He apparently "came to Virginia in 1645. He was a man of prominence; he and his sons holding high state and church offices in the Colony. He owned large tracts of land, including one of 6,500 acres which he patented jointly with Major Lawrence Smith. His children and grand-children were related by blood and marriage to the first families of Virginia; their names being mentioned in 'The Genuine Aristoc of Virginia' and in The Richmond Critic as 'The First Families of Virginia.' Robert Taliaferro was married to Sarah Grymes, daughter of Rev. Charles Grymes, of 'Brandon,' then of Gloucester County, now of Middlesex County. Robert Taliaferro and Maj. Lawrence Smith, being great friends and intimately associated in business, were drawn closer together by the intermarriage of their children, John Taliaferro and Sarah Smith. The terms of the Treaty of Yorktown were arranged in the Moore House which, at one time, belonged to Maj. Lawrence Smith, and at this time was owned and occupied by his great-granddaughter, Lucy, the wife of Col. Augustine Moore. Nicholoas Taliaferro, the great-great-grandson of Major Lawrence Smith, was present when the treaty was made. This estate is now known as 'Temple Farm.' [citations omitted.]"

    Notes:

The TALIAFERRO Family in Legend and History.
The TALIAFERRO family has since near the beginning of the history of the Virginia Colony been an influential and cultured family. The name is pronounced as though it were spelled "TOLIVER."
The legend as to the beginning of the family name is that Julius CAESAR, while inspecting the Roman military camp at Gaul at twilight, was surrounded by hostile Gaelic warriors. CAESAR's bravery caused the leader of the band to spare his life. In the course of time that leader, himself a captive of CAESAR, was freed and made a personal attendant of CARSAR. Although Romans only were permitted to bear arms, an exception was made for that Gaelic leader, and he became known by the latin names of "telum" or dart, and "ferro" which means "to bear."
[NOTE] The family has been prominant for many years; the favorite wife of King John of ENG was Isabel, daughter of County Aymer de TAILLEFER, the swordsmith. And to get to the ancestry we can trace, we have to move forward only about three hundred years.

note: this Richard and Rose Berryman seem to be misplaced as another record shows Richard (son of Francis) as the only child of Zachariah; but contains the same bio.

    Zachariah TALIAFERRO.
Little is known about this ancestor, Zachariah TALIAFERRO, the second son of Francis TALIAFERRO and Elizabeth CATLETT. He had a son, Richard TALIAFERRO, who married Rose BERRYMAN and who is the subject of the following section (I). Richard was evidently an only son, probably an only child. Zachariah died in 1726.

Because of the lack of information, this Zachariah and his cousin of the same name, (the son of Francis' brother, John TALIAFERRO) have been often confused by genealogists. Proof that this is the right one follows:

Col. John TALIAFERRO in his will (1715-1720), devised to sons Robert and Zachariah 675 acres each, in Golden Vale Swamp, Essex County. The will of Zachariah, the son of John, dated 1721-2 and probated 1745, bequeaths to brothers Richard and William "675 acres of land being a moiety of a dividend of land lying in Essex Co, parish of St. Marys, on the Golden Vale Swamp." The remainder of his estate he devised to his "two cousins, Kemp TALIAFERRO and Mildred TALIAFERRO, "as they shall arrive at age of 16 years". The "cousins" were the children of his brother, Charles and his wife Ann KEMP. It is of course apparent that the man who made this will was a bachelor, or possibly a widower, who died without being survived by children. The other Zachariah, son of Francis, or his son Richard or both patented lands in Amherst which descended through the sons of Richard and Rose BERRYMAN TALIAFERRO.

  1. 39.  Capt. Richard Taliaferro Descendancy chart to this point (16.Zachariah3, 3.Francis2, 1.Robert1) was born in 1706 in "the Mount," Virginia; died on 27 Sep 1748.

    Notes:

Capt. Richard TALIAFERRO and wife Rose BERRYMAN.

Capt. Richard TALIAFERRO was born at "the Mount", Virginia, in 1706, the son of Zachariah TALIAFERRO. He married Rose BERRYMAN, June 10, 1726, in Caroline County, Virginia.

One of the resources I've found most frustrating (for reasons explained in Chapter XI) but also most endearing gives the following biography of the family:

Rose BERRYMAN was born in the historic County of Westmoreland, Virginia, probably in the year 1708. She came of distinguished ancestry, her father, Major Benjamin BERRYMAN, being a man of prominence in the Colony....

