TEXAS PIONEER DIES.

Flatonia, Tex., Feb. 23. ? In the death of Charles Henry Faires, Flatonia, and Fayette county have lost another pioneer citizen. Next to the youngest of eight children and the last to pass to his reward, he was born at Plum Grove, near LaGrange, Texas, September 28, 1847, and passed away after several weeks' illness, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. C. McVea at Houston, Feb 20, 1924.

He was the son of William A. and Ada McClure Faires, who came to Texas from Tennessee as colonists under Stephen F. Austin in 1832. The old pioneer home in which he first saw the light is still standing at Plum Grove.

Mr. Faires has been intimately associated with the development of the Flatonia community, having, with his brothers built the first ranch house on the original William A. Faires survey on which the tow [sic] of Flatonia now stands, and began the raising of horses and cattle at an early day.

William married Ada McClure on 15 Sep 1831 in Tennessee. Ada was born on 1 Feb 1810 in Tennessee; died on 19 May 1874 in Fayette Co, Texas; was buried in Old Plum Grove Cem, West Point, Fayette Co, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

From letter: "Your father and my grandfather both fought for the Republic of Texas and through the Mexican War. Was in the Battle of San Jacinto and a great many others both the Mexicans and Indians and when Mexico wanted to take back a partf the territory from the Rio Grande to Gaudelupe. General Zachery Taylor got a regiment and fought them clear back into Mexico. But he told his men when they were ready to cross the Rio Grande all that had families could go back, so grandfather returned You and your daughters can all go in the Daughters of the Republic, also the U.D.C. if you are not already members. I am a member of both. Went in on your father's record in U.D.C. and my grandfather's D.R.T."

JAMES FAIRES was born Apr 5 1811 in North Carolina. On Nov. 9, 1834, in Shelby County, TN, he married Syntha Payne Hanks, daughter of the Rev. Thomas Hanks and wife, Sarah Hill Hanks. Syntha died after giving birth to their only child, James Hanks Faires, on Sept 27, 1835, in Tennessee. Several months later, James, his infant son, his in-laws and numerous other members of the Hanks family came to the Republic of Texas in a wagon train. James received a First Class Land Grant (Certificate No. 141) in Robertson County.
James Faires later married Susannah Shelton by whom he had several children. Although it is family tradition that James fought in the war for Texas independence, no documentation has been found. A Bounty Warrant for 800 acres in Limestone County was awarded to a James Faires and it is believed to be the same person. He also owned land in Smith County, but the only proof of his residence is in Angelina County in the late 1840s and early 1850s. He died before February 1879 in Texas. Information on James Faires has been difficult to find. His present day descendants spell their name Farris.

Research Notes:
Unable to find verify the spelling of his name or find him. Speculation is that he could be P.J. Fairas. Another thought his name was John James Farrir. Spelling vary from Farrir, Fairas, Faires, Ferris, Farris. But from the phonetic attempts at his name, it looks quite similar to the spelling of her mother's 2nd marriage, James Faires, Sr. So, probably not too bold to assume he is from that family.

Records on James Faires are quite sketchy, other than reference to him in the Daughters of The Texas Revolution records. His first wife Synthia Hanks had a middle name of Payne, which is the maiden name of Susannah Shelton's mother, another dead-end. But tracing Synthia's parents in hopes of finding a Payne connection - none were found.

Indications that Susannah died in Johnson County, Texas; however census from 1870 and 1880 for J.T. Faries/Ferris are apparently Jessie Thomas. Susannah was born in Alabama and there is no indication the Sheltons were in Alabama. Don't think this is our family.

