Greene County, Tennessee 1783 Tax List

Listed below are the names listed on the 1783 Greene Co Tax list, this was the first list taken for Greene Co. The original tax list can be viewed at the Nathanael Greene Museum in Greeneville.

This list does not have any locations just the names, although some notes of interest were added to this list of names:

Almost all on list were Revolutionary soldiers.
They were known as the "Nollichuckey Settlers."
In 1785 Adam Meek built his cabin farthest westward but civilization had not reached the present Knox Co border.
Many of them settled on the "Brown Purchase" -- land bought from the indians by Jacob Brown, a Major in the Revolution.
The Nolichuckey settlers were famous as riflemen.
Many of them were enlisted with the NC Continental Line or the VA Militia.
Samuel Wear, whose family came from Bucks Co, VA, was a border hero and one of the first TN representatives.
In 1782 several families came to Greene Co from PA. The Galbreaths, Rankins, Magills, Delaneys, Wilsons, Moores and McClungs.
Early land grants: the Nelsons, Vances, Crosbys, Inmans, Casteels, Pates, Jones and Conways.
The first pioneers here were the Gillespies, Crocketts, Henry Earnest, Francis Hughes, Nathan Davis, Ashael Rawlings and Col. Daniel Kenedy (first Clerk of Court) and Amos Byrd from Westover Manor in VA.
Maryland families to settle here were the Howards, Dewitts, Weltys, Hills and Gists.
From Washington Co., VA were Col Arthur Campbell, the Craigs, Blackburns.
Earliest NC families were the Loves, Whites, Alexanders, Balches and Vances.
Robert Wylie was one of the first merchants in Greene County.

1766 Thomas Lovelatty was granted 400 acres on Indian Camp Creek, a fork of Abitton's Creek.
1767 John Loveletty was given three grants totaling 650 acres in the same watershed.

Property:
1770 Thomas Lovelatty sold 200 acres of his 1766 grant t o Marshall(for L5[5 pounds] proclamation money.
1771 23 Oct Marshall Lovelatty sold to John Lovelatty th e above land for L20[20 pounds] proc. money.

Property:
1772 A land survey was made to establish the line between North and South Carolina. This placed some lands granted in North Carolina into South Carolina and the landowners were to turn in their grants and apply to South Carolina for
new ones. Otherwise the land would be declared vacant and granted to anyone who applied for it.
1775 Marshall and John signed a declaration asking the King for relief.
We do not know if Marshall and John received new grants or turned in their old ones. They were in Green Co. Tn by 1780

Military:
John Lovelady lived on Peyton?s Creek near the head of Dixon?s Creek. He was a revolutionary soldier and his wife molded bullets during the war.

This comes from a letter from a grandson of John Lovelady, from Cave Creek, Newton County, Arkansas written to John W. Bowens, author of an 1892 History of Smith County, Tennessee, and quoted in his book. The book, apparently typed and "self-published" is a classic on the county and is available at the Tennessee State Library and Archives.

Thomas' children are recorded in deeds in White Co, Tennessee. Based on age and residence, Thomas was possibly the son of either John or William of Greene Co, Tennessee. Although we have not proven any link of the two families, the naming parn of Thomas' family follows most closely the pattern of William Morgan. David McDonald, who researched Thomas Lovelady's family in the 1980s provided much of this data, most of which is verified by vital and census records. Much of the Bounds information was taken from Ruth Dryden's "Bounds Genealogy."
Thomas Lovelady was born about 1767 and died 1826-27 in White Co, Tennessee. On 18 Oct 1872 (sic) he married Jane Wear in Greene Co, Tennessee. She was the daughter of John Wear (of Robert) and Nancy Moore (of Moses.)
In 1788 a Thomas L-o-v-e-l-a-t-y served in the militia from Waldens Creek and the West Fork of Little Pigeon under Col. George Doherty on an expedition against the Chicagamuaga Indians.

