The premise of the HOWARD-ARUNDELL theory is that Matthew HOWARD of Virgina is identical to Matthew, baptized 19 June 1609 at St. Andrew's, Holborn, Middlesex, England, son of Thomas ARUNDELL, 1st Baron Arundel of Wardour.
Thomas ARUNDELL was married to Ann PHILIPSON, the widow THOROUGHGOOD/THURGOOD.

Thomas ARUNDELL was the son of Matthew ARUNDELL, and grandson of Sir Thomas ARUNDELL and wife Margaret HOWARD. Sir Thomas ARUNDELL was beheaded by King Henry VIII. Another premise of the theory was that both the elder Matthew and his son Thomas, later 1st Baron of Wardour due to embarrassment used the HOWARD name of their mother/grandmother while on the European continent.
Appearing in print as early as 1919, the theory has little foundation.

The burial record of that Matthew was recorded at St. Andrew's Holborn, Middlesex, England as: "Matthew ARUNDELL, son of Thomas Lo: ARUNDELL out of Castill Yard in holborne was buried in the Chancell under the Table the 2 June 1620." The burial record alone is enough to invalidate the HOWARD-ARUNDELL theory, but there are also other flaws in the theory. No one has ever supplied evidence that the elder Matthew ARUNDELL or his son Thomas, 1st Baron of Wardour ever used the HOWARD surname. There is also evidence that this is not true. Thomas ARUNDELL had gone to Europe with an introductory letter from Queen Elizabeth, in which she referred to him as her "dearest cousin Thomas Arundel." While there, due to bravery in battle, the Emporer of Germany gave him as Thomas ARUNDEL the title of "Count of the Empire."

It is interesting also that some have cited the above book by YEATMAN as showing how Thomas ARUNDELL went to Europe, changed his name to HOWARD, and had a son Matthew who faked his death and went to Virginia. The book contains no such statements.

YEATMAN does contain statements regarding Thomas ARUNDEL receiving from Emperor Rudolf the title of Count of the Holy Roman Empire. Through improper citations, some researchers have made it appear that the whole theory is listed in YEATMAN. As listed above YEATMAN does quote from letters
of Queen Elizabeth introducing Thomas ARUNDEL to Emperor Rudolph. That also would invalidate parts of the theory that Thomas was operating in Europe incognito under the HOWARD name.

Thomas Arundell of Wardour was born into an ancient Anglo-Norman family. He spent his early life on the Continent, especially in Germany. At an early age, with the consent of Queen Elizabeth and with her letters of recommendation to the Emperor, he went as a volunteer in the Imperial Army to fight the Turks. For his conspicuous gallantry in those wars, he earned the soubriquet "The Valiant." In 1595 at the battle of Gran in Hungary he captured the standard of the Turk's with his own hands. The Emperor, Rudolph II, thereupon created him a COUNT OF THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE, a unique and remarkable Imperial Decree 14th of Dec 1595, made the honour "descendible to all and each of the grantee's children, heirs, posterity, and descendants of either sex, born or to be born, forever."
Under the terms of this unique document anyone legally descended from Thomas Arundell is a Count or Countess of the Holy Roman Empire.
The Emporor's edict commended Count Arundell to Queen Elizabeth who reacted furiously to the matter and refused to recognise the title remarking, "I would not have my sheep branded with another man's mark; I would not have them follow the whe of a strange shepherd." On his return to England Count Arundell was thrown into the Fleet prison for two months and banished from court. Count Thomas, spent his early life on the Continent, especially in Germany and served in the Imperial Hungarian Army against the Turks. He was created by Rodolph II, Emporer of Germany, a Count of the Holy Roman Empire. The patent of creation, dated Prague, December 14, 1595, conferred the honor upon "you Thomas and all and every one of your children, heirs and legitimate descendants of both sexes already born or that ever hereafter shall be". Thus the warrant conferred the title not only on the eldest son but on every son and daughter and their descendants.

Life

Sir Thomas Arundell (ca. 1560 ? 7 November 1639) was the eldest son of Sir Matthew Arundell of Wardour Castle in Wiltshire (ca. 1532/34?24 December 1598), a member of the ancient family of Arundell of Cornwall, and Margaret Willoughby, the daughter of Sir Henry Willoughby, of Wollaton, Nottinghamshire. His father inherited extensive former monastic lands, and served in a number of administrative capacities, including high sheriff, custos rotulorum, and Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset. In her youth his mother served for several years in the household of Princess Elizabeth at Hatfield.[1] Arundell's paternal grandparents were Sir Thomas Arundell (executed on 26 February 1552) and Margaret Howard (ca. 1515-10 October 1571), sister of Queen Catherine Howard.[2]

In 1580 Arundell was imprisoned for his fervent Roman Catholicism.[3] By licence dated 18 June 1585 he married Mary (c.1567?1607), the daughter of Henry Wriothesley, 2nd Earl of Southampton, and Mary, the daughter of Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montague.[4] Arundell's wife was the sister of Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton. Arundell was fond of Southampton as a youth, writing to Lord Burghley when Southampton was 15 that 'Your Lordship doth love him', and that 'My [own] love and care of this young Earl enticeth me'.[5]

Although a Roman Catholic throughout his life, Arundell demonstrated his loyalty to the Crown in 1588 by subscribing £100 towards the defeat of the Spanish Armada.[6]

According to Akrigg, Arundell was 'gifted and scholarly', but by the time he had reached his 30s had failed to find any outlet for his talents and had 'sunk into a melancholic existence', living a 'studious solitary life' at the Wriothesley estates in Hampshire or in the family apartments at Southampton House in London. In 1595 Arundell's father agreed to provide him with horses and £1100 to leave England and serve in the Imperial forces against the Turks.[7] The Queen allegedly recommended him to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II.[8] On 7 September 1595 Arundell stormed the breach at Gran, replacing the Turkish standard with the Imperial eagle.[9] In recognition of his service, Arundell was made a Count of the Holy Roman Empire on 14 December 1595, and became known as 'the Valiant'.[10]

Against his father's wishes Arundell took his leave of the Imperial court in mid-December and returned to England. His ship was caught in a storm and wrecked near Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast. He lost all his belongings in the wreck, and counted himself fortunate to stand 'extreamely cold & wett upon the shore'.[11] His assumption of a foreign title created jealousy among his fellow peers in England, and was resented by his father, who objected to his superior rank and disinherited him.[citation needed] The Queen was furious, and threatened to make him renounce the title. She committed Arundell to the Fleet, remarking that ?I would not have a sheep branded with another man's mark?.[12] Arundell remained under arrest till mid-April 1597, when he was freed, but forbidden to appear at court. In the following months he made frequent appeals to the Queen, but was still denied her favour, and again fell prey to depression. In July his father grudgingly allowed Arundell to live with him at Wardour provided that he not bring his wife with him.[13]

