He was first married to Susan Jordan who probably died before 1630. Nathaniel and Susannah immigrated to America 1633 or '34. (This date has been revised since a daughter was baptized in England in 1638. It seems Nathaniel came in 1633/4 and returned to England, coming back in 1638 with his family.

Settled, Newbury, Mass. 1638-9. The newly found records show that Nathaniel Merrill's daughter, Susanna, was not baptised until Dec 12, 1638 in Lawford, Essex, Co., England. This tells us that Nathaniel had not left for America with his family until late December 1638 or early 1639. In 1638 the English Government started restricting its citizens from freely immigrating to the new continent with its abundance of land for all, something unknown in England. Nathaniel(1) Merrill was one of the earliest settlers in Newbury, MA in 1639. He was the ancestor of the vast majority of those who now bear the Merrill name in this country: it is believed, indeed, that less than one percent of the Merrill's in America can trace their pedigree to any other emigrant ancestor.
Nathaniel Merrill and his older brother John were born in England. The registers of Wherstead, a parish lying three miles south if Ipswich, in Suffolk County, England, contain the following entries:
1599, August 16. John Merrell son of Nath! Merrell & Mary his wife was baptised.
1601, May 4. Nathanaell Merrell son of Nath! Merrell & his wife Mary was baptised.
There are reasons for believing that these entries are the record of baptism of John and Nathaniel Merrill of Newbury.
It is supposed that Nathaniel Merrill was married before leaving England. No record is found of his marriage in America. If the marriage took place here it was probably at Ipswich, in the short time before the settlement in Newbury. His wife's name was Susanna. Savage, in the "genealogical Dictionary of New England" (published in 1861), says that Nathaniel Merrill married Susanna Jordan. In this he was no doubt following Coffin's "History of Newbury" (published in 1845), and the statement has been frequently copied. Ed note, Nathaniel Merrill did marry Stephen Jorden after Nathaniel's death in 1655.
Nathaniel was probably a farmer and is ancestor to all the Merrill's in the U.S.A. His brother John and wife had a daughter but no sons.

From A Merrill Memorial - His will was dated 8 March, 1654/5, and was probated 27 March 1655. It is not to be assumed from the fact that the testator signed with his mark that he had not learned to write. He lay on his death bed, and died eit days after executing the instrument. John Merrill, his brother, signed the will as a witness, and there is no reason to doubt that Nathaniel had enjoyed equal advantages of schooling.

Nathaniel(2) Merrill (Nathaniel(1)) spent his life in Newbury MA, but whether he was born in England, or in America after his father's migration, is not known. He died 1 jan 1682/83. In a "List of their names who have taken the oath of Allegiance at Newberry, 1678," (vol 30, p.56) his age is recorded as 40 years, while the age of his brother Abraham is given as 41 years. It is believed, however, that Nathaniel was the oldest of the children, a belief based on the fact that he was named as executor of his father's will, and was therefore probabley of age in March, 1655.

Residence:
John(2) Merrill (Nathaniel(1) one of the older sons of Nathaniel went to Hartford, CT before 1657, while still a minor and it is said was adopted by Gregory Wolterton. Savage, in his "Genealogical Dictionary" said that Gregory Wolterton "had good estate, large tan works, and no children." Gregory Wolterton made his will 17 Jul 1674, and died soon after, leaving legacies to a number of persons, including relatives in Ipswich, England. Savage adds: "Most of his estate was given to John Merrills, because he hand adopted him." The same statement of adoption is repeated in the "Memorial History of Hartford County."

These facts lend plausibility to the theory that Gregory Wolterton was a brother of Susanna Merrill. It was a long journey from Newbury to Hartford; means of communication were meagre, and both communities were in their infancy. It seems unlikely that John, as a very young man, would have made such a journey, seperating himself from a lifetime from home and kin, unless to make a home with other kin in the place where he went to live.

Nathaniel Miller, a founder of Brimfield, Mass.
Nathaniel Miller was one of seven children born to Lazarus Miller and Mary Burbank Miller. He was born in Springfield, Mass., Dec. 6, 1693, and at the age of 38 was one of about 100 persons who received grants of land in a new township in Hampden County, which became Brimfield, a picturesque village which is midway between Springfield and Boston. His initial grant, in 1731, was for 120 acres. His land is located two miles up what is now Warren Road from the Highway 20 junction. Warren is a twisty road that goes up what is now Tower Hill. An early map in the Brimfield library spots the site.

Nathaniel was evidently well-regarded and educated as he held important township posts until his death Feb. 2, 1743-44, at the age of 50 or 51. He served as Selectman in the years 1739, 1740 and 1743 and as Assessor for six years.

He married Rebekah Prichet, or Pritchard, Nov. 10, 1716. She was born Dec. 5, 1696 in Suffield, Conn., to William Prichard (born 1656 in Ipswich, Mass., to William Prichard of Wales, England, and Hannah) and Rebecca Taylor). Rebekah and Nathaniel had 11 children

The following information regarding Rebecca Sherman and her family is taken from the Lorraine Barrow Silva Collection of the Wallisville Heritage Park Foundation. This particular item can be found under "Chambers County History Notebook." It follows as such:
"REBECCA SHERMAN, with her children came to Texas some time between 1850 and 1854. She and her husband, Jacob H. Sherman, were moving to Texas from Missouri when he died along the way, November 18, 1850. She was the mother of quite a large family. She stopped in another county evidently before coming to Chambers County. They moved in an ox wagon and when they reached here, they settled in the community now known as Eminence, as it was near the water and afforded transportion for buying and selling. Her family is still well represented in the county. Her sons were as follows: William S. Sherman, Leverett Sherman, Jacob Sherman, Jr., John T. Sherman, Lothrop B., and Richard H. Sherman."