RICHARD O. FAIRES. A man's life work is the measure of his success, and he is truly the most successful man who, turning his powers in the channel of an honorable purpose, accomplishes the object of his endeavor. Such a man is Richard O. Faires, who was born in Fayette County, Texas, in 1841, the fourth of eight children born to William A. and Ada (McClure) Faires, who were born in Alabama and Tennessee respectively, their marriage taking place in the latter State. In 1883 [sic.], they came to Texas and settled in what is now Fayette County, on the Colorado River. In that early day, the Indians were quite troublesome, and while he was engaged in tilling his land and looking after stock, he was obliged to carry a rifle with him. He served in the Texas Revolution, and died on his farm, on which he first settled in 1885, his wife having crossed the river in 1874. They were worthy and consistent members of the Baptist Church. The subject of this sketch was reared and educated in the county of his birth, and upon the bursting the war cloud which had so long hovered over the country, he, in 1861, enlisted in the Confederate service and was in the campaign in New Mexico, and a participant in the battle of Val Verde. He was a member of Company I, a private, Regimental Commissary Sergeant, Orderly Sergeant of the company, and Lieutenant of the company under Capt. Killough, Green's Regiment, Sibley?s Brigade, and took part in every principal engagement in which his regiment participated, except the retaking of Galveston. He was in the battles of the Red River Campaign and at the time of Lee's surrender was with his command in Texas. He at once returned home and turned his sword into a plowshare, and set energetically about tilling the soil with the consciousness of having been a faithful soldier during the war. In 1869 he was elected to the position of County Sheriff, and discharged his duties faithfully and well at the time when it demanded a more than ordinary degree of personal courage and determination. He entered upon his duties in May, 1870, and served one term of four years, declining to become a candidate for re-election on account of bad health. He has twice been elected Mayor of Flatonia, in which capacity he is now serving (1894). He was married in 1877 to Miss Eliza Killough, a daughter of his former Captain and a granddaughter of Col. John H. Moore, an early Indian fighter of the State of Texas and the founder of La Grange, capital of the county. Mrs. Faires was born in the Lone Star State, and has borne her husband three children: Ira G. and Fairie (daughter) and Richard O. Jr. In 1878, Mr. Faires came with his family to Flatonia, which is located on his father's headright, where he has since made his home. He has been somewhat active in politics, is a stanch Democrat, and is a member of the A. F. & A. M., I. O. O. F. and other secret societies. He is an agreeable and genial gentleman to meet, has a hospitable and comfortable home, and by his correct mode of living, has gathered about him numerous friends. ? p. 203

SUDDEN DEATH.
Mayor Faires of Flatonia Dies Suddenly of Heart Failure.

Flatonia, Fayette Co., Tex., Aug. 17. ? Mayor R. O. Faires of this place, who was seen on the streets yesterday in apparently vigorous health, died suddenly of heart failure last night at 9:30 o?clock. Mayor Faires was 57 years of age, a native of Fayette county and a prominent citizen here, where he has resided for the past twenty years. He leaves a wife and four children, besides a host of life-long friends to mourn his sudden death. Deceased was, at the time of death, high priest of Moulton chapter of Masonic lodge, and a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, Knights of Honor, American Legion of Honor, Independent Order of Odd Fellow lodges and Killough champ, U. C. V. He was sheriff of and tax collector of Fayette county in 1870-74 and has been elected mayor of Flatonia successively for three terms. An honored confederate veteran, prominent in political circles as an advocate of free silver, and endeared to all as a noble friend and useful citizen, his death has cast a gloom over the entire community. Mrs. Faires, who has been at Fort Davis, Tex., for some time, will reach Flatonia to-morrow in response to telegraphic notification of her husband?s demise. ? Galveston News.

R. O. FAIRES.
In the death of R. O Faires Flatonia has lost one of its most just and upright citizens. He was a man whose friendship could be counted on in adversity as well as prosperity. He had a kind word and a helping hand for all who approached him and were deserving of help. He was a man of the people, and was in touch with the humblest of his fellow creatures. He sought to oppress no one, and was ever ready to accord to others the same privileges he asked for himself. If he committed any errors they were of the head, not the heart, and no man was more ready to acknowledge an error than he. He was ever foremost to respond to the call of duty, and commanded a company in Green?s Texas Brigade throughout the civil war. He also volunteered to raise a company for the war with Spain, but failed to obtain the requisite number of men. He was a kind, loving and indulgent husband and father, and in his death his family and friends have suffered an irreparable loss. He was truly a man ?without fear and without reproach.?