In 1597 Arundell was arrested on vague suspicions of Catholic espionage. The authorities searched his chamber but could prove nothing against him, and released him to his father's custody on the grounds of his wife's failing health. Arundell's father 'insisted on behaving as a jailer', and Arundell was eventually transferred elsewhere.[14]

Arundell succeeded his father in December 1598. In 1601, his brother-in-law, Southampton, was on trial for his part in the Essex Rebellion of 8 February 1601. Attempting to distance himself from Southampton's misfortune, Arundell wrote a 'treacherous' letter on 18 February to Sir Robert Cecil, protesting that Southampton's 'ears were hardened against wholesome counsel, for which I thought good to estrange myself from him'.[15]

In March 1605 Arundell and Southampton sent Captain George Weymouth to found a colony in Virginia. The colonists arrived back in England in mid-July. According to the account written by James Rosier, these were the colonists 'we were to leave in the Country by their agreement with my Lord the Right Honourable Count Arundell'. According to Akrigg, Arundell figures much more prominently in Rosier's account than Southampton, leading Akrigg to conclude that 'the whole voyage may best be regarded as a first attempt to found an American colony that would be an asylum for English Catholics', and that Arundell, who in 1596 had planned a venture to the East Indies, was the principal impetus behind the Weymouth voyage.[16]

On 4 May 1605 King James I created him Baron Arundell of Wardour.[17] Appointed by the new King as colonel of the English regiment serving the Archduke in Spanish Flanders,[18] Arundell made an unauthorized crossing to the continent in September 1605, disobeying royal orders and incurring the King's anger.[19] A few months later he was named by Guy Fawkes under torture, and briefly suspected of complicity in the Gunpowder Plot.[20]

In 1607 Arundell's eldest son and heir, Thomas, married Blanche Somerset, the daughter of the Earl of Worcester, without Arundell's consent, resulting in an estrangement between father and son. Arundell's first wife, Mary, died a few weeks after the marriage.[21] On 1 July 1608 Arundell remarried. His second wife was Anne Philipson, the daughter of Miles Philipson, of Crook, Westmorland, and Barbara Sandys, sister of Francis Sandys, of Conishead, Lancashire. She died on 28 June 1637 at Lennox House in London, and was buried on 4 July 1637 at Tisbury, Wiltshire.[22]

During the 1630s Arundell engaged in 'acrimonious religious disputes' with the Bishop of Durham, and in 1637 attempted to sell Wardour Castle to the King.[23] He died at Wardour on 7 November 1639, and was buried at Tisbury.[24]

Notes:

The English background of Mathew Howard of the Severn in Maryland has been the subject of much interest and not a little controversy as to the origin. That he was of the noble family of England cannot be denied, for, according to the ancient rules of heraldry, any family which has been granted a coat-of-arms is deemed to be ennobled.

Many visible and invisible indicators point to the belief that he was not of too remote relationship to the Howards of the Peerage, but certainly no title or even a knighthood was possessed by him. But the use of the ancient Howard arms on documents in Maryland and the fact that all of his sons were literate place his family in the social picture above many of the British planters who settled in the Colonies.

The date of his settlement in America and the political times at home all have some bearing on his life and the motive for his leaving England. His politics were of the Puritan variety. They may have alienated him from the conservative opinions of other members of the family?though many peers espoused the liberality and revolutionary actions of Cromwell and his adherents. His associations in Virginia were definitely with the liberal non-Conformists which was the reason of his leaving that colony and coming to Maryland at the invitation of Lord Baltimore. He was among the first contingency to arrive and settled on the north shore of the Severn opposite the present town of Annapolis around present Greenbury Point more or less under the ancient rights of squatters until patents were granted after certain formalities.

The first record of Mathew Howard being in the Colony of Virginia was on February 8, 1637/8, when he was seated on the western branch of the Elizabeth River in the Upper County of New Norfolk. His emigration therefore ante-dates that year, but it is not believed to have been too many years.

Throwing aside any political entanglement of Mathew Howard in England, his desire to settle in the Colonies may have been actuated by sheer adventure and the opportunities which a new world offered to younger sons without estates. There is no record of his bringing in children, but only his wife, Anne, and two man-servants. Consequently, it can be assumed that he had recently married and set out for Virginia shortly thereafter.

He seemed to have left all connections behind him, and when he settled in Maryland neither he nor his sons commemorated any of his ancestral estates by the naming of their plantations to offer a clue to their life in England.

As mentioned previously, he was seated on the western branch of the Elizabeth River in Upper Norfolk which is present Nansemond County, where a hot-bed of non-Conformists had developed through mutual interests. It was not until May 27, 1638, that he applied for his head-rights in financing his own passage and that of Anne his wife.

He had a family by July 6, 1640, as the following human interest item will prove: "Simon Peeter, aged 26, stated that Edy Hanking said that Mathew Howard's wife went walking with Edward Lloide and left the children crying and her husband had to leave work and quiet the children? Eady Hanking shall acknowledge the accusations and as Howard's wife openly forgiveness both at the house of Mr. Wm Julian on Friday next and also at the Parish Church the Sunday following and defray the charges of the Court."

By 1648 Mathew Howard was the father of six children. Richard Hall, of Lower Norfolk County, died testate in 1648 without issue and named Mathew Howard the Elder as Executor of his estate and bequeathed legacies to the Howard children. He furthermore left "Old Mathew" one yearling stear calf and "my best pair of breeches."

On July 3, 1650, Robert Clark, Surveyor General of the Province, stated that he had "laid out for Mathew Howard of the Severn in the County of Ann Arundell planter a parcel of land lying on the south side of the River Severn near a Creek called Marshes Creek... containing and now laid out in the whole for Six Hundred and fifty acres more or less." The 650 acres were undoubtedly due for his own personal adventure into the Province (100 acres) and the remainder for the transportation at his own expense eleven persons whose names were not recorded. His younger children were certainly under age at that time, so it can be assumed that among the eleven were several of his children.

