessee but got cut off. We turned back and went out through East Tenn. Our company was in only one regular battle and I was 30 miles away with a scouting party at the time. I was always with a scouting party - Our battles were "shoot and run" but we did not always work the lead. I was cook for my mess and I will tell how the best bread I ever ate was made. The boys got the meal and of course it was not sifted but I spread an oil cloth on the ground, put the meal on it, took a canteen of good branch water, poured it on the meal and worked it to the right consistency. Took a flat rail, rolled out my dodgers and filled my rail full. Sat it up before the fire until it toasted brown on one side - then turned the bread over & toasted the other side - of course there was some in the middle not quite done ... but we had appetites and I want to say I never in all my life ate better bread. And we ate hundred of meals of just such bread and nothing else and this is to some extent how we lived in camp. Our uniforms were uniform ragged! There was no two suits alike. We had rags of all sizes, rags of all shapes, rags of all colors, texture and makes; rags of bright colors and gloomy ones too; rags of all shades the world ever knew. "Rummage amongst them and twist them around; But a suit that will please you can never be found!" I was paroled in Chattanooga on the 16th day of May 1865. I have my parole now. We were discharged about sundown and given transportation to Tullahoma on a freight car. We climbed on the top and laid down and were soon asleep. The train either stopped or ran very very low for we were only about 30 miles from Chattanooga when daylight came. We landed at Tullahoma about two o'clock - walked six miles home, from there and found the whole family down with small pox - could not go in the yard - slept a whole week under a shade tree - But oh! how thankful I could see and talk to my mother. [Since the close of the war] being under age I was subject to my father's demands for two years. He sent me to school for ten months which is practically all the education I ever got. My life since the war has varied but slightly from the general run of Confederate soldiers. The war taught me that a man could do without everything he couldn't get so I took as my motto "Pay as you go and when you can't pay don't go". I don't only preach this but I practice it. My estate is not large but it is worth one hundred cents on the dollar. I have had nine children born to me, six of whom were raised to maturity - Five of them are now living and to my credit - there is not one of them has ever served term in the penitentiary yet. I never held an office. I ran for a county office once and I didn't think I had an enemy in the world. When the votes were counted I concluded that my friends were "darned nigh" as scarce as my enemies. However "Alls well that ends well" and I have no fears for the rest of my allotted time for I can say with the poet in all sincerity, "What ever my lot, thou hast taught me to say it is well with my soul".

The following was sent to the authors on Mar 17, 1922:

"... In the fall of '64, Maj. Jordan Hayes had instructions to raise a battalion of cavalry, he raised three companies of perhaps 50 men each. - or boys, I should say - for there were not sufficient whiskers in the entire bunch to line a birds nest. We attempted to go out with Hood's army but were cut off - we turned and went out through East Tenn. and into North Carolina across South Carolina and across Georgia below Atlanta into Alabama, to a point on Coosa River some miles below Gadsden, where we were when the war ended. We broke camp there May 15th 1865 and were paroled in Chattanooga on the 16th and come into Tullahoma in a box car - upright however - on the 17th. I make no claim to any heroic deeds, but am entitled perhaps to one distinction, I belong to a family whose father and four sons all served in the Confederate army and were all honorably discharged - the three oldest served or two of them at least, served in the first regiment made up in the state and I, the youngest - in the very last command made up in the Confederacy and perhaps the last whole command paroled".

Mrs. Tennessee Scott, wife of Thomas Scott of Providence died Saturday morning at age 58 years, 9 months and 6 days. It was a very sudden death, she was sick only a few hours with cramps of some kind. She was born in Carroll County, Georgia and her maiden name was Wallin. She lived in Burleson County about 45 years and had four children, Henry Scott and Frank Scott and Mesdames J.H. Duckworth and Will Thomas. She also leaves 4 brothers of whom A.P. Wallin of Caldwell is one. She was a member of the Methodist Church for over 40 years and was buried in Providence Cemetery.

They also reported, specifically:

I then called the cemetery and was told that the section did exist, that it was just beyond the 333 and for the volunteer to check with the office if they needed help. I was told C334 was Oral E Wiley; and just north of 333, last corner lot, NE corner of Section C.
Space 1 is Sarah,
Space 2 is Horace,
Space 3 is not marked
Space 4 is Oral E. Wyley

I went out and looked for Horace Anthony and his wife's headstones.....
you gave the locatioin of Section C #334.......
the markers are not there!!
I found the ones for Oral E Wylie, who's still living, and
his wife Ruby Wylie, which, but Horace and his wife have no markers.
So, I call Memory Gardens 806-665-8921,
spoke with Gena Zuniga, her and her husband Daniel run the place.
Gena went out and looked, found nothing there, returned to her office and looked up the paperwork. She said the Anthony family was supposed to purchase a marker from LaGrone Monument Company(probably in Amarillo), but show no paperwork where they did. Gena also said that Memory Gardens had a fire in 1995, and no other paperwork exsists concerning the Anthonys. I would think you could find out about the fire though our local newspaper The Pampa News 806-669-2525.

