Marshall Lovelady could have been born in Hanover Co., Va or in Orange Co., NC. He married Hannah. His will is dated 10 April 1792. It is witnessed by Joseph Lovelady, John Mahan, and Barefoot Runyon. It was probated fourth Monday, January, 1, Jefferson County, Tn, Minute Book 1, p.8, Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville. Microfilm Roll 35. He is probably buried in the Shiloh Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee, although his grave in not marked. (ref Sevier County, TN. Will book 2 pp 117-118 "will of Elizabeth Lovelady"

He was a Revolutionary soldier. (Ref: Tennessee Soldiers in the Revolution by Penolope Johnson Allen.)

The first record for Marshall Lovelatty was in 1754 when he was a chain carrier on a land survey for Thomas Lovelatty in Orange County, NC. Later records place him in Orange County l763-4. (Orange Co Court Minutes 1752-1766 by Shields)

From North Carolina Land Grants in South Carolina by Brent Holcomb pg 88 As is shown described as being on N W branch of Broad River below Loveletty's land. On pg. 80 we find Marshall in Mecklinburg Co NC with his 200 acres of land on Abbertons Creek at Thomas Loveletty's corner 28 April 1768. In 1769 he is shown as a chain bearer along with John Loveletty. [File #2374, Grant no.134 Bk 23 p.208 Mecklinburg Co NC] On page 157 Tryon Co.,a survey done for George Pee lists Marshel Lovelety as one of the chain bearers. Also on the same page, a survey for Joseph Neal Feb 3, .1769 shows John Loveletty and Marshal Loveletty as chain bearers.

15 April 1775 both Marshall and John sign a petition to the King for relief. The lands were in dispute with South Carolina. This is the precursor to the Mecklinburg Declaration. We also find John and James Mahan in the same area at the same time. In 1770 Marshall purchased 200 acres from Thomas Lovelatty for 5 shillings. He sold this land to John Lovelatty in 1771 for 20 pounds.

June 24, 1779 # 1480 Greene County 100 acres for Marshall Lovelady, joining Marshall Lovelady on the Cedar Branch. 1782 North Carolina grant #212 to George Taylor for 200 acres of Frank Holleys, on branch of Nolachucky River includes "an improvement made by Maltial Loveletty". (Washington Co, TN Deeds 1775-1800)

1787 Grant 100 acres on the Cedar Branch, Green Co Tn bordering Barnette Brumley granted by State of North Carolina. This land was sold to John Bird on 27 January 1790 (Green Co Tn Ieeed Bk 2 pg 165)

In 1780 he, along with Jacob Reynolds and David Reynolds, regained arms and ammunition which had been taken away form them. (Washington Co TN County Court Minute Books. Vol 1 1778-1799 pg 125)

Marshall was enumerated on an inventory of taxable property in Washington County, Tenn. in 1781 with horses and cattle valued at 650 Pounds. but no land [Early East Tennessee Taxpayers by Pollyana Creekmore)

He was on the 1783 tax list in Greene County, North Carolina which became Tennessee in 1796. This means that his children were born in North Carolina. His wife's maiden name is generally accepted as Ware (no relation to Jane Wear who m. Thos. Lovelady) The proof is said to be in the Zylks Bible, but the whereabouts of this Bible is unknown. The Houston family papers show a Thomas Wier witness to George Houston will of Sept 18, 1778 in Mecklinburg Co. Thomas Wier was brother to Margaret, widow of George Houston. 1773 in Craven Co George Weir and Mary his wife sell land to Thomas Houston. This same land had been sold to Samuel Weir in 1790. This shows that there were Weir families in the same area, and could have possibly been kin to Marshall's wife Hannah.

Listed below are the names listed on the 1783 Greene Co Tax list, this was the first list taken for Greene Co. The original tax list can be viewed at the Nathanael Greene Museum in Greeneville.