He perhaps returned to Virginia or his son and namesake remained behind, for on November 15, 1650, the Court of Lower Norfolk ordered that 100 lbs of tobacco be paid to Mathew Howard for the killing of a wolf. It is also evident that he was a resident of Virginia as late as 1652. Lt. Coll. Cornelius Loyd in that year was appointed the Collector of the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River for 97 tithable persons with a quota of 31,330 lbs. tobacco. His remuneration was to be 4, 150 lbs. tobacco and Mathew Howard was to receive 100 lbs. tobacco. In that same year Robert Woody was ordered to pay Mathew Howard 500 lbs. tobacco.

No record can be found of any last will and testament or even an inventory or administration of his estate. He was deceased by 1659, when Edward Loyd who was the guardian of his youngest son, Philip, had "Howardstone" on the Severn surveyed for Philip Howard, stating that he was an orphan of Mathew Howard. It was not until 1660 or a little later that his sons appeared in the service and annals of the Province.

The records of Oxford and Cambridge do not reveal that any of the sons of Mathew Howard were sent back to England for their education, but all were literate and manifested a high degree of intellect. It is therefore apparent that they were tutored in Virginia and that the younger ones were later schooled after settlement in Maryland. The family left its mark on Maryland and the scions intermarried with the county gentry of the Province. They were large land and slave owners which were symbols of wealth and position in those days. While the emigrant was undoubtedly of Puritan learnings, the sons conformed to the Established Church and even became members of the local vestries.

Matthew Howard, b. 1609.
Matthew Howard emigrant son of Sir Thomas Howard-Arundel and Ann Philipson his wife. He married Ann about 1630 and embarked within a short time for Virginia with two white servants. Most likely political differences or adventure sent him and his bride to the New World. It must be remembered that he was not the eldest son and therefore the title would not descend to him on the death of his father. At that time it was not uncommon for the second and younger sons of baronial houses to immigrate to Virginia with a retinue of servants and continue a life of culture, ease and wealth which could be found unequalled in the New World.
The vessel in which Matthew Howard sailed from his native land brought him with his bride to the settlements at the mouth of the James and Elizabeth Rivers and there he joined the group of settlers in what was then known as Lower Norfolk County. He resided for nearly twenty years in that locale and it is believed that is where his eight children were born.
In 1638 Matthew was granted by Charles I 150 acres of land, his rights by his own immigration and the transportation of his wife, Anne, and two servants. Inasmuch as he demanded no land for transportation of his children, it is conclusive proof that all eight children were born in the new world.
He was among the first contingency to arrive and settled on the north shore of the Severn opposite the present town of Annapolis around present Greensbury Point. On July 3, 1650, Robert Clark, Surveyor General of the Province, stated that he had "laid out for Mathew Howard of the Severn in the County of Anne Arundell planter a parcell of land lying on the south side of the River Severn near a Creek called Marshes Creek... containing and now laid out in the wholf for 650 acres more or less."
What caused Matthew and his family to leave the Tidewater Country of Virginia and seek a home in Maryland is not known-only supposition. When he landed in Virginia, Maryland the proprietory province of the Calverts had not been established. It is not unlikely that he wished to reside in the Province of his brother-in-law, Cecil Calvert, Second Lord Baltimore. Again the fact that the county of Anne Arundel was named after his sister perhaps lured him. The tales of beauty and richness of Maryland to the north no doubt reached his ears and in spirit of adventure he sought a new home in the province of his kinsmen. And the land which he surveyed for him and his sons in the vicinity of Round Bay of the Severn is to this day unequalled in beauty and fertility of all the lands bordering the many rivers which empty into the Chesapeake Bay.

Matthew Howard died intestate some time before 1659, and left behind five sons to carry on the name and all five except one, who became a Quaker, gave themselves to public service and distinguished themselves in the military history of Maryland.

The ancestry of Matthew HOWARD is unknown. One theory of his ancestry, the HOWARD-ARUNDELL theory has been found to have no validity.

Another theory, the HOWARD-DOUGLAS theory, is that Matthew was a great grandson of Thomas HOWARD and Margaret DOUGLAS (niece of King Henry VIII). This theory is also highly improbable. The foundation of Moss' theory rests on a false premise, that does not show a union between the HOWARD and DOUGLAS families as he implied.

Matthew HOWARD's son John HOWARD on his 1695 will affixed a wax seal, which corresponds with the undifferenced arms of the HOWARD family of England, from which descended the HOWARD family of the Duke of Norfolk. The arms were on an escutheon, a bend between six cross crosslets fitchee.

After the Battle of Flodden in 1513, Thomas, Duke of Norfolk, was granted an augmentation that appeared on the bend as a small shield with the demi-lion of the arms of the King of Scotland cut in half with an arrow through its mouth. The seal used by John HOWARD did not contain the augmentation.

Many writers have stated that the use of the arms by John HOWARD showed that the family was not too distantly related to the Norfolk line. They also believed that the MD Howards would not have used the arms, if they did not have the "legal" right.

Illegal use of arms was a problem, both in England and America. The purpose of the Herald's Visitations in England in the 16th and 17th centuries were to determine those who did have right to display arms. Little, if any, effort was made by colonial governments to enforce laws regarding Heraldry. Contemporary with when John HOWARD wrote his will, a Mr. Gore, a carriage painter in Boston created arms for socialites there.27

Undifferenced usage of arms passed at death to a man's eldest son, other sons being allowed to use a differenced version of the arms. In that John HOWARD used the undifferenced, pre-1513 arms of the Ducal HOWARDs his usage was illegal according to the laws of Heraldry. Whether the HOWARD family of MD was entitled to use a differenced version of the Ducal arms is unknown.

some researchers are showing that this Samuel, son of William and Ann was the same Samuel who married Margaret Philpott. However, that does not seem to be the case. Samuel/Philpott appears to have been born in Ireland; and if Nicholas is, indeed, a grandson of Wm and Ann, by a father Samuel, it is not likely that Samuel/Philpott would be his parents as nothing links Samuel/Philpott with any Nicholas. Also, geographic differences also make this unlikely.

David W. Eaton in Historical Atlas of Westmoreland county, Virginia states in his book "Samuel Bonum is said to have come from Kinsale, Ireland. It is known that he named the first tract of land he patented "Kinsal" in Westmoreland County." ...Whether Samuel was descended from English or Irish forebears has not been determined; Bonum is not a common name in Ireland but is frequently seen in Essex, England records. no record of his birth has been found in either England or Ireland, however.

