In the name of God. Amen.
I Capt. William Ball of the parish of St. Mary's White Chapel in the County of Lancaster in Virginia being sick & weak in body but sound & Perfect memory Praised be ye Almighty God for the same & considering the frailty of this life being but a blast I doe make this my Last Will and testament in manner and form Following hereby revoking and making Void aother Will or Wills formerly by me made sealed or published.

First I give my soule to God that gave it me & commit my body to the Earth to be burried in decent order at the Discretion of my Executors hereafter named in hope and true confidence that I shall have a joyful Resurrection at the Last day thru the merits of my most dear & Precious redeemer the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give unto my Dr. wife all and every part of this 270 acres of Land whereon I now Live with all the housing & appurtances hereunto belonging and also my mill hereon standing during her Natural life and also full Power to plant, make and manure for her own use a Plantation if she please on every other Parcel of Land hereafter by me here by given & my will is that she bring up my dear Children until they be 16 yrs. of age in Writing, Reading &c. and that they be under the tuition of my sons William and Richard, and that whenever the said mill be out of repair my will is that my said sons William Ball & Richard Ball give their assistance to mend repaire or new build her and that they be paid for their paines as the mill earns it.

I give unto my said sons William Ball & Richard Ball all my Tract lyeing in this Neck next to Richard Cundiff's being about 950 acres to be equally divided between them provided they acquit all their right which they or either of them may possibly have of any and to that Divident of Land in Richmond County next above Perpetua Creek being about 1,000 acres on which my Quarter Plantation now is unto their two brothers Joseph Ball & George Ball.

I give to my dear wife 3 negroes called Sambo, Tom & Mary and 3 Englis or white servants at my Quarter in Richmond County called Robin_____James Canady & Sarah and a Silver salt siller, Tankard & Drinking Cup of Silver and which of my Cups she shall make Choice of.

I give unto my son William all the residue of my cups after my dear wife hath her choice of one.

I give to my son James Ball two slaves called Dominy & Kate and a boy and a girle.

I give to my son David Ball a girle slave called Poll.

I give to my daughter Margaret Ball two salve girls called Hanah & Betty thats at mother's.

I give unto my son Stretchley Ball a Girl Slave called Saran.

Major Ball was a vestryman of Christ Ch., Lanc'r Co., and Ch. Warden, 1743. In 1740 he and Mr. Joseph Ball were allowed to build a gallery in White Chapel Ch. for their families, provided that it be completed at the same time with the church and furnished in the same style with the west gallery. (Vestry Book.) In 1743 the vestry directed him to build a 20x16 vestry house.