This list does not have any locations just the names, although some notes of interest were added to this list of names:

Almost all on list were Revolutionary soldiers.
They were known as the "Nollichuckey Settlers."
In 1785 Adam Meek built his cabin farthest westward but civilization had not reached the present Knox Co border.
Many of them settled on the "Brown Purchase" -- land bought from the indians by Jacob Brown, a Major in the Revolution.
The Nolichuckey settlers were famous as riflemen.
Many of them were enlisted with the NC Continental Line or the VA Militia.
Samuel Wear, whose family came from Bucks Co, VA, was a border hero and one of the first TN representatives.
In 1782 several families came to Greene Co from PA. The Galbreaths, Rankins, Magills, Delaneys, Wilsons, Moores and McClungs.
Early land grants: the Nelsons, Vances, Crosbys, Inmans, Casteels, Pates, Jones and Conways.
The first pioneers here were the Gillespies, Crocketts, Henry Earnest, Francis Hughes, Nathan Davis, Ashael Rawlings and Col. Daniel Kenedy (first Clerk of Court) and Amos Byrd from Westover Manor in VA.
Maryland families to settle here were the Howards, Dewitts, Weltys, Hills and Gists.
From Washington Co., VA were Col Arthur Campbell, the Craigs, Blackburns.
Earliest NC families were the Loves, Whites, Alexanders, Balches and Vances.
Robert Wylie was one of the first merchants in Greene County.

Property:
1772 A land survey was made to establish the line between North and South Carolina. This placed some lands granted in North Carolina into South Carolina and the landowners were to turn in their grants and apply to South Carolina for
new ones. Otherwise the land would be declared vacant and granted to anyone who applied for it.
1775 Marshall and John signed a declaration asking the King for relief.
We do not know if Marshall and John received new grants or turned in their old ones. They were in Green Co. Tn by 1780

WILL OF MARSHAL LOVELADY
In the name of God amen. I Marshal Lovelady being weak in body but perfect in mind and memory knowing that all men is to die nothing doubting but at the last day I shall see God for myseff and not for another and as touching my worldly estate to which God has blest me with I make this my last will and testament hoping there may be strict observance of the same. And first - I give to Hannah Lovelady my well beloved wife all and every particulars of my estate, but in case of her marriage or Joining in wedlock with any person whatever I do make this my reservation that she shall be entitled to her thirds as the law directs. First I give and bequeath to Elizabeth Brumley my beloved daughter one shilling as my estate is small. Secondly I give and bequeath to Serah Duncan one shilling for the above mentioned reasons, that is after all lawfiil debts is paid, and a Christian burial confered on me and the remainder of this estate to be equally divided towards paying for schooling and giving necessary learning and the support of my beloved Children that is Jesse Lovelady, Obid and Amos Lovelady Rody and Eleanor Lovelady and the whole to be left at the discretion of my beloved wife Hannah Lovelady in case of her not marrying, if otherwise at the discretion of a Guardian that may be shown.

Most researchers call him Obed. In those days a child was often named by looking in the Bible. I am sure therefore that he was named Obediah, but went by Obed.

Obed was one of the 'hands on board' early in the Spring of 1800 when John Wear, Nathan Wilkinson, John Berry, George Meyers, Elizabeth Grey and their families took small boats at Fine's Ferry, on the French Broad River at the mouth of the Nolachucky River and sailed for Boone's settlement on the Missouri River. From 1808 to l8l0 Obid received land grants in Sevier Co. TN. (Early Tennessee Land Grants LDS film 10002736) He also signed the Petition from French Broad and Holston Country in 1813 with Stephen and Amos Lovelady. ("Petition from Fr..Broad.and.Holston Country Sept 22 l8l3" (Ansearchin' News v.13, 1966))

In l815 Obed and his family of nine members were enumerated in Monroe Co.(Ala) Miss. Territory. He purchased land in Shelby County. Ala. in 1819 as shown by records in the Cahaba Land Office. The tract book for Sumter Co. Ala.shows that Obed puchased land in Township 21Rnage 3 West from the United States In 1830. In 1827 Obed was appointed guardian of Mary and Anny Lovelady, children of Stephen Lovelady. The securities were William Lovelady and James Moore. April 4, 1831 Obed presented his account for final settlement of his guardianship. Obed and others in his family- Aaron and Rhoda Crowson, William Calloway, Cyrus Lovelady, West Lovelady and Leroy Massengale all acquired land in Sumter Co Ala. He sold land in this section on Booka Creek in 1837. Obed is shown on the 1840 Noxubee, MS census, living side by side with West and J.L. Lovelady. Obed had 13 slaves as did West, and J.L. had 15. (this is undoubtly John Scott Lovelady and the researcher misread the L for S.