William Lovelaty, Joseph Lovelaty and Curtis Mills wen the same militia. In 1799 Thomas Lovelady with William Lovelady and perhaps Jesse Lovelady, signed a petition of the inhabitants south of the French Broad asking the General Assembly for relief from land and taxation problems. He was on the Sevier Co, Tennessee, tax list the same year.
Served in War of 1812 for Tennessee. Enlisted 12/10/1812 under Col. Thomas Benton, Capt. Benjamin Hewitt. (from Kirby Wilson)
Together with his partner Thomas Bounds in 1810 Thomas Lovelady acquired many acres of land in White Co, Tennessee, much of it on Falling Waters, which is now in Putnam Co. In 1812 Thomas Bounds deeded 109 acres on Pigeon Roost Creek to Ts Lovelady, who was taxed on that land until 1826. On the tax lists, Jane is listed in 1827, Jesse in 1825, and Thomas in 1828. On 29 March 1831 Thomas Bounds deeded 203 acres of land in Falling Water to Jesse Lovelady for $1. This deed included the Lovelady farm and dwelling. On 6 June 1832 a deed was recorded in Jackson Co, Missouri, between Jane Lovelady of White Co, Tennessee and the heirs of Thomas Lovelady, including their spouses. These same heirs later deeded back their shares to Jane Lovelady. On 1 Aug 1837 Jane Lovelady sold Thomas Lovelady's property in White Co, Tennessee to Joseph Farris, husband of Margaret (Mills) Farris. Margaret was the granddaughter of Ann Lovelady and Curtis Mills who married in 1784 in Greene Co, Tennessee. The Lovelady Cemetery is located off Cookeville Road to Sparta at the right of Pigeon Roost Creek. Thomas is probably buried there, but his headstone has not been found.

NOTE: There was a Nancy Maden m Nathaniel Cox 20 Aug 1839, Lincoln Co., MO, possibly his daughter's 2nd husband, or perhaps a grandchild?

GENEALOGICAL SKETCHES

Vol II - Lovelady
John Lovelady was born in Tennessee in 1787. His wife, Mary, was born in the same state in 1789. In 1850 the family was living in Hamilton County,Tennessee and their children were: Molinda, 1826; Elbert, 1831; Ephraim,1833; and John, 1836.

In 1850 another Lovelady family lived next to John and Mary Lovelady in Hamilton County, Tennessee. This was the family of Joseph and Deborah Lovelady, born in Tennessee and Virginia in 1820 and 1822 respectively.Their children at this time were: John, 1843; Robert, 1845; and Manah,1847. There is some reason to believe that Joseph was the son of John and Mary Lovelady.

There is no evidence that John and Mary Lovelady ever came to Greene County but it is known that their two sons, John and Elbert, came to this area and settled in Union Township during the 1850's. Elbert Lovelady married a woman named Isabella, born in Alabama in 1836. In 1860 their children were: Joshua, 1855; and John D., 1859. Both children were born in Arkansas.

John Lovelady, son of John and Mary, married a woman named Eliza, born in North Carolina in 1842. In 1860 their children were: Sarah E., 1857;and Henry L. 1860. Amanda Taylor, born in 1851, was living with the family at this time.

Joseph Lovelady, possibly a son of John and Mary, and his wife, Deborah,moved to Greene County during the 1850's and settled in Union Township. By 1860 two more children had been added to the family: Joseph, 1854; and Sevier, 1857. Both children were born in Arkansas.

Robert Lovelady, son of Joseph and Deborah, married Margaret A. Morgan in Greene County on Dec. 29, 1879. Robert's occupation is listed in the 1880 census as "physician."

Sevier Lovelady, son of Joseph and Deborah, married Josephine Boyd in Greene County on Nov. 2, 1882. Josephine was twenty-one years of age at the time.

The burial places of most of the members of the Lovelady families are not known. However, Sevier Lovelady is buried at the Beech Grove Cemetery in western Greene County and his marker shows dates of 1857 and 1926. The marker for his wife, Josephine , bears dates of 1861and 1917.

McKinney Lovelady served in the Sabine Indian War of 1836 and 1837. He was mustered in at Athens, Tennessee, on July 25, 1836 to serve for 12 months. He served in Cannon's Company, Tennessee Mounted Militia. Also serving were his nephews Sevier and William Fryar. McKinney served in the Cherokee Indian War in 1837 and 1838. He was mustered in on June 27, 1837 to serve 12 months. He served in B.B. Cannon's First Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. Also serving was his nephew Sevier Fryar.

