Now it looks as though Jane (wife of Leonard) died two days after her son Thomas was baptized - childbirth must have killed her. Did this same Leonard then remarry Eliz. Greenwood on 23 Nov 1687 - if he did. then, he didn't waste much time, though he obviously needed to find another wife to look after his baby.

NOW, from the above we know that Leonard's son, Thomas, was baptized up at Cartmel in the Lake District and it says that Leonard is from Churchtown. The only Churchtown on the UK atlas is the one in Lancashire and that is near Garstang (nearly at Goosnargh). Cartmel may have been Jane's home place. Thus, maybe this Leonard could be described as a Goosnargh Leonard Helme. If so,the link with Leonard of Virginia is in prospect.

The will of Maurice Lynaugh, dated 28 September 1751; probated 12 August 1755, bequeathed a Negro man to his grandson, Lynaugh, after his wife Mary's death. His daughter Margaret received all the remainder of his estate, under the same condits, she being his sole heir. [Book O, pg. 306, Stafford County] The Lynaughs had deeded land to Gabriel MUFFETT, of Prince William County and later filed suit against Gabriel in Chancery Court, 1752. [Deed book L, pg 209] Gabriel is believed to have been the husband of MARY HELM, daughter of Leonard Helm, the immigrant. The Lynaughs were probably early settlers in the colony of Virginia. Arthur, Rose and Mary Lynaugh arrived in 1655 and John Lynar in 1653, brought over by Ed Komp, George Cartlough and JOHN MEREDITH. John Lynar may have been the father of Maurice Lynaugh of Lancaster County, Virginia. A Margaret Lynaugh, daughter of Rose, was born 23 July 1754.
Thomas is not mentioned in his father Leonard's will. but is doubtless the son of Leonard Helm, the immigrant.. Possibly he had already received his share of the estate in land. He owned large tracts of land in Prince William and Fauquier Cties, which included Stafford County. Lynaugh, his son, was called "first cousin" by Captain William Helm, the son of Meredith, justice of Frederick County. In a civil suit in Frederick County, 4 August 1748, Thomas made a claim on the estate of Leonard Helm, the immigrant, which was not denied by Meredith, his executor.
Recorded in The Virginia Genealogist, Thomas, of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, bought land from John Madden of Hamilton Parish, Prince William County.
Thomas' will mentions that he had eight children; only six are verified (first six listed). It divided his land equally between his children.

Lynaugh Helm as he was a captain of a foot company of Prince William County Milita, Member of the House of Burgess in 1772 and 1778 and aided the Continiental army during the revolution. He reportedly was granted large tracts of land in Kentucky for his service (Conkwright P.97).

"14. Lynaugh Helm died soon after the war. In 1796 his son Achillis Helm, deeded 750 acres of his Illinois grant to Col. Simon Triplett of Loudoun County "in consideration of the trouble and expense of the said Triplett in getting a law passed by the Virginia Assembly to carry into effect his claim of 3,334 acres to which Leonard helm, father to Achillis, was entitled in right of his command in the Illinois Regiment."

Leonard Helm was an early pioneer of Kentucky, and a Virginia officer during the American Revolutionary War. Born around 1720 probably in Fauquier County, Virginia,[1] he died in poverty while fighting Native American allies of British troops during one of the last engagements of the Revolutionary War around June 4, 1782 in Jefferson County, Virginia (now Kentucky).

Illinois Campaign
Helm was commissioned a captain and asked to raise and lead a company of Virginians by the newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark. On January 2, 1778, Governor Patrick Henry gave Clark the authority to raise a regiment and secret orders to attack British forces and their allies on Virginia's frontier. Leonard Helm, who had served with Clark during Dunmore's War and had spent a lot of time in Kentucky, was given command of one of the initial four companies created to form this regiment. Captain Helm recruited soldiers from the Virginia militia from both Prince William and Fauquier Counties. Clark's unit was later known as the Illinois Regiment and participated in the Northwest Campaign.

Clark later appointed Helm as commander of the fort in present day Louisville, Kentucky. Captain Helm was killed while serving as the commander of this fort. Helm had sold some of his land for continental currency under the belief that the value of it would increase. Instead, the continental dollar became almost worthless and Helm died in poverty, his personal estate consisting only of his clothes.[1] Many years later his heirs received 4,666 acres (19 kmē) from Virginia for his service in the Illinois Regiment.

Thomas Helm was one of three original colonists to settle in Severn's Valley, KY in the 1780s. This area later became what is now Elizabethtown. In addition to being a farmer and landowner, he was a lawyer and had four sons who contributed to the political structure of the state. Married to Jane "Jean" Pope Helm, they had 14 children. some records show him to be married to Ann Watson 11 Apr 1763 in Anson North Carolina; however Ann Watson was proven to be married to a different John, who was son of a John.

