Celestine's birth becomes critical in determining who her father was because she seems to be the dau of John Means and not Tom Means.

She is married to David Burrell and Clarinda is 1; living next door to John and Elmire Meins (Means).

b.d. 1870 Liberty -- age 30 so b 1840
m to Jack Odell (Odle) and next door to Clarinda and James Burrell when they were liv w/ Dowdell - whoever he was.

(can't find her in 1880)

b.d. 1900 census Liberty - age 62 - (1837) widow Odell liv/w Clarinda Parker. Next door to James Means, son of John who I think is her father instead of Tom.

1931: grandson Sam Parker was informant on her D.C. and gave her b.d. as 1832 and said her father was Tom Means, and didn't know who her mother was.

John's wife Elmira was b 1825 and birth dates of their children we know start with 1842, meaning she was age 17. If Celestine was b 1840, Elmira could have been her mother (damn, they were young, but that was their custom.)
If she was b 1832 as Sam Parker said, or even 1837 as in 1900 census, she could not be Elmira's.

Her first born was James Burrell in 1858. So any age we have to pick from will work here. And David Burrell was b 1835; so, again, any of the ages will work here as well; though looking at this -- and the trends of the times, I don't think she was as old as 1832.

There is no record of a Tom Means anywhere in the time frame to be her father -- except the Tom who son of John and Elmira.

I am convinced that John is her father -- not an illusive Tom that all we had to go on was Sam Parker's best efforts, and he didn't know her mother. Clarinda had died in 1926; and Celestine died in 1931.

But due to the young age of Elmira and the slight discrepancy of her age, I think it is more probable that she is the daughter of a first wife and that Pauline is her sister by that first wife (see Pauline's individual note.)




Birth:
1832 as indicated in her d.c., 1840 as the year she indicated in two different census records. 1837 was also indicated in a 3rd, census; so that's possible. 16 Aug 1831 was given as her birth date in her application for pension (not dated), stating age 89 years old. We will assume Aug 16 was her birthdate.

There doesn't seem to be any record of Pauline's parents. John Means b 1814 is really the only candidate to be her father from what records are readily available.
Because of the closeness over the years of the families of Pauline and Celestine, and the closeness of their ages, it seems a pretty safe bet they were sisters. However the young age of Elmira, John's wife, it's really not possible that she s Pauline's mother and a squeeze to say she was Celestine's mother. So, we have to assume that John had these girls with a wife #1, who might have even died in childbirth with Celestine - or who knows - and he subsequently remarried in a year or two.

All this is pure speculation though. And short of finding wills or something, there doesn't seem to be a way to know for sure. But the closeness of these families, I think this is best guess.

1870, Liberty Co, Clarinda is 10 (b 1860 - b.d. and census date could make the difference)
1880, Madison Co Clarinda b 1861 moving away from 1859. - this is when we have her with Harris
1900 Liberty Co (again) Clarinda is b 1858, closer to the original '59, again, b.d. maybe w/ census date)
Madison is a distance from Liberty and there is that slight age difference. It's not looking so "sure fire" as it did.

Peter born 1878 (she was 18 - certainly feasible she met Harris somewhere and moved to Madison Co, then moved back to Liberty after separation/div, but doesn't seem like a likely scenario to me.
married Parker in 1884 she was 26 - back in Liberty Co.
Harris married Marguerite 1888 still in Madison Co, I guess.

But on the other hand, when she listed her children born, there were two unaccounted for. But looking at dates of her kids with Parker, there are enough gaps to allow for two lost Parker children.
married in '84; 1st ch b May 1886 (could have had one in '85); then one b '88; then twins in '92 - could have had one in between. They usually had their kids 2 years apart.
Anyway -- just thinking out loud! lol

Hey, Donna. Seems like I got distracted off this for a while, but I pulled it all back up today and I?m pretty sure I've figured it out.

Marie Harmon IS Marie Chesson/Chaisson. And Pauline Means was married to Valmore Chaisson first, then Harmon m2 and Shelby m3. There never was a Mary Harmon. All the census records of her showing ?Mary R? were Mary Roseline Chaisson. When it showed m-i-l, Pauline Shelby ? that?s Pauline Mean.

The Pauline Hebert b 11 Dec 1834 dau of Antoine Raymond Hebert and Marie Chelestine Trahan who was shown to be wife of Valmore Chaisson should be is Pauline Means whose mother was a Hebert ? and thereby maybe cause of the confusion. So, unknown who Pauline Hebert married.