Lovelady

Henry Lovelady was the patriarch of the Lovelady family in Greene County.He was born in Tennessee in 1813. He moved to Alabama in about 1834 and remained there for several years. In about 1843 he moved to Greene County where he resided in Union Township and followed the blacksmith trade.Henry's wife was named Sarah, born in Tennessee in 1814. Their known children were: Elizabeth, 1833; John, 1835; Jane, 1838; Madison, 1840; Jefferson, 1842; Cynthia, 1844; Mary Ann, 1847; Caroline, 1850; and George W., 1857. The five older children were born in Alabama while the remainder were born in Arkansas.

Madison Lovelady, son of Henry, married a woman named Minerva, born in Tennessee in 1844.

George W., son of Henry, married a woman named Martha and they had at least two children: Orleans, 1877; and Mewry, 1878. Both children were born in Arkansas. In 1880, George's sister, Caroline, was living in his household in Union Township.

Notes:

Jackson county was formed out of Lafayette in 1826. John W. Lovelady migrated to Lafayette county prior to 1820. Other family members followed from TN later.


John W was born about 1795 and died in Lafayette Co, Missouri on 1 Dec 1869. He went to Missouri in 1817 and with Solomon Cox made the first settlement in Dover Township of Lafayette Co. He was married to Mary Cox, daughter of Enoch Cox of Grayson Co, Virginia in Jan 1818 by the Rev Martin Trapp. It was the first marriage in the county. Their twin daughters were the first born in the county. He is listed on the 1840, 1850, and 1860 Census (Lafayette Co, Missouri). The 1850 Census lists him as John Lowlady.
His widow Mary was living with her daughter Sally Myers in 1870. Mary (Polly) died 16 Apr 1892 in Lafayette Co, Missouri.

Residence:
The History of Lafayette County MO (page 414) tells us that the first settlement was made by John Lovelady and Solomon Cox in 1817 and this was a half mile west of present-day Dover, MO. James Bounds Sr., James Bounds Jr., Obadiah Bounds, William R. Cole are also mentioned here. Christopher Jago, Wm. Carpenter and John Parkerson, all from TN in 1819 and Zachariah Linville, a Stonite preacher, Martin Trapp, a reformed preacher, John Welsh, Jesse Nelson, Enoch Fox, Wm. Fox (they both say Fox, but are likely to be Cox), Dyer Cash and Joseph Cantrell all came in 1818. I searched each of these names in the 1800, 1810, 1830 census records and none are from SC.

The History of Lafayette County (page 415) also tells us that James? older brother John Lovelady was the first marriage in the county, in January, 1818 to Miss Mary Cox, daughter of Enoch Cox of Grayson Co. VA, and their twin daughters were the first children later that year.

He looked stout and scarcely a gray hair in his head. I had been on a scout out near the groves(?) and I saw at least 20 thousand Federals [numbers seem high in the letter] bearing (?) on our left and being in command of the scout [assume NCO or junior officer] I had to report to Price under the spur and did not get to talk to Uncle John. We fought that evening at Lexington, 2 days after at Blue Mills. Next day at Big Blue [ a river ]. I fought at your old place near Blue Bridge.

James Lovelady was a minister of the Christian Church (restoration movement, known as Cambellites - Karl Kiser). James and Nancy removed from White County, Tennessee, with other members of their family to Missouri by 1831, where James helped to organize the Salem Christian Church in Platte Co, Missouri. The family was in Victoria County, Texas by 1845, when James and Nancy were on the Board of the First Christian Church. James and Nancy had three children, all daughters.
(1.) Jane (married Jackson Butts on 29 Jan 1835, in Jackson Co., Missouri);
(2.) Sarah (married M. M. Jones and died in DeWitt County, Texas, in 1860); and
(3.) Ann (married A. Lee on 4 Nov 1847, in Victoria County, Texas).
Sadly, all three of James and Nancy's daughters died relatively young. However, they remained on close terms with their sons-in-law.

the following provided by Mary Ehlers, 3665 N. Bond, Fresno CA 93726:
James was born 1790-1800 according to 1840 Census (Platte Co, Missouri), married Nancy; died in Texas after 1880 when he was listed in the household of grandson George Jones in San Saba County.
James was in Missouri by 1831 when he and wife Nancy, with William Bowers and wife Catherine, deeded land to Thomas Linville. (see notes of Nancy Linville Lovelady).