"There is definite evidence that the name did come from France. Family tradition is strong on this point as the story is repeated by so many members of the family from many sections of the country. According to tradition the family left France nd came to England during one of the periods of religious persecution. Other evidence that the tradition is fact is . . . an old map of France dated 1620 whereon a town named Bonham is located Northeast of Saint Quentin.

He is entered as then of age 31 years and therefore must have been born about 1604 from Colchester, England. It has been variously disputed and then agreed that he was a brother to Nicholas Bonham. It is much more rational, logical and has more to support that as a matter of fact he was the father of Nicholas Bonham by a first wife whom he must have married about 1625 in England. There was a Thomas Bonham who was a famous English physician and writer and was perhaps a brother to George. It is interesting to note that a William Bonham was the son-in-law in 1538 of John Clere of the town of Colchester, England.

E. B. Hazie's 1954 revised addition of the Bonham book did not solve the question of George and Nicholas, but has added much data to this genealogy report. There is a copy of this book in the Ft. Worth, TX library.

From Mayflower Families through Five Generations: *Note: Nicholas Bonham has been called a son of George Bonham of Plymouth. George Bonham d April 1704 "being upward of 85 years of age" (MD 15:64) or "being about 95 years of age (PLYMOUTH CH REC 1:119). If we accept the younger age and conclude that George was born about 1614, the chronology is very tight, for both George and his putative son Nicholas would have had to marry at the age of 19. If George lived to be 90 or older, the chronology becomes considerably more likely. But even though the asserted relationship is chronologically possible, no evidence for it, besides surname identity, has been seen."

"BONHAM & RELATED FAMILY LINES, A Family Genealogy From the Mayflower to the 1990s" by Howard E. Bonham, co-authored by Jean Allin, copyright 1996 has in the prologue a brief paragraph regarding the family tradition that three BONHAM brothers me to America from England, but settled in different areas of the country. Anam Bonham, who arrived on the "Ark and Dove" in 1633 and first lived in Maryland, then NY; George Bonham and his son Nicholas, in Massachusets, then New Jersey, and Samuel Bonham in Virginia. George Bonham, age 31, from the passenger list of "Phillip" was bound for VA, but landed in Plymouth, MA in 1635.
His name was included on a list of males who could bear arms, ages 16 to 60, taken in 1643. He married Sarah MORTON 20 Dec 1644. Prior to this, in Aug. 1840, George Bonham, Sr., joined the local militia. He owned land in the Plymouth Colony and built a mill there. He or his son
George Jr., owned land until the early 1700s. He was a devoted church worker (and member of the Puritan Church), and a much respected citizen of the colony (The Hunt Connection, page 253).
Mr. Howard E. Bonham, still from the prologue, said that from "The Original Lists of Persons of Quality: Emigrants, Religious Exiles, Political Rebels, Serving Men Sold For A Term of Years, Apprentices, Children Stolen, Maidens Pressed, and rs Who Went From Great Britain to The American Plantations 1600-1700", page 94 by John Camden Hotten stated: "20 June 1635, These under-written names are to be transported to VA imbarqued in the PHILLIP Richard Morgan Mr. the Men have been examined by the Minister of the towne of Gravesend of their conformite to the orders & discipline of the Church of England: And tooke the oath of Alleg. die et A. prd." There were 34 men, 8 women, all listed as passengers on the PHILLIP to be transported to VA. Included in this list is the name of George Bonham, age 31. This ship sailed from
Gravesend, England on the 20th June 1635, and George took the Oath of Allegiance to England before departure. Nicholas, the supposed son, would have been 5 years of age, and might have been traveling with his father, but his name was not included on the passenger list since only
heads of the family's names were included.

George Bonham died in Plymouth 28 Apr 1704. The church record contains the following: "On April 28, 1704 dyed our brother George Bonham. He lived to a good old age being about 95 years of age. John Farmer, in "A Genealogical Register of the First Settlers of New England" page 36 said George Bonham, Plymouth, died 1704, aged c.93.

Lineage of Rebecca (Bonum) Eskridge- taken from information provided by Coz. Floyd Wickenkamp

Rebecca Bonum, first wife of George Eskridge, was the mother of all but one (Elizabeth) of George's children. She was the daughter of Samuel Bonum and Margaret Philpott.
There is some question as to exactly when Samuel Bonum arrived in Virginia. Three early references to a Samuel Bonham in records of Northumberland County probably referred to the same man we know as Samuel Bonum since the name Bonham disappears after 1660 and from there on there are numerous references made in the records to Samuel Bonum.
Samuel Bonham was the recipient of f Virginia land patent in 1633, but the precise location of the property has not been determined.
Samuel Bonham is listed as a witness in a law suit in Northumberland County 22 Aug 1655. (Record Book 14, p. 56)
Samuel Bonham is again mentioned in a a law suit 14 Nov 1660 when he took William Thomas to court for failure to pay his srent. (Nthumblnd Co. Order Book 2, p 133)
Samuel owned at least 3 tracts of land in Westmorelandd county. David W. Eaton in Historical Atlas of Westmoreland county, Virginia mentions 99 acres patented 13 October 16665 on Lynch's Poing; 288 acres acquired from Mrs. Joane Philpott, mother of his wife Margaret, located on "the south side of Bonum's Creek" across the creek from Pecatone and undetermined acrreage in what is now Colonial Beach. according to Nugent's Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol II, he also patented 400 acres in Lancaster County "on the freshes of the Rappahannock River 14 miles above Nansemond town", 29 Oct. 1669.
Eaton states in his book (op cit) "Samuel Bonum is said to have come from Kinsale, Ireland.. It is known that he named the first tract of land he patented "Kinsal" in Westmoreland County." ...Whether Samuel was descended from English or Irish forebrears has not been determined; Bonum is not a common name in Ireland but is frequently seen in Essex, England records. no record of his birth has been found in either england or Ireland, however.

gone to the court to hear a cause tried concerning Mr.

if he pleased presently after the said Sam'll Bonham was

Placed the eldest son of Mathew Howard. He married Catherine Warner, daughter of James Warner. James Warner died testate in 1673 bequeathing a legacy to Samuel Howard whom he styled as "son Samuel Howard."