14 Apr 1736: "James Ball of St Mary White Chappel, Lancaster County, gent. to Joseph Chinn of said parish and county. Whereas the said Joseph Chinn had taken to wife Elizabeth Ball late of the daughters of the said James Ball, by which said Elizabeth his late wife the said Joseph Chinn has issue two daughters to wit: Ann Chinn and Elizabeth Chinn both still living. In consideration of the natural love and affection which the said James bears for his said two grandaughters Ann and Elizabeth Chinn. !15 July 1754: Will of MAJ. JAMES BALL, OF BEWDLEY, 1754. In the name of God Amen I James Ball being in perfect health and memory thanks be to god do make this my last Will in Manner following viz I do first and most principly give and bequeath my Soul to God who gave it me in certain hopes notwithstanding my unworthyness to receive pardon of all my sins through the blessed merits and mediation of my deer redeemer Jesus Christ. Item I give to my Grand Son Burgess Ball all my lands in King George, Spotsilvania and Stafford Counties during his Natural life & at his decease I give it to his child or children as he shall think fit and to their heirs. Item I give to my Said grand son Twenty one Slaves viz. Dick, Bristor, Adam Rawleigh, & Alice yt I Bought of my son James, Lucy & her four children and her three grand children, Letty and her Seven children and all their future increase when he shall arrive to the age of twenty one or have lawful issue and that my exe'r keep a true account of the profits of the slaves out of which profits it is my desire my aforesaid grandson be well educated & when he shall arrive to the aforesaid age or have lawful issue, that he be possessed and entitled to ye the said slaves and their increase as also what shall arrive from the profits of the said slaves, but in case my said Grand Son die before he come to the age of twenty one and without lawful issue then I give the Said Slaves and profits to be equally divided among my Son and five Daughters and their heirs. Item I give to my Said Grand Son my clock and my two mares Blase and Fancy & what stock I shall have on the land before given him and all their increase when he shall come to the age aforesaid or have lawfull issue. Item I give to my Daughter Sinah and my four grand Sons viz. Jesse Ball son of my Daughter Frances, James Ewell and James Ewell son of eve Ewell and John Selden and their heirs five thousand acres of land in Prince Wm County to be laid off at the upper end of my mountain tract to them and their heirs equally amongst them. I give to my Daughter Eve one Slave named Sarah and all her Encrease which she has now only the use of. Item I give to my daughter Selden and her heirs ye land I bought of Benjamin Taylor. I give to my grand son John Taylor Fifty pounds Sterling to be paid him when he shall come to the age of twenty one but if he should die before that age then I give it to his Mother it being part of her portion. Item I give to my five Daughters all my household goods except my plate. The best bed and furniture which I give to my Son James. Item I give to my Grand Son Tobey Downman Thirty pounds to be laid out in land or a Slave and no otherways. Item I give to my grandson James Downman my watch and Silver Buckles. Item I give to my son James the use of all the remainder of my estate including my Slaves in his possession which he has now the use of all during his natural life and at his death to dispose of as he shall think fit. Item I do appoint my Son Exr of this my last will and testament and guardian to my grand son Burgess Ball and my will is that my estate be not appraised. !'As a census taker, he listed his own household as containing nine whites and 32 Negroes. That he may not have been the kindest of masters to these is indicated by an advertisement which he placed in the Alexandria paper for a runaway weaver named Immanuel. "His back and arms much scarred with the whip, proceeding from his uncommon villainy, " commented his owner. Tales have been passed down of his cruelty to his slaves, of their nicknaming him "Hard" Chichester, and what happened when he died. When Richard Chichester died at Mount Air in the room now known as the gun room, the slaves said that the Devil ran out from under his bed in the form of a red rabbit. An ironic footnote has been added to the legend by the present owner. During a severe storm in the 1920's, lightening struck Chichester's tombstone and broke off a fragment of his name. When [the current owner] went over to the graveyard at Newington to investigate the damage, she could find neither the missing pieces nor any footprints on the soggy ground to explain the absence. !Richard Chichester (c.1736--1796), son of Richard Chichester (d. 1743) and Ellen Ball Chichester of Lancaster County, was, through his mother, a distant relation of George Washington. He inherited his father's plantation, Fairweathers, and in 1759 married Ann Gordon (1743--1765) of Lancaster County. Shortly after Ann's death he moved from Lancaster to Fauquier County and married Sarah McCarty (d. 1826), daughter of his cousin Capt. Daniel McCarty of Mount Air, here mentioned. In 1774 Chichester bought land on Accotink Creek in Fairfax County, near McCarty's home and settled there with his family for the rest of his life. ! Burgess Ball was born 28 July 1749 at Bewdley in Lancaster County, Virginia, to Jeduthan Ball (1725-1749/50) and Elizabeth Burgess. Ball served as an aide to George Washington (1732-1799), a relative, during the early years of the American Revolution. He was appointed captain in the 5th Virginia Regiment, then on 17 December 1777, he was appointed lieutenant colonel in the 1st Virginia Infantry. After the war, he moved from Lancaster County to Stafford County, Virginia, and built Traveler's Rest. By 1793, he had relocated to Loudoun County, Virginia. Ball married first Mary Chichester (1753-1775) 1 July 1770, and they had two children including Burgess Ball (1773-1793). He married second Frances Thornton Washington (1763-1815), a niece of George Washington, 7 April 1781, and they had eight children.

!Burges Ball of "Travellers' Rest", Spotsylvania Co., and of "Spring- wood", Loudon, born July 28, 1749, died March 7, 1800; captain in 5th Virginia Regiment, Continental line; taken prisoner at Charleston in 1780. In 1776, he raised, clothes and equipped at his own charge a regiment for the Continental service, married Mary, daughter of John Chichester, 2nd, Frances, daughter of Col. Charles Washington. Captain Ball owned valuable iron works and furnished supplies that wereof great service during the Revolution. (see-Hayden's VirginiaGenealogies and Traditions, also Heitmans U.S. Military Record). CaptainBall also gave much material and financial assistance toward the expenseof the war and rendered great service toward establishing Americanindependence. He was a second cousin of General Washington and served onhis staff. His father, William Ball, being a first cousin ofWashington's mother, Mary Ball.

!1770: Edge Hill was described in 1934 as set on a hill overlooking Lancaster Creek and the lowlands beyond, back from the Rappahannock. A large brick mansion, it was the seat of a large estate, a home of the Chinn family. The estate, part of a Chinn grant was inherited by John Chinn, a grandson of Rawleigh and Esther Ball Chinn who, about 1770, built the mansion. His son John Yates Chinn graduated in Medicine at St. George and St. Thomas Hospital, London England. Upon his return to Virginia married Sally (Sarah Fairfax) Carter one of the several daughters of Councilor Robert Carter of Nomini hall. Once there were terraced gardens. It had a facade one hundred fifty feet across. Guidebook of the Northern Neck by R. Ragland Eubank in 1934. It was located far up on Lancaster Creek, near a road that turns left at Fairplay, off the Simonson Road. Nothing is left of the mansion but an outlline of the foundation.