It seems researchers on the Internet have the two Johns mixed up. The John who married Ann Watson in NC in 1763 was an officer in the Revolutionary War in North Carolina. He was married 1743 in Virginia; died 1829 in Georgia, He was the son of John Moffett, b c1715 Georgia; and Margaret (Mary) Christian. He is verified by wills, etc. This confusion became evident after working with Patty Derrick, shells@delaware.net, who descends from the NC John.
This John Helm was still in Virginia in 1771 in Fauquier County.

(Perhaps this is Gabriel, son of Gabriel - not George. The elder Gabriel had willed in 1758 that his minor children be placed in the care of Lynaugh and Leonard Helm.

We had a good meeting of the Jessamine County Historical Society last evening. I did a short presentation on the founding of Nicholasville. I would like to share my notes with you. I had maps, pictures, and plats
that went along with this, that made it a wee bit more interesting.

Achilles Helm the only son of Leonard Helm, make an exempt to recover his father's land in Jessamine County. But, was mostly unsuccessful in doing so. Helm's land had been lay off in three tracks of 500 acres in each.
On November 10, 1784, Achilles lay claim to all three tracks, only to discover, others had filed claim to the same land, and some had filed much earlier then Achilles. Achilles did manage to secure a part of upper track. This was just a little north of the town and took in what is called the Orchard today. This track he sold to Fisher Rice. The
remaining 250 acres of this track, had been claimed by Anthony Sandusky, and the heirs of Nathaniel Evans. This property was sold to Benjamin Blackford.

I was reviewing some geneaology sites and noticed your
question. As it happens, my mother, whose Uncle is the
Sidney Roy Moffett of whom you wrote, is visiting me
this week. So she and I will answer your question.
Sidney Roy Moffett, better known in the family, as
Sid or Big Sid or Uncle Sid, was the fifth child of
Franklin Sims Moffett and Louella Jacobs Moffett. He had
4 brothers, Arch Alonzo, who was my grandfather, Rev. William Charles Moffett, A Baptist Minister, Jesse Franklin Moffett, and Theodore Edwin Moffett; He also had one sister,
Rosa (Mrs. J.H. Baugh).

His father, Franklin Sims, was a native of Missippi, who moved to Texas at the age of 14. In 1881 he married Miss Louella Jacobs, for whom both my mother, Louella Grace Moffett Vine and myself, Louella Grace Vine Wetherbee, are named.

In 1886, he established a ranch on the Cibolo Section of LaSalle County. He was a leader in his community and was founder and trustee of the Moffett School District created for the Northwestern section of LaSalle County in 1927.

Uncle Sid was educated, according to my Mother, at the ranch. He served in the armed forces in France during World War I. He married Alma Tarver, from Cotulla, LaSalle Co., daughter of W. A. and Mattie Tarver, in 1923. They had two sons, Sidney Roy, Jr., and Clyde Tarver. Tarver was killed in Mexico in an auto accident in the late 40's or early 50's. Sid Jr., died in 1992 (we think that is correct.)

He was engaged in farming and ranching in LaSalle County for his entire life. He and Alma moved into Dilley and lived there until he died in the early 70's. Alma, who taught school for 50 years, dies in 1983.

However, Henry, wife and Lucinda wee listed in 1850, did not name Augustus. Rather Augustus was counted both with the Langs and with John Bounds in 1850. It's quite doubtful that he is the natural sone of Henry. But since he bears the name of Augustus, and Henry's father is Augustus, it's more likely he is an orphaned son of one of Henry's brothers.

I have a Frank Jones who married Edna Crow. Edna died in 1967 in Lubbock , Tx., and Frank died in 1974 in Lubbock. They had one child that I know of, Edwin Jones. If anyone has any info on this family please reply.

I.A. Bounds
TURNEY ? Funeral services for I.A. Bounds, 80, of Turney were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Thompson Funeral Home in Jacksonville with Rev. James Blaylock and Dr. John Gregson officiating.

Burial was in Jarratt Cemetery in Turney.

Mr. Bounds died Friday, Feb. 18.

He was born March 2, 1924 in Turney.

Mr. Bounds was a Funeral Assistant at Thompson Funeral Home for 27 years. He served in World War II on the island of Guam with the 20th Air Force Division of the Army Air Corps, 314th Wing in the 39th Group.

He was a deacon at Corinth Road Baptist Church for over 50 years.

Mr. Bounds was preceded in death by a son, Billy Neal Bounds; a brother, George Bounds; and a sister, Wanda Bounds.

Survivors are his wife, Billie Sue Bounds of Turney; sisters, Joy Smith and husband Jerry of Livingston; a sister-in-law, Odie Lee Bounds of Turney.

Pallbearers were Darrell Foster, Roy Foster, James Virgil Moore, Donny Foster, Eric Smith and Mike Turney.

Honorary pallbearers were Truman Goleman, Chuck Thompson, Russell Bolton and Rudolf Masters.