In 1680 Samuel Howard was appointed one of the overseers of the estate of his brother Capt. Cornelius Howard, with John Hammond, later Major General, as the other.
His will, extant with his signature in a bold hand and a wax seal with a symbolic swan as the subject, was written on Feb 28, 1702/03 by John Hammond Jr. in the presence of John Howard and Andrew Wellsley. It was probated at court in Anne Arundel Co on Nov 9, 1703 "To wife Catherine the unnamed dwelling plantation and "Brushy Neck" during widowhood, in the event of her remarriage, then only her thirds; also negroes and household goods."


Property:
Philip Howard at the death of his father in 1;703, was made the executor of the estate, but he soon became involved in a lawsuit regarding the estate of his maternal grandfather James Warner of South River. James Warner by will left "Warner's Neck" to his daugher, Jane Sewell, with the provisions that it would descend to and remain always in the possession of his heirs. Her husband, James Sewell, sold it to Samuel Howard. This sale was contested by the other Sewell heirs. The court eventually decided in fafor of the convenyance, inasmuch as Samuel Howard by rights of his wife was an heir. At a subsequent rent roll, "Warner's Neck" was in the possession of Henry Pinkney by his marriage to the widow of Philip Howard.
Philip Howard died intestate in 1705. Henry Pinkney, Cornelius Howard, and Joseph Howard were made the guardias of his minor children. Shortly afterwards Henry Pinkney married the Widow Howard.

John was a surveyor who owned three tracts of land in Maryland: 92 acres at the head of Round Bay, Severn River; 200 acre called "Timber Neck" at the mouth of the Whetstone in what later became part of Baltimore City and one-half of a 200 acre tract, lying on Little Falls.

"Howard's Interest" (no acres noted) is listed under John's name in Lord Baltimore's rent roll for Anne Arundel Co, dated 28 Jan 1662. This land became the plantation home for John and his family. Like most plantations, Howard's Interest had its own burial ground which became the final resting place of John and several of his family. The property, situated near Round Bay on the Severn River, adjoined the plantations of his brothers Capt Cornelius Howard of "Howard's Hardship and Chance" and Samuel Howard of "Howard's Hope".

John Howard was apparently the thrifty member of the family, for instead of immigrating like his brothers he allowed himself to be transported and consequently saved the cost of the passage of himself and his movable goods from Virginia to Maryland. He became a convert to the Quaker faith and consequently did not distinguish himself in military service as did his brothers. He was the only one of the second generation to marry twice - both wives being widows. If issues resulted from these marriages only one son, John, of the first union matured. He married between the years 1664-1665, Susannah, who was the widow of Charles Stephens. The family name of Susannah is unknown, but the fact that she was made an heir in the will of Captain John Norwood may be a clue to a possible relationship.

Research Notes:
Pure speculation here, but John Howard m a widow, Susannah Stevens. Knowing Edmund* Howard was at least "connected" to 'William Stevens" to the point of inheritance from William Stevens and Edmund naming his son for him, also knowing that Edmund* used the Howard seal, thereby he was from this distinguished family of Howards, it is logical that "Mrs Stevens" was a widow of some member of William Stevens' family. Whether she was a sister-in-law to William Stevens or some other connection is not known; but for a direction of research, it doesn't seem to far afield to place her as such.

Following that logic, John Howard must be a close connection to Edmund. Many on the Internet place Edmund as a brother to John, son of Matthew Howard; but Matthew immigrated c 1630 to Norfolk, Virginia where his 8 children were born, all documented and none named Edmund. and Edmund was born in England in 1659.

Captain John SISSON (2) appears as an officer in the royal colonial army and the comrade of wealthy tobacco planters and large landholders of the Tidewater region. Capt. May 7 1667 Mathew instituted claims for land-rights, filed for 500 acres for transportation of ten persons, one of whom was "Sarah Darcy now my wife." Sarah Dorsey was the daughter of Edward Dorsey. Her three sons were left legacies in the will of her brother, Joshua Dorsey in 1687.

In 1681 Mathew was voted 100 lbs tobacco by the General Assembly for public service and in 1683 was one of the commissioners to purchase and survey towns and ports in the Province for the advancement of trade.

On Oct 3 1691, drew up his last will and testament in the presence of Richard Horner and Patrick Murphey. It was probated in Anne Arundel Co on Jan 12, 1691/92.

There are claims that Matthew HOWARD had a daughter Mary who married John HAMMOND. The earliest mention I have found of this is by J. D. WARFIELD in 1905.22 He claimed that since Matthew's son Samuel in his will made a bequest to his "cousin" [nephew] John HAMMOND, Jr., this proved that John HAMMOND, Sr.'s wife Mary was nee HOWARD, the daughter of Matthew.

The Maryland Calendar of Wills has a confusing abstract of Samuel HOWARD's will. The abstract states he left to "cousins John HOWARD, Eliza: NORWOOD, Sarah BRICE, Hannah HAMMOND, Cornelius and Joseph HOWARD and John HAMMOND, Jr.,
personalty." The abstract later states that trustees were "cousins John HOWARD and John HAMMOND, Jr., afsd."23 The abstract is correct (but easily misread) in that in the recorded will book copy,14 those names through Joseph
HOWARD were called "cousins". John HAMMOND, Jr., appearing after a second "and" in the Maryland Calendar of Wills was not included in being called a "cousin."

In the will book copy, the plural "cousins" was used to refer to John HOWARD and John HAMMOND, Jr. as trustees.

The original copy of Samuel Howard's wills states:24

"I give to my Cozen John HOWARD Twenty Shillings to buy a Ring.
I give to John HAMMOND Junr: Twenty shillings to buy a Ring.
I give and bequeath to my Cozin Elizabeth NORWOOD Fifteen shillings.
I give to my Cozen Sarah BRICE fifteen shillings to buy a Ring.
I give to my Cozen Hanah HAMMOND fifteen shillings to buy a Ring.
I give to my Cozen Cornelius HOWARD Tenn shillings.
I give to my Cozen Joseph HOWARD Tenn shillings."

While the others are called "cozens" [nephews and nieces] John HAMMOND, Jr. is not.

Later the will states:
"I leave my Cozen John HOWARD and John HAMMOND, Junr as my Trustees."

The recorded copy in the Maryland wills changed the spellings to "cousin"
in the various phrases, and changed "cousin" to plural in regard to the two trustees. The implication from the singular "cozen" in the original will is that in naming the overseers, only John HOWARD and not John HAMMOND, Jr. was a "cozen" [nephew] to Samuel HOWARD.