Our local library has "Missouri Miscellany". It is nothing more than a hodgepodge of genealogical items that some publisher threw together into a series of volumes. From Volume I, Woodruff, 1976:

The Salem Christian Church, Platte Co, Missouri, was organized 31 Dec 1837. Among its constituent members were James Lovelady, an Elder, and his wife Nancy. He was a minister of the Christian Church. By 1845 he was in Victoria, Texas, where was on the Board of Directors of the First Christian Congregation with Nancy Lovelady and Jackson Butts. He and his wife Nancy are shown on the 1860 Census (Dewitt Co, Texas)

1833: James Lovelady is likely to have some additional interesting details from October 1833 (Battle of Mormons or Battle of Big Blue--Kaw township, Jackson county, MO). I have not had a chance to fully follow the clues. The Mormons had a colony west of the Big Blue and there was violence because the Mormons voted in block and others took exception. A Thomas Linville was killed 31 Oct 1833. (Karl Kiser, 4 Mar 2010)

Elders present: Thomas McBride, Duke Young, Zachariah Linville, Sion Bradley, Bryam Lewis, and Joel H. Haden. Unordained: Richmond Roberts, William Burton, James Lovelady. Lovelady was made an elder. Letter mentions that followers of Joseph Smith are settling in Jackson County near the boundary line, perhaps 100 in number, and plan to rebuild the Temple.

Mary writes, "I had lost all trace of Pa's and George's whereabouts. I had written to Henry Shapes to know if he knew where Grandpa was. I have not received an answer."
"Mr. Dabney and Brother came by on their way home from Lyons where they had been holding a meeting. He said they had seen Grandpa and George."
Lyons is in Burleson County, but this only indicates there were at a meeting there. Perhaps they were living nearby. Frances writes a letter, estimated as 1877, stating she had "not heard from Burleson" She and George were in Red Rock and she stated that James Lovelady had left there - so, not sure who was in Burleson.


Census:
Frances living in Red Rock, dates her letter simply "May." Guessing this is about 1877. She writes to Susan Bounds Butts
"Pap started down to Lavaca about two or three weeks ago. He went by Mary's. I expect he will stay there some time. I got a letter from Mary the same day I got yours. She was well and doing well."
Leonard surmised Mary was in Burleson, but that would not be enroute from Red Rock to Lavaca. Perhaps this was after Nancy died, or perhaps it was after Mr. Norton died. Mary might have still been living near LaGrange.

Several Christians were in the very first wagon train to take the Applegate Trail, and the leaders of this train were
Christians. This was the train led by brothers-in-law Harrison Linville and Medders Vanderpool. Vanderpool was married to Margaret Linville, a younger sister to Harrison. Among the other Christians in this train were John Bird Bounds and his wife, Elizabeth Lovelady Bounds. Their oldest daughter, Nancy Bounds Linville, was married to Harrison Linville.

Except for one 77-year-old man, the oldest travelers in the
train were Richard and Mary Linville, both in their 70s. They were the parents of Harrison Linville, Margaret Vanderpool and Catherine Crowley.

Thomas and Mary ("Aunt Polly") Lovelady were also in
this train. He was a brother to Elizabeth Bounds. Three other Christian families in this train were Absalom and Mary Ann Faulconer, Robert and Sarah Lancefield, and John Burris and Emily Smith. John Burris Smith was a gospel preacher, and his arrival brought the number of Christian preachers in Oregon to four.

Another account of this pioneering train on the Applegate
Trail commented: "The travelers found a shortage of food for
their livestock, a scarcity of game for their own food and
backbreaking toil in building a track for their wagons."28
Unfortunately, they also had to confront the horrors of death on the trail. In a period of just ten days, Harrison and Nancy Linville each lost a parent.
Elizabeth Bounds, Nancy's mother, died from the privations of the trail on November 13 and was buried the next day. She died near present-day Roseburg in Douglas County. After burying her on the trail, the wagons passed over the road several times to obliterate any sign of the grave. This was done to eliminate any possibility of Indians robbing her grave or of wild animals digging up her grave.