Rebecca had the unique experience of trveling across America in a covered wagon with her family. As a young child she lived in New York, as a young girl she lived in Ohio, and as a young woman she lived in Iowa. Iowa was where she married William "Willis" Barnes on Jan 12, 1840, and bore her first child. Her second child was born in Illinois, and the next two were in Missouri. Rebecca was pregnant with her fifth child when they traveled to Texas. On 29 Nov 1855 William purchased 15 acres of land from her brother Leverett. William built a home for Rebecca, the children, and widowed mother, Rebecca.

Notes:

On 27 Oct 1855 Jacob purchased the first of his land in present-day Chambers Co. On30 Apr 1860 he purchased 3/4 of an acre in the town of Wallisville, on the east fork of the Trinity River, for $125. On 19 Jul 1863 he paid $250 for land also in Wallisville.
On 8 Aug 1863 Jacob left Sarah and children and enlisted in Captain Thomas A Wooten's Company B of the Texas State Troops Cavalry. He was 43 years old at the time and entered the company as a private. Records in the Texas State Library inde he was stationed at Camp Wood near Liberty five days after his enlistment.
He returned safely home from the war and began to expand his land holdings. In addition to purchasing land, he built and owned one of the two cotton gins in Wallisville, ginning cotton in 400-pound bales. It would then be shipped to Galvn to be sold. Disaster struck Jacob on 17 Sep 1875 when a hurricane devastated Wallisville. The cotton gin survived, although the lint room, engine room, and the lower part of the gin were all carried away. Other buildings, outhouses, and family furniture were also lost. His home was severely damaged, but survived. Jacob appears to have rebuilt the gin because the note for a new Tanney screw press for packing cotton was paid off 14 Oct 1876.
In the 1864 election year Jacob Hamilton Sherman won the position of county treasurer.

Civil War - Enlisted on August 7, 1863 in Captain Thomas A. Wooten's Company B of the Texas State Troops Cavalry. He was 40 years old at the time, entering the company as a private. Records in the Texas State Library indicate that he was stationed at Camp Wood near Liberty five days after his enlistment.
1870 census showed real and personal property valued at $10,500. "The most obvious documentary evidence of the impact of the Reconstruction can be found in the census and tax records kept both befoe and after the war. Most property holders suered. With much of their material wealth tied up in newly enfranchised slaves, such a downturn in personal wealth is hardly surprising."

Notes:

There have been many variations of his middle name,Brookway, Blockman, several other spellings. In reserching various Shermans/Stebbins for Richard's family, there was a collateral family named Brockway. I'm betting this was the source of his name. There was also a Lothrop family marrying into the Brockway family - in fact, there was a Lathrop Brockway. This is same Lothrop/Lathrop family of Jane Lothrop who married Samuel Fuller whose daughter married Nicholas Bonham, who we believe is our Catharine Bonham Madden's ancestor. It may turn out we're doubly related to Samuel Fuller if we could find Richard Sherman's exact connection.

August 1855. Mary was born 18 October 1835 in Tennessee and died 30 September 1889 in Chambers County, Texas. She is buried in the Eminence Cemetery. She was the daughter of John and Susan (Shelton) Kirk, and the widow of (?) Fairas, possibly P. J. Fairas who died 29 July 1851. Lothrop and Mary's daughter Amanda Petronella Sherman was born 15 October 1863 in Chambers County and died 14 December 1918 in Beaumont. She married Andrew Prather Jones on 16 November 1882 in Chambers County. He died on 9 June 1929 in Beaumont. Both are buried in the Magnolia Cemetery in Beaumont. Andrew was the son of Mabra Madden and Sarah (Lovelady) Jones.

"Jacob Haven Sherman Sr.'s seventh child was Lothrop Blookway Sherman. Lothrop arrived in present day Chambers County in 1854 and married Mary in 1855. Since she was a widow, she had separate funds. On 28 October 1856, Mary paid $30 for the purchase of 1/4 of a league of the Shadrack Burney survey from Tabitha Jane Shelton Jones. This became their home place. By 1860, Lothrop had cleared and improved 131 acres, with 93 acres left to clear. That year it was reported he owned one horse, one mule, one milk cow, eight working oxen, twenty cows, five sheep and twenty head of swine. He harvested one hundred and fifty bushel of Indian corn, eleven bales of cotton, fifty pounds of wool, three hundred bushels of sweet potatoes, and three hundred gallons of wine. After farming their homestead for seven years, Lothrop heard the patriotic call of the Civil War at the age of 38. He left Mary, who was seven months pregnant (with Amanda) and their three small children, and enlisted on 7 August 1863 in Captain Thomas A. Wooten's Company B, Texas State Troops Cavalry. He entered the company as a private. Lothrop returned safely home from the war to once again farm his land and to live another twenty-five years with his loving supportive wife."

Name:
Name: Lothrop -- apparently named for the Lothrop family who married into the Fuller family -- i.e. Mayflower descendants.

Brockway -- seen many spellings of this name - Blockway, Brookway, Blookway -- and others. Blockway is a family name that married into the Stebbins line beginning back 4 generations from Rebecca, a Bridget Blockway. Quite reasonably the source of the name.

Sarah Jane Bail wa a schoolteacher. For a time before her marriage she taught school in Chardon, Ohio, where her employer was James A Garfield, later to become President of the United States. After she married George Washington Sober, she moved to Michigan, and for a while taught at the one room Landon School in Laketownship, Berrien Co, Michigan. Her children were among her students.
