Notes: Revolutionary War Militia Officer, Frontiersman. Early figure in establishing Kentucky settlements; In July 1776 helped rescue three young girls kidnapped by Indians from Boonesborough, Virginia (later Kentucky) in group led by Daniel Boone. Commanded militia regiment for George Rogers Clark against British allied Indians in Ohio in the summer of 1780. Killed in ambush by Indians. Son John Floyd and grandson John both became governors of Virginia. James married Matilda Burford in 1768 in Virginia. Matilda was born about 1750; died in 1769 in Virginia. 3. | Gov John Floyd ![]() Notes: S Congressman, Virginia Governor. Served in the War of 1812 as a Major and surgeon in the Virginia Militia. Elected to represent two different Virginia Districts in the United States House of Representatives (5th District from 1817 to 1821, 20th District from 1821 to 1829) serving from 1817 to 1829. Served as Governor of Virginia from 1830 to 1834. In 1832 he ran for President, receiving 11 Electoral Votes, and carrying the state of South Carolina. His father was Revolutionary War Militia officer and Frontiersman John Floyd, and his son was Virginia Governor and Civil War Confederate General John Buchanan Floyd. 4. | Gov/Maj Gen John Buchanan Floyd ![]() Notes: Civil War Confederate Major General, Virginia Governor, US Cabinet Member. He was a State Legislature in 1848, when elected as the Democratic Governor of Virginia, serving until 1852. in 1853 he was again elected to the legislature and in 1857, President James Buchanan appointed him Secretary of War. After the secession of the South in 1861, he resigned his cabinet post, joined the Confederate Army and was commissioned Brigadier General. In command of a brigade he participated in the battle at Gauley Bridge and fought with General Lee's Army in the Virginia Campaign. In January 1862, he was dispatched with the Central Army of Kentucky, to command a division in the defense of Fort Donelson Tennessee, which was lost to Federal troops in February. After the surrender of Fort Donelson, President Jefferson Davis removed him from field command in March 1862. In August 1862, he was appointed Major General in command of the Provisional Army of Virginia, but his health soon failed and he died a year later. John married Sarah "Sallie" Preston about 1826. Sarah (daughter of General Francis Smith Preston and Sarah Buchanan Campbell) was born on 19 Nov 1802; died on 8 May 1879 in Washington Co, Virginia; was buried in Sinking Spring Cem, Washington Co, Virginia.