If we found somewhere Mary Rosaline Chaisson was listed as Mary Harmon, then she was apparently using step-dad?s name. This adjustment makes everything ? I think ? make sense.

There is a death certificate available for two of Gilford's sons, Thomas and Joe.

Thomas (1888-1967) d.c. informant was Annie Mae Williamson (wife? dau?) who gave his mother as Rosa Lee Chezjean.
Thomas named a child Lillie Roseline.

Joe (1891-1969) d.c. informant was his son Ray who stated his mother was Rose Cheshire.

At first glance, okay. Rose/Rosa was Gilford's 1st marriage and may well be, but we know he married Mary in 1885 and was still married to her in 1930. The four children we know of (Joe and Thomas as well as Margrell and Charles who we see in 1910) were all born within those dates.

Research notes: 30 Jun 2010 for Mary Harmon as dau of Larry Harmon:

Very confusing on this family.
Mary is shown m to Gilford in 1900, 1910, and 1920 census. She states she had 15 children, married2. Married Gilford at age 24 in 1885. And she said she first married at age 15.
Indeed, there is a marriage record for she and Gilford for 1885 and she married with the last name of Helfin.

Both she and Gilford also indicated they are each their 2nd marriage.

There is a death certificate available for two of the sons, Thomas and Joe.
Thomas (1888-1967) d.c. informant was Annie Mae Williamson (wife? dau?) who gave his mother as Rosa Lee Chezjean.
Thomas named a child Lillie Roseline.
Joe (1891-1969) d.c. informant was his son Ray who stated his mother was Rose Cheshire.

At first glance, okay. Rosa was Gilford's 1st marriage and may well be, but we know he married Mary in 1885 and was still married to her in 1930. The four children we know of (Joe and Thomas as well as Margrell and Charles who we see in 1910) were all born within those dates.

Another oddity is where are all those 15 children?
in 1900, there are Margrell, 14; Thomas 12, Joseph 8, and Charles 5.(have found no other records on Margrell and Charles.) Many other children should have shown up here. Where are they? She states 10 are living.
In 1910, the only two living with them are Thomas 22 and Joe 19; states 7 living. (and Mary's mother Pauline Means Shelby)

Graveside services for Ernest Lee Williamson, 88, of Lake Jackson, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at Willow Hole Cemetery in North Zulch under the direction of Stroud Funeral Home of Clute. Mr. Williamson died Wednesday, Aug. 9 at his residence. He was born April 9, 1918, in Madison County. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1946 and retired from the Texas Highway Department in 1980 after serving 20 years as a drawbridge operator on the Bryan-Quintana swing bridge. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Annie Lou Williamson of Lake Jackson; sons Jerry Williamson and wife Roxanne of Lake Jackson and Thurman Williamson and wife Carol of Gilmer; granddaughters Renee Hill and husband Jerel and Julie Williamson, all of Gilmer; great-grandson Dustin Hill of Gilmer; sisters Vera Mae Thomas of Clute and Evelyn Winn of Houston; brother Aubra Williamson of Crestview, Fla., and many other loving relatives and friends. Crystal La Verne Hayes, 75, of Six Mile, Texas, formerly of Freeport, passed away on May 12, 2007, in Clute, Texas, with her family at her side. She was born in North Zulch, Texas, on August 31, 1931, to Jake H. and Bessie (Blair) Harris.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Cecil P. Harris ,and husband of 53 years, Roy Franklin Hayes.

She was a loving mother and the best Maw Maw ever.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna (Phil) Clark of Richwood, Gay Nell (Bill) Rains of Freeport, Tammy Hayes of Six Mile and Rethah (Bubba) Denais of Freeport; grandchildren, Shonda (Shane) Harwell, Jason (Joy) Hayes, Michael (Kimberly) Hayes, David Rains, Jennifer (Saul) Hernandez and Daniel Rains; great-grandchildren, Stefen Harwell, Justin Buzek, Darrin Buzek, Makayla Hayes, Jai Gaitan, Jazilyn Hernandez, Jennia Hernandez, Shane, Ruby, and Tyler Hayes, and two more on the way; sister, Dorothy La Rue of Bakersfield, Calif.; brother -in-law, Kenneth (Nina) Hayes of Jasper, Texas; plus many more family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at Lakewood Chapel and noon until service time Wednesday. (Viewing will also be 9 am until 5 pm Tuesday.)

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Braten officiating. Interment will be 10 a.m. at the Garden Valley Cemetery near Lindale, Texas.