Thomas Jesse (sic) Lovelady married Amanda Mary "Polly" Bounds 8 Aug. 1827 in White Co., TN.
(per Karl: Thomas J. Lovelady (Polly Bounds): his middle name isn't Jesse. Jesse son of the older Moses Lovelady (bc 1803) went to OR, claimed land and later returned to MO. People assumed the Jesse was simply the middle name of TJL.)


Thomas J. Lovelady (Polly Bounds) and Elizabeth Lovelady (John Bird Bounds) came to Oregon via the first wagon train over the Southern Route in 1846. This would be the Applegate Trail.

One can follow Thomas J. Lovelady through the census records. Birth and marriage in TN, children in TN, MO, & Oregon Territory. He and Polly still have descendants living in Oregon.

Dallas was settled in the 1840s on the north side of Rickreall Creek and was originally named "Cynthian" or "Cynthiana". A 1947 "Itemizer-Observer" article (quoted in 100 Years in Polk County: A Centennial Background) states: "[T]he town was called Cynthiana after Cynthiana, Ky., so named by Mrs. Thos. Lovelady." The History of Polk County Oregon, 1987, Page 12, states: "To Mrs. Thomas J. Lovelady was given the honor of naming the new settlement and she selected the name after her home town of Cynthiana, Kentucky." (findagrave)

some researchers indicate the middle initial J is for "Jesse." However, this is a confusion that came from the Jesse Lovelady listed in Oregon. He should be the son of Moses son of James of Smith Co, Tennessee. We do not know the exact relationship between James of Smith Co, Tennessee, and our Thomas Lovelady/Jane Ware. (Karl Kiser)

Several Christians were in the very first wagon train to take the Applegate Trail, and the leaders of this train were
Christians. This was the train led by brothers-in-law Harrison Linville and Medders Vanderpool. Vanderpool was married to Margaret Linville, a younger sister to Harrison. Among the other Christians in this train were John Bird Bounds and his wife, Elizabeth Lovelady Bounds. Their oldest daughter, Nancy Bounds Linville, was married to Harrison Linville.

Except for one 77-year-old man, the oldest travelers in the
train were Richard and Mary Linville, both in their 70s. They were the parents of Harrison Linville, Margaret Vanderpool and Catherine Crowley.

Thomas and Mary ("Aunt Polly") Lovelady were also in
this train. He was a brother to Elizabeth Bounds. Three other Christian families in this train were Absalom and Mary Ann Faulconer, Robert and Sarah Lancefield, and John Burris and Emily Smith. John Burris Smith was a gospel preacher, and his arrival brought the number of Christian preachers in Oregon to four.

Some of the wagons in the Linville-Vanderpool train
reached their destination in Polk County in late November,
and others were delayed until late December. The Linvilles
spent their first winter in Polk County at Jesse Applegate's
place on Salt Creek. Harrison Linville soon selected a
donation land claim on the Luckiamute River not far from
where John and David Lewis and their wives had settled the
year before. The Lewis families had taken possession of
rectangular claims of 640 acres for each couple on land formed by the forks of the Luckiamute River. John and Elizabeth settled on the west bank and David and Mary on the east bank. The north-south road that formed the border between the two claims became the main street of Lewisville.

The Loveladys were thrilled to see the Glen Owen Burnett
family again. They had left Missouri together and had
traveled together on the trail for many miles before the
Loveladys and others had decided to detour on the Applegate
Trail. The Loveladys settled temporarily on land adjacent to
the Glen Owen Burnett family, and on occasion the two
Christian families ate dinner together; Burnett reported that "the daily bill of fare" for the two families consisted of "wheat bread without shortening, sometimes meat if a deer had been killed, Irish potatoes roasted in the ashes or boiled in clear water, and boiled wheat with salt, and for a beverage coffee made of parched peas."

However, the Loveladys soon moved to a more desirable
claim two miles east of present-day Dallas along the banks of Rickreall Creek. This made them neighbors to the Fords,
Goffs, and Lyles. The support of the Loveladys greatly
strengthened the little congregation that was meeting on
Sundays in the Jefferson Institute log cabin, and Glen Owen

Burnett kept up a regular appointment of preaching for this
congregation. Thomas Lovelady became active in civic affairs. In fact, the first three judges appointed in Polk County were Thomas Lovelady, Harrison Linville, and David R. Lewis.