"Annie Payne Shelton settled in Murry Co, Tenn. Shelton is Scotch. Payne is Irish and Wilson Welch. I presume that is the Great Grand parents. Grandfather Shelton settled in Tenn. had born to them 8 children in all they were all reared in that state. Two of the daughters married and remained there. Aunt Kiziah and Aunt Polly. My Grandmother Susan came to Texas with the family also Uncle Washington. Father of Tom, Amos, George, and others. Uncle Amos your father. Aunt Maria Carraway, aunt Tibitha Jones mother of Barton, Lura, Annie and Irene. Aunt Martha who married a Wallis reared 3 sons. Dan, Frank, and Robert. Then a Mr. Hartwell reared 2 sons and one daughter. Will, Albert, Roxie.
"The Sheltons first settled in San Augustine lived there about 3 years moved to Nacogdoches. Was there at the time of the Battle of San Jacinto, remained there 3 or 4 years and moved to Chambers Co. All buy my Granmother first married a John Kirk. He was killed at the Battle of San Jacinto. She was left with 2 babies one just an infant, died at 2 or 3 months of age. Kirk was Aunt Mary Sherman's father.
"Aunt Mariah Carraway and her husband settled at Neches. Reared 2 sons and one daughter. Jeff is the only name I know. He died and she married a Mr. Nelson, they reared 8 boys and 2 girls but I don't know but 2 names among them. Dwight was in Houston two years ago. Cousin Robert Willis told the other name. Clinton a Doctor. That was in 1910. Cousin Robert told me if I could get in touch with you I could add something to what he told me, and also referred me to Uncle Washington's older daughter Mrs. C.F. Jones who he said lived near Stephenville, Erath, Co. But he could not give her rural no. so I nevr did write to her. He said she was older than he so I don't suppose there is any use trying now. I have Cousin Roberts old letter here by me copying what I can from it. And I did the same for him. He has forgotten all he wrote to me. He also referred me to Irene Fulks, but she is another one I never did get in touch with as well as your own dear self. So now dear, I hope you get something out of this anyway. Now I am going to take a clear sheet of paper and write your Father's war record on a clean page.

"Your father and my grandfather (2nd husband of Susan Shelton Kirk) both fought for the Republic of Texas and through the Mexican War. Was in the Battle of San Jacinto and a great many others both the Mexicans and Indians and when Mexico wanted to take back a part of the territory from the Rio Grande to Gaudelupe. General Zachery Taylor got a regiment and fought them clear back into Mexico. But he told his men when they were ready to cross the Rio Grande all that had families could go back, so grandfather returned. But your father went right on and fought in the battle of Monterey and wanted to go straight on, but the government took part of General Taylors men and sent them around by boat to General Scott. So General Taylor and his men turned north, conquered New Mexico and lower California and on their return buried the bones of some of the American soldiers who had been way laid and killed. Then there was a lull in fighting until the war between the States.
"When the Federals slipped in and took Galveston everything was aroused. A.C. Shelton was on the job and was made a leiutenant under Capt. Richard Dowling. General magruda in Charge. They recaptured Galveston and had to hold if for months but the Federals went around and thought they would come in through Sabine Pass. A.C. Shelton was sent to hld the Pass with 40 men, and they sank and captured their boats as fast as they entered and the Federals gave that up. That was considered the most brilliant defeat of any battle of the army and Jefferson Davis awarded the company a gold in honor of the occasion. Then A.C. Shelton was in the battle of Pleasant Hill and Mansfield La.
"Now I hope this will be as much consolation to you as it has been a pleasure to me to write it. You and your daughters can all go in the Daughters of the Republic, also the U.D.C. if you are not already members. I am a member of both. Went in on your father's record in U.D.C. (United Daughters of theConfederacy) and my grandfather's D.R.T." (Daughters of the Republic of Texas)

J. H. FARRIS, 54, died at 12:35 a.m. Thursday at his home in Tennessee Colony after an illness of several days.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the home with DR. E. H. Wylie, pastor of the First Christian Church officiating, Burial at the
Tennessee Colony Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Vera (Tucker) Daughters, Mrs. Mary E. Stovall of Daisetta, Misses Inez, Essie, Lorie?, Marrine, and Clara Farris; Two sons, J.H. Farris. JR., Tucker Royal Farris.

Memorial services for William Mack Hudson, 60, of Tennessee Colony will be at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home Chapel.
Mack was born to Fagan and Ellon Hudson. He grew up in Tennessee Colony and was an avid outdoorsman his entire life. Mr. Hudson worked as an engineer for Union Pacific Railroad for 38 years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fagan Hudson and step father, Linden Lewis.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Crystal Hudson; son, William Mitchell Hudson; daughter, Camille Marie Hudson; mother, Ellon Lewis and granddaughtrer, Clarissa Hudson. He is also survived by sisters, Judy Trammell, Martha Hester and her husband Bill, and Mary Bunt; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