In that the "evidence" as provided by WARFIELD for John HAMMOND having married Mary HOWARD was based on Samuel HOWARD's will, and that the will did NOT indicate any relation between John HAMMOND, Jr. and Samuel HOWARD,
it appears WARFIELD was in error. John HAMMON[D], Sr. married between 26 Oct. 1677 and 1 Nov. 1678 to Mary, the widow of Thomas ROPER. As John HAMMOND had
sons who married by the early 1690s, Mary (widow ROPER) was apparently a second wife. The mother of the four sons John HAMMOND named in his will is unknown.

Notes:

Nicholas appears on 1669 records of Piscataway, NJ. Here begins the first chapter of the book "Bonham and Related Family Lines, A Family Genealogy from the Mayflower to the 1990s" compiled by Howard E. Bonham and co-authored by Jean Allin. They conclude that since there is no real evidence that Nicholas Bonham was the son of George Bonham, they would begin their book with Nicholas, as the first generation.

In 1668 he was the 10th colonist to receive a land grant of 122 acres in Middlesex Co., NJ. They had arrived in NJ sometime between the birth of Sarah in Barnstable in 1664 and the birth of Samuel in NJ in 1672. Soon after arriving in NJ hs made a Dutch Schepen, or magistrate, whose duty it was to nominate citizens to various official positions in the towns of East Jersey. He was approved as Sergeant of Militia in 1681 and belonged to a military group organized under Capt. Francis Drake. He took an active part in the affairs of the community and must have been successful in his business affairs.
He established the village of Bonhamtown to the east of Pacatawaytown, which exists today as a living trubute to the honor of this staunch pioneer. He built the first house there which stood for about 200 years, a frame house of 1 1/2 sto. The book "Where the Raritan Flows" by Earl Schenck published 1964 says that Bonhamtown, in Edison Township, honors Nicholas Bonham, who settled there c1682. Five British regiments were briefly quarted there during the Revolutionary War.
"The History of Piscataway Township 1660-1976" by Walter Mauly, page 65, says that Nicholas Bonham was a founder of the Baptist Church in 1689. His son Hezekiah Bonham, became a townsman in 1687.


NOTE: Mayflower Families: "No evidence has been found to support Monette's suggestion of sons Nicholas and Elijah."
Bonham family records Nicholas as marrying Martha Runyon. However, Runyon researchers do not show a Martha about this time frame.

Could this be the Samuel Bonham (m Margaret Philpott), possibly the one who was listed member of the London Co at Jamestown? He died in 1692. (ref: Virginia Colonials and their Maryland Relatives by Norma Tucker) Did he go to Maryland?

Or perhaps a better guess would be a member of Anam Bonham's family, which I have no info on except that he arrived on the Arc & Dove in 1633 and lived in Maryland for some period of time then in New York. Anam is thought to be brother to George and Samuel. Does anybody have Anam's lineage?

What other Bonhams were in Maryland? All my early ones are Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.

From Eskridge Family Genealogy Forum, submitted by Sara Washburn: "Colonel George Eskridge, a Deputy to the Virginia House of Burgesses for many years in the first half of the 18th century, was guardian to Mary Ball, the mother of George Washington. It is stated that Col. Eskridge, who died in 1735, came to America about 1670, probably from Lancashire. He married, first, Rebecca, daughter of Samuel and Margaret (Philpot) Bonum. Rebecca (Bonum)Eskridge had a brother, Samuel Bonum, whose wife was Elizabeth Johnston, the half-sister of Mary Ball. Col. Eskridge married, second, Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Vaulx.

By age thirteen, both of Marys parents had died, and family friend George Eskridge was appointed her guardian. For the next decade, she lived with Eskridge and family and her married half sister Elizabeth Bonum. Not much is known about her life at this time, but we know that she could read and write, and that she was an avid horsewoman.

After marriage, Mary lived at Pope's Creek Plantation, later called Wakefield. The next year, on February 22, she gave birth to her first child, George, named for her guardian George Eskridge. While living at Wakefield, she gave birth to two more children, Betty and Samuel, who were named for Mary's other guardians, her sister and brother-in-law. Also at Wakefield, Augustine's daughter Jane died at age 13.

This means that the "aunt and uncle" here is probably Elizabeth Bonum, wife of Thomas Bennett. Benjamin Hugh Bennett, in his 1960 book titled *A History of the Richard Bennett Family of Westmoreland County and Iredell County, N.C." comes to the same conclusion, and the Elizabeth Bonum was the sister of Samuel Bonum.

Thomas Bennett testate in Westmoreland County in 1763. His will named his wife Elizabeth and children Mary, Thomas Jr., William, Daniel, Charles, Joseph and Solomon Bennett.

John's first wife Mary is a daughter of Richard and Elinor (Browne) Warfield. After Mary's death, he marrried Katherine, widow of Henry Ridgely Jr and daughter of Col Nicholas and Ann (Dorsey) Greenbury.

From his father, John inherited 90 acres at the head of Round Bay on the Severn River. Here he made his home named Middle Neck. Another land holding was 200 acres called Timber Neck, located at the head of Middle Branch, Baltimore Co MD.

John Howard, b. 1667, d. 1703.
John Howard married Mary, daughter of Richard and Eleanor Browne Warfield, in 1695. Their children were: Benjamin Howard, married Catherine Buck; Alsolute Howard; Rachel Howard, married Charles, son of Charles and Deborah Dorsey Ridgely. After the death of his first wife, he married Katherine, the widow of Henry Ridgely and the daughter of Col. Nicholas Greenbury, the one time commander-in-chief of the militia of the Province. Inasmuch as Katherine is not mentioned in her husbands will, it is presumed that she died shortly after the birth of their only child, Katherine Howard, born 1703, married Orlando Griffith.
At the parental estate on the Severn, John Howard lived a life of a wealthy Maryland Planter surrounded by his family and a large number of white servants and negro slaves. John was buried, according to his request in his will, beside his father in the family graveyard at Round Bay.

