    John Mitchell entered the Revolutionary Army as an Ensign. He served through the whole war with credit and rose to the rank of Captain. He retained through life a fondness for military affairs and at the time of his death was an officer in the Maryland militia with the rank of General.

    It appears from the records that Warrant Number 656, for 1100 acres of bounty land was issued May 1, 1816, on account of the services of William Smallwood, of Maryland, Major General, War of the Revolution. There are no details in reguard to his services and the date and place of his birth are not shown.
    Said warrant was issued in behalf of the following heirs: Priscilla Courts, sister to the soldier, who married John Courts: John Truman Stoddert, of Port Tobacco, Maryland, a minor, only child of William Truman Stoddert, a son of Lucy, a sister of the soldier, who married John Truman Stoddert: George Robert Leiper, and Lucy, his sister, the wife of Bernard Moore, only descendants of Elizabeth, another sister of the soldier, who married James Leiper: George Washington Grayson, Robert Harrison Grayson, a minor, children of Eleanor, another sister of the soldier, who married William Grayson: John Heberd Truman Stoddert Mitchell, a minor, son of John Mitchell who married Lucy Heberd Truman Stoddert, the daughter of Margaret Smallwood, another sister of the soldier, who married Walter Truman Stoddert.