Clarence W. Anthony died January 4, 1992, one day after his 83rd birthday. He was born in Marlow, Oklahoma to newspaper editor William Bruce Anthony and Sarah Shaw Anthony, who were both born in Tennessee. After graduating from Norman High School, he received a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1930. Clarence made his career at Oklahoma Gas & Electric Company, retiring as Senior Vice President for Operations. He was a Registered Professional Engineer and member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engieers.

Clarence was predeceased by his wife, Lucy Mae Anthony and son, Jim Mitchell, and is survived by his sister-in-law, Lillian Anthony of Norman, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Smith of San Antonio, Texas; and grandsons, Mark Mitchell of San Diego, California and Greg Mitchell of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A service of interment will be conducted by Reverend Joe Shackleford at Rose Hill Mausoleum on Tuesday, January 7, 1992 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Luke's Methodist Church, Oklahoma City. Hahn-Cook/Street and Draper Funeral Directors.

Boy's Leg Cut By Bus Ai Gas Station Billy Ed Martin, 4-ycar-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Martin of Albuquerque, N. M., suffered a leg laceration and bruises when struck by a Cap Rock bus backing out of a service station on South Cuylcr street about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. . The child, who is visiting with his aunt, Mrs. Ed Wiley, and Ruby May Wiley,
5, were walking down the street when the bus backed from the station, Mrs. Wiley told a News reporter today. She said that someone saw the children and yelled to the bus driver, J. D, Gruesendorf, who stopped just as the bus reached the children. The child was taken to the office cf a local physician who topic stitches in a gash on the right thigh and treated leg bruises. The child was later taken to the home of his aunt.

Martha M. Summers, 83, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Carey Skinner officiating. Private burial was in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.

Mrs. Summers was born October 15, 1923, in Elida, N.M., to Fred and Pauline Stieg.During WW II, she worked in the shipyards to put herself through college. She was employed as office manager and accountant for Mattie Hedgecoke Properties for 40 years until her retirement. On Oct. 11, 1987, she married Robert B. Summers.

Mrs. Summers was a very vibrant and active woman, she referred to herself as being 49.999 years old, never growing old and always willing to begin a new adventure. She was a member of Eastern Star Chapter No. 787, Daughters of the Nile, Gavel Club, Newcomers Club of Amarillo and Red Hats. She had a passion for the Dallas Cowboys and made it a point to attend all of their home games until her health prevented her from doing so. She also loved to square dance and metRobert at a square dance. They were active in the Pioneer Promenaders and the Saints and Spinners Square Dance Club. Mrs. Summers was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Although she kept busy, her family was the center of her universe. Her children and granddaughters were the true love of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a daughter, Debra Del London; and two sons, Gary and Stacy London.

Survivors include a son, David London and wife Rhonda of Amarillo; a brother, Fred Stieg of Lake Conchas, N.M.; and two granddaughters, Holly Annand Lorra Leigh London of Amarillo.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Children's Rehabilitation Center, 1250 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106.

BREWER, Barbara Christine Anthony On Monday (May 31, 2004) Barbara Brewer of Manchester, gave up this life to begin a new life with the Father. Barbara was born on February 19, 1928 in Marlow, OK to William B. Anthony II and Lillian Click Anthony. Barbara married Eugene Brewer on June 25, 1948 and together they raised five devoted daughters, Rebecca Jean Callahan of Anadarko, OK, Ann Marie Brumley of Stillwater, OK, Janet Kathleen Stice of Manchester, Susan Elizabeth Yeats of Manchester, and Jennifer Elaine Blake of Windsor. After serving the Lord through churches in Oklahoma and Texas, Barbara and Eugene moved to Manchester in 1961 to plant a new church east of the river. So began Barbara's life work-ministering to the people of central Connecticut through the Manchester Church of Christ. In this capacity, Barbara served as an elder's wife, Bible class teacher, Women's Bible class teacher, coordinator of the Children's Bible School program, and - most recently -, Coordinator of the Senior Saints Ministry. However, Barbara's abiding trait is her gentle spirit, which served her well as she counseled, mentored, and inspired hundreds of Christian men and women throughout New England. Over the years, many Manchester families have known Barbara as a longtime teacher at Bowers Elementary School, Head Start teacher, and Brownie Troop Leader or through one of her many interests- including gardening, cake decorating, knitting and Bridge. Always eager to better herself, Barbara completed her bachelor's degree at the age of 52 and traveled extensively-including trips to the Holy Land, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and England. Although loved by many, Barbara was especially loved by her two younger brothers, William Bruce Anthony III of Plano, TX and Robert Edward Anthony of Houston, TX; and adored her sons-in-law, her 11 grandchildren and her countless brothers and sisters in Christ. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 4, at 11 a.m. at the Manchester Church of Christ, 394 Lydall Street, Manchester with burial to follow in the East Cemetery, Manchester. Calling hours will be held Thursday, June 3, at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