It it believed that he was born during his father's migration from Massachusetts to New Jersey. According to Jack D. Ross, Hezekiah was born in Barnstable Township, Barnstable, Maryland. At the death of his father he was made executor of thill along with his mother, although he was not of legal age. Thus, he surely had the confidence and respect of his father.
He was accepted as a townsman of Piscataway 2 Jan 1687/8 apparently on coming of age. He married in 1690 Mary Dunn, daughter of Hugh Dunn and Elizabeth Drake, one of the immigrant families of Mass. Hugh Dunn mentioned Hezekiah in his will. ry was born 19 Jan 1671 in Piscataway. They had four children: Mary, Samuel, Hannah and Sarah, their births being preserved in the Piscataway records." Family tradition indicates that he was an Episcopal clergyman. He was a farmer by trade.
During the period 1690 to 1699 there were numerous land transfers made by Hezekiah and his wife Mary, including receiving a patent for land at Piscataway in 1695. "Bonham's lot," also "Bonham's creeks," and "Nicholas Bonham's land" are spn of in different conveyances.
On 1 May 1697 Hezekiah Bonham received confirmation of a grant of 182 acres "in right of his late father Hezekiah Bonham, Thomas Ffarnewoorth and Daniel Lippington." Hezekiah Bonham and wife Mary later sold two of these tracts.
On 9 Oct 1697 Hezekiah Bonham of Piscataway and wife Mary sold land in Piscataway part of which was the "remainder of land held by Bonham in the right of Daniel Lippentone"
Hezekiah and wife Mary sold further land in Piscataway to Edward Slater on 27 Oct 1698. (Lippentone and Slater were brother-in-laws).
One Sunday in about 1697 or 1698 Hezekiah, who was credited with being a religious man and one of influence in the church, was found working by the very religious Edmund Dunham, his brother-in-law. Hezekiah's sister Mary had married Edmund Dm in 1681. Mr. Dunham was the first white child born in Piscataway township, and his father, Benjajah Dunham, is said to have settled here years before any other Englishmen arrived. Oliver B. Leonard in writing on "Piscataway Planters" says "Edmund Dunham grew to be an influential member of society, and became a lay preacher, helping to mold the tender consciences and direct the religiously inclined of the pioneer community." At that time Edmund was pastor of the Baptist Church of Piscataway. Because Edmund found Hezekiah working on Sunday he took him to account. To quote Morgan Edwards on the incident:
"Bonham put Dunham to prove that the first day of the week was holy by divine institution. How the debate was carried on is not known; but it is known that the above attack was the thing which set Mr. Dunham to study the subject; and that cing the seventh day of the week was the effect. In a short time after 17 people sided with Mr. Dunham which opened a prospect of having a Sabbatarian church in Piscataway; to prepare for it Mr. Dunham went to Westerly, (RI) and there received ordination at the hands of Rev. William Gibbons; and in 1705 he and his party were formed into a church," the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Piscataway.
Hezekiah was not among the organizers. He had moved to Hunterdon in West Jersey in about 1698 as he appears in no record of any kind in Piscataway after 1698, except the sale of further land in Piscataway to Edward Slater on 27 Oct 1698. (Lintone and Slater were brother-in-laws). Evidently the property was sold after their move since on 18 March 1698/9 he appears in a list of inhabitants of Maidenhead when Gov. Jeremiah Basse and others, as agents, sold 100 acres to the inhabitants of Maidenhead for 5 shillings, for a meeting house, school and burial ground, thus indicating that he had an interest in that section of New Jersey.

Mary Dunn died Nov 7, 1699 and he remarried in 1700 in Hunterdon Co. By his second wife he had 15 more children, some thirteen of whom bore names ending in the Biblical "iah". Hence they are called the"iah" BONHAMS. These children were Heze, Jr.; Nehemiah; Zachariah; Zedekiah; Amariah; Temperance; Malachiah; Amaziah; Jeremiah; Ephraim; Josiah; Isaiah; Obadiah; Zephamia; and Uriah.
On 28 Aug 1701 he is mentioned as an abutter in Middlesex Co,; on 26 Aug 1703 he was among those who consented to an agreement between Dr. Daniel Coxe, Esq. and Thomas Revell, on behalf of purchasers of land in Maidenhead and Hopewell Townsh
On 1 Jan 1712/3 he contributed money to organize a new county (in this document he is Hezekiah Bonham, Sr., indicating that a younger Hezekiah, not necessarily his son, was in the town).
On 24 Nov 1722 he witnessed the will of Jonathan Stout of Hopewell Township.
In 1723 he was a judge in Hunterdon Co.
On 6 Nov 1730 his original signature appears with others on an agreement to sell the town lot to the highest bidder.
On 21 April 1732 his bond is mentioned in the codicil to the will of Daniel Howell of Trenton.
On 9 July 1738 his signature appears on the will of Henry Merson, the last known recording of his name. The exact date of his death and burial place are unknown.

There is some debate as to the identity of his second wife. According to "Mayflower Families through Five Generations," Vol 4, p 37, "Hezekiah Bonham does not appear in the Hunterdon Co. court records but is mentioned in the following document, none of which mention a second wife or any other children." It also states "This claim may have originated in misinterpretation of the will of Samuel Hunt of Maidenhead, Hunterdon Co, dated 15 Jan 1717/8 in which he decreed that his real estate was to be partititioned among Samuel Hunt's heirs by son Samuel, by Hezekiah Bonham, and by John Prince."
According to "The Bonham Family" by Samuel J. Bonham, pg 9, she was Ann Hunt, daughter of Ralph or Samuel Hunt. This theory is derived from the will of Samuel Hunt, New Jersey Archives, Vol. 21, p 248.
According to "Bonham and Related Family Lines" by H. E. Bonham 1996, says on page 229, that Hezekiah's second wife was Mary Bishop, daughter of David & Mary (Alger) Bishop according to the will of David Bishop 07 Jan 1684 where he mentions a Hezekiah Bonham married to his daughter Mary. However, in 1684 Hezekiah, son of Nicholas, was 17 years old and it was four years later that he married Mary Dunn in 1690. There must have been another Hezekiah Bonham; although, according to references, there was no evidence of another Hezekiah Bonham.

The Samuel Bonum with the 1748 will in Northumberland County is definitely the son of Samuel Bonum and Elizabeth Johnson, her first husband. This couple had two sons: this Samuel and a son Thomas who died young. Samuel's birth on 22 JUL 1723 was recorded in the register of St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland County. The existance of the son Thomas Bonum is, I believe, indicated in the gaurdianship account of Samuel Bonum as the funeral expense for his brother Thomas. (I need to verify this.)

The father, Samuel Bonum, died testate in 1726 in Westmoreland County. His names his son Samuel and the child his wife carryiing. He appointed George Eskridge as guardian to his children, which duty was later assumed by Lindsay Opie. Opie's account of his guardianship was settled in 1738 or 1739 (Westmoreland County Fiduciary Accounts 1742, p. 89 according to Elizabeth Combes Pierce, writing in April of 1935.) The account includes payments to Mrs. Bennett and a Mrs. Chatten for board, a wig for John Johnson (this cannot be his uncle John Johnson who died in 1721, and who had no children.). It also pays money to Mr. Thomas Bennett and then a payment to "Aunt and Uncle Thomas and Elizabeth Bennett."