The Christians had arrived in Polk County in significant
numbers, and they were making their presence known.

We utter but the truth when we say that one of the truly good men of this county, and a man who is respected by everybody, whose character and influence stand out as an exception to the general rule of men in this day, is the subject of this sketch. Mr. Lovelady is now in his seventieth year, having been born October 18, 1815, in White County, Tenn. His father, Thomas Lovelady, who came originally from South Carolina, married Miss Jane Ware, whose birthplace is now included in the State of West Virginia. The father died in Tennessee. Young Lovelady was brought up on the old family homestead in the State of his birth, until the age of 17, when he settled in Jackson county, Mo. This continued to be his home until February 13, 1837, when he came to this county. To the means which he had accumulated before locating here he has added from time to time, and...

now has become one of the successful farmers and stock-raisers of the county. His landed possessions embrace 300 acres, a place which is excelled by none in this community. But more important and better than this he is an upright, sincere man. He is a member of no church, but what others talk of he does. When it becomes necessary for him to die, it can be said with truth that he was

Mr. Lovelady was married June 8, 1840, to Miss Juda Newby, a Kentuckian by birth. She died February 2, 1885. There had been 13 children born, five of whom are living: Cynthia, now Mrs. I. E. Graves ; Nannie, wife of P. Layton; Maud, wife of C. Thorpe; James and Lee.

A.J. Lovelady Dead
A.J. Lovelady died at his home pear Dye in Marshall township Sunday afternoon at 3:300 o'clock of kidney trouble and old age.
Deceased was in his 83rd year and was one of the earlier settlers of Platte county. He was born in White county, Tennessee., October 18, 1815, and came to Platte county n 1857 and has resided here ever since. Besides a host of friends he leaves four children, James and R.E. Mrs ( ) Thorp and Mrs. P. Layton.
The funeral services were held at Salem church Monday afternoon by Eldre George E. Dew, after which his remains were buried in the family lot at the Newby burying grounds.

Andrew married Judah "Judy" Newby on 8 Jun 1840 in Platte Co, Missouri . John Fryar was the son of Jeremiah Fryar and Rebecca Lovelady, who were early settlers in Hamilton County, Tennessee. According to Fryar family history, "John had considerable property and influence before the War Between the States." John Fryar married Elizabeth Guthrie as a second wife, He and his first wife, Margaret Hixson, had ten children before her death in the early 1850's, Three of his sons later served in the Confederate Army with Ashby's 2nd Tennessee Cavalry.

John had a farm of over 500 acres on the Tennessee River at North Chickamauga ,which included over 100 acres of rich bottom land. Likewise the entire Fryar family is noted as being prominent land owners in the area who supported and aided the Confederacy with their resources.

John is noted to have been a slaveholder before the war and afterwards was afflicted with blindness the last ten years of his life.

John Fryar was buried in the Fryar Cemetery, which is now on the property of the Dupont Company. Although John's tombstone has his birthdate as 12/23/1798, I believe the date is incorrect due to census records. The 1830 and 1840 Hamilton County, Tennessee census has John's birth taking place between 1800 and 1810. In Hamilton County, the census for 1850 has John being born in 1803. The 1860 census has John being born in 1806 and the 1870 census has John being born in 1805.

Lovelady: - Joseph and Deborah [Harris] Lovelady emigrated to Greene County in 1852, where he was given 200 acres of land as a compensation for service rendered in the Florida War. Before coming to Greene County they lived in Hamilton County, Tennessee. Joseph was the son of John, born in Tennessee in 1787, and Mary also of Tennessee in 1789. The 1890 census shows Mary living with her son, John, in Greene County, Arkansas.
Three of Joseph's five children were born in Tennessee: John, Robert and Mariah, who later married William Spain. Joseph Jr., and Sevier were both born in Greene County. Jospeh Sr. died April 12, 1861. Their son Robert became a prominent physician in Greene County, and according to Goodspeed's History of Greene County, he was the second resident of Crowley's Ridge to graduate in any profession..


Sevier married Josephine Kaminer Boyd on November 02, 1882. They were the parents of the following children:.