Rose BERRYMAN was one among a family of seventeen children, and she spent her girlhood days on the BERRYMAN estate in Westmoreland County. On June 10, 1726, she was united in marriage to Captain Richard TALIAFERRO of Caroline County. Their home was blest with thirteen children, one of whom died in infancy. This family resided in Caroline County and probably belonged to St. Thomas' Parish, the records of which have been destroyed. Captain Richard TALIAFERRO was a large landholder and patented 10,000 acres in the present counties of Amherst and Nelson. He passed away on September 27, 1748. The cause of his death is unknown; although traditional accounts in the family of his granddaughter, Anna TALIAFERRO McCRARY state that he was killed while crossing the Potomac on a flatboat, and only a few of his men escaped death.

The sad loss of her husband left Rose BERRYMAN TALIAFERRO with entire responsibility of her home and the rearing of twelve children. She reared and educated them according to the standards of the old Virginia Colony; breathing into their lives love in its truest form; love for one another; love for their fellowman; love for their country; and love for their God. Several of her sons and grandsons served with honor and distinction in the Revolution; one son, Dr. John TALIAFERRO, being not only a soldier, but a prominent physician and a Baptist Minister. In her declining years she could have pointed to these boys with pride and said, 'These are my Jewels.' Her parents could not have chosen a more fitting name for her than Rose. In the garden of life she lived and grew and bloomed, not for herself, but for the pleasure of others.... Though she sleeps today in an unmarked grave, she is not forgotten...

    Notes:

In 1785, William Bell, in the State Enumerations, listed Mildred James as the head of a family, with three white souls, one dwelling and two other buildings. (Heads of family, Virginia., 1790).
She appears on the Orange County personal property returns for 1783, charged with one tithable, three houses, six cattle, and her slave being exempt. She petitioned the General Assembly for the arrears due on the pension her late son, Catlett, soldier of the Revolutionary War. An Act passed, December 15, 1791, directed same to be paid. (Hening, Vol. 13, pg 322).

Her will dated October 29, 1801, was probated April 25, 1803. Jos. Atkins, her son-in-law was executor, with Spencer Atkins his security. She mentions her daughter, Betty Smith, son James, graddaughter, Milly James, and leaves her land to Milly Atkins, "her equal part with her brothers." Her sons, Catlett and Stephen had died during her lifetime. She does not mention John, who is thought also to have died during her lifetime. (Orange Co. Will bk. 4, pg 74).

    Virginia" by: Marshall Wingfield.

**Although Wingfield states that son John was thought to have died during her lifetime, documents show that this is incorrect. John is shown in on a document (a land transaction) dated 1804, along with his siblings, James, Spencer, Elizabeth and Mildred and their spouses selling 12 acres of property in Orange County, Virginia, owned by his mother. **Source: Dorles Repass

TALIAFERRO, THOMAS DORSEY (1831?1909). Thomas Dorsey (sometimes called Darcy) Taliaferro, lawyer and Confederate officer, was born in Upperville, Fauquier County, Virginia, on September 10, 1831, to Dr. William Thomas Warren Taliaferro and Frances Barnes Harrison. His paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Bankhead Buckner, was the niece of President James Monroe. On August 2, 1849, Taliaferro enrolled at Virginia Military Institute. The following year, he withdrew from the school to study law under Judge Whitfield, an eminent jurist in Smithfield, Virginia. Between 1852 and 1853 he continued his study of law at the University of Virginia. In 1854 Taliaferro married Eliza Lewis Madison, a grand niece of President James Madison. The couple had five sons and seven daughters. In 1858 Taliaferro brought his family to Palestine, Texas, and later bought a farm to the west, in Johnson County, where he was a stock raiser.
On July 7, 1861, Taliaferro enlisted for service in the Confederacy. On July 7, 1862, he was elected lieutenant colonel of the Twentieth Texas Cavalry (Bass's) Regiment, mustering in Hill County, Texas. During the war the unit served in Southern Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas, and Taliaferro acted as commanding officer at Fort Washita in 1863 and Post Boggy Depot, Indian Country, in 1865.
After the war, Taliaferro moved to Caddo Parish, Louisiana, for four years to raise cotton. In 1870 he and his family returned to Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas, and, in addition to practicing law, worked as a cotton planter, farmer, and stock raiser. In 1886, he moved to the Chickasaw Indian Nation, where he founded the town of Madill, Oklahoma, with his sons William Norborne and Dorsey Buckner. Taliaferro died on March 4, 1909, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Zack Dobson, in Durant, Oklahoma, and is buried at Woodberry Forest Cemetery in Madill. His interment was conducted by the Masons, of which he was a member for almost fifty years.