In her 1935 article in the William & Mary Quarterly, Elizabeth Combes Pierce uses the above account as absolute proof that the maiden name of Mary Ball's mother was Bennett. Such a conclusion does not hold water.

Samuel Bonum, the orphan, on his mother's side, had but one uncle and one aunt. The uncle, John Johnson who was the brother of Elizabeth Johnson, died in 1721 with no children. Mary Ball, his mother's half sister was the only other sibling of Elizabeth Johnson.

This means that the "aunt and uncle" here is probably Elizabeth Bonum, wife of Thomas Bennett. Benjamin Hugh Bennett, in his 1960 book titled *A History of the Richard Bennett Family of Westmoreland County and Iredell County, N.C." comes to the same conclusion, and the Elizabeth Bonum was the sister of Samuel Bonum.

Thomas Bennett testate in Westmoreland County in 1763. His will named his wife Elizabeth and children Mary, Thomas Jr., William, Daniel, Charles, Joseph and Solomon Bennett.

" all selling their interests to Cornelius McCartie of Brunswick Parish, King George Co., VA

Cornelius McCartie (b. ca. 1766) was married 2 Dec 1787 to Susannah "Sukey" Hardwick (born 1767), dau. of Margaret Glascock (b. ca. 1745) and her first husband Aaron Hardwick (she m. 2nd to William Turley). Margaret Glascock was the dau. of John Glascock and wife Margaret Orear (above referenced). By the way, Cornelis and Susannah McCartie later moved to Fayette Co., KY ca. 1797; in 1809 they were residents of Otter Creek in Hardin Co., KY (now Meade Co.); they had 11 children, one of whom was named Enos Orear McCarty.]

Property:
Joseph Bohannon and Elizabeth Neville probably moved to Prince William County shortly after the birth of their
son William in 1730. On 03 June 1730, George Neville (Neavil) obtained a warrant for 275 acres of land in
Prince William County that was surveyed for him on 31 August 1730. It adjoined the Kettle Run tract of Colonel Carter and lands of William Hackney, Colonel Page, Baldwin and Mr. Debut. George Neville was assignee of William Owen for 181 acres in Prince William County on the South Fork of Bull Run, Catlet's Branch, Bull Run Mountain, drains of Broad Run and the north end of Mother Leather Coat Mountain. The tract had been warranted to Owen on 12 July 1739 and surveyed on 06 March 1739/40. It adjoined land of John Glasscock.

On 31 October 1743 George Neville (Neavil) had 183 acres in Prince William County surveyed for him. The tract was on Mother Leather Coat Mountain on Catlet's Branch and adjoined his own land. The land on Broad Run and Mother Leather Coat Mountain fell into Fauquier County when it was formed from Prince William County in 1759. A warrant for land in that location, dated 25 February 1764, which was surveyed on 12 March 1770 for Mr. Yelverton Peyton, adjoined land of Solomon Jones which had been taken up by Captain Neville

By 1741, Peter and his family had left the Virginia Tidewater area, and moved northwest to the "backwoods" to join his brother John at the foot of Mother Leathercoat Mountain located in Prince William County (later Fauquier Conuty). He leased 200 acres from Capt. George Brent described as being on Slate Run, and just west of Brentsville. It would be about 7 miles south of the Manassas National Battlefield Park. He is listed on poll lists there in 1741 and 1761. The poll list from 1761 shows that Peter voted for Colonel John Baylis and Colonel Henry Lee (father of Lighthorse Henry Lee of Revolutionary fame and grandfather of Robert E. Lee) for Burgesses of Prince William County. His wife Jane evidently died in the 1760's, and he married a second time to Mary. Peter had moved about 12 miles further northwest by the early 1760's when he settled on a piece of Carter property in the Goose Creek area of Fauquier County near the historic "Ashby's Gap" pass through the Blue Ridge Mountains. A mansion named "Oakley" now stands where his property was located just south of the Alexandria Turnpike. This ancient road is now U.S 50, the Lee-Jackson Highway.

On the eve of the Revolution, in 1770, Peter (or his son Peter) was hauled before the Loudon County Court for apparently behaving in an ungentlemanly manner toward one Abraham Lewis. Peter was the leader of three men who each had to post bonds of good behavior. Peter was 61 at the outbreak of the Revolution, and was appointed surveyor of the road from Pantherskin to the Blue Ridge, and was charged with keeping the road in repair. Because of his service as a "Road Reviewer" his descendants are entitled to membership in the D.A.R. and other patriotic organizations. A neighbor of Peter's several miles to the west was John Marshall, who was born in 1755 in Frederick County and became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1801. In the 1780's Peter was sued by Marshall for two pounds and collected in the suit. The 1782 tax list of Frederick County list him as owner of 11 slaves.

Shortly after the tax lists were made up, he and his family by his second wife Mary moved to Rowan County, North Carolina, then the whole northeast corner of the state. Peter settled on Dutchman's Creek in the Yadkin Valley (now Davie County), just north of Salisbury. It appears that a large group of Fauquier County families migrated to the North Carolina Piedmont, perhaps in one caravan. This migration was just after the end of the war, for Cornwallis surrenderd after the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. Very likely the Virginia homes and farms of these people were destroyed in the War, and they were forced to leave their homesteads to find new land. Some of Peter's sons fought in the North Carolina militia during the war, and perhaps they were attracted to new land in the Carolina's during this adventure and consequently moved there after the hostilies ended.

Peter was the son of Thomas and Sarah Stone Glasscock. He married Jane Fishback bef. 1735
and they had nine children. John, Gregory, James, Peter, Sarah, Jesse, Jane, Frances and Elizabeth. He married Mary Jane Rector abt 1760 and they had eight children, Spencer, Moses, gregory, charles, William, Wharton, Elijah and Margaret.

Will:
Peter wrote his will on October 24, 1783. Included in it was a plantation of 320 acres lying between Dutchman's Creek and Cedar Creek in Rowan County, 10 Negroes, and several amounts of cash. All, or most, of his children by wife Jane remained in Virginia where they married and rasied families. He willed one shilling to each of his children in Virginia. The children of his second wife Mary, located in North Carolina, and received the bulk of his estate.