This day came into open court John L. and Jesse W. Lovelady Administrators of all and singular the goods.Chattels & credits of Obed Lovelady deceased and presented the account and vouchers for final settlement And it appearing to the satisfaction of the court now here that due notice had been made for more than forty days before this 21day of July .AD. 1845 notifying all persons interested in said estate to be and appear before the Judge of our said Court on this day and continue ths 22 day of this onth if so long it sould require to settle up the administrators and I John J. Beauchamp Judge of the Probate Court in and for said county having given due notice by advertisement in three public places in said County one of which was at the door of the Courthouse in the town of Macon in said county for more that ten days before that a special Term of the Probate Court of Noxubee County would beholden at the Court house of said county on the 21 and 22 days of July AD 1845 for the purpose of settling up the administration upon said estate and said settlement having been continued from the said 21 day of July 1845 to this day being the 22 day of July AD 1845 and upon Inspection and examination of said account and vouchers numbered as folloes to wit: No. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13, 14,15,16, 17,18, 19, 20, 2l,22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 31,32,33,34, 35,36, 37,38,39,40,41,42,43, 45,46,47, 48,49,50,51, 52, 53,54, 55, together with 5 per cent in the way of commissions for administering said estate upon the sum of $9100.91 ($455.45. l/2).being in the whole to $2333.20 1/2 and it appearing to the court that the said administrators are chargeable with the sum of $9100.91 on which said amount the sum of $671.51 is charged in the way of lnterest amounting in the whole to $9792.42 from which is deducted the aforementioned sum of $9333.20 1/2 leaving a balance with which said administrators are chargeable to wit $7454.22 and it appearing to-the satisfaction of the court that a-the -sum of $550 is due W.D. Lovelady, $550 due Marshall Lovelady, $550 due Curtis Lovelady, $550 due Martha Jane Lovelady due said- hiers to make them equally advanced with the others.or.$500 each with Interest from .17 Nov 1843 being to each $50. amounting in the whole to $2200.00 and deducting said amount from the sum said administrators are chargeable which leaves a balance of $5254.22 in the hands of said administrators. And it appearing to the satisfation of the court now here that there Eleven heirs of legatees of said Estate. It is therefore considered by the court that said administrators pay. to each of said heirs the sum of.477.65 1/2 and to the four above named the several sums of $550 in addilton thereto and upon the paying and discharging the -said several sums as aforesaid. It is ordered adjudged and decreed that the said administrators __hence discharged and that they go hence -

Ordered that John J. Beauchamp be and he is hereby allowed Three dollars per day for four days Issued services as Judge of Probates amounting to Twelve dollars to be paid Out of any money in the County Treasure not otherwise appropriated.

Notes:

Lovelady is a small, quaint community in Southern Houston County founded by Houston and Great Northern Railroad investors as lines were built through a grant of Cyrus Lovelady. The post office opened on November 8, 1872 and the town soon had a livery stable, stores, hotel, school and churches. During the next two decades, the town saw phenomenal growth as families moved in and built homes and businesses. A devastating fire in 1903 destroyed a whole block of businesses. As the businesses were rebuilt in the next several years Lovelady reached the summit of her development with businesses flourishing for two blocks on either side of the railroad and depot station. The town incorporated in 1927 and became the trading center for all the territory around until the age of the automobile which lured people to towns beyond Lovelady for merchandise and entertainment. Cotton and farming was replaced by ranching, putting gins out of business. Lovelady is now a center for ranching and pulpwood production. In the 1960's another great fire claimed the north block of stores putting several merchants out of business yet again. However, in the 1970's, these deficiencies were overcome by the excellent school system, an energetic Lion's Club, Garden Club, a forward thinking City Council and Mayor, a thriving bank, active churches and a steadily growing population of persons leaving city life for simpler, more comfortable living in a small town. Lovelady celebrates one of the largest events in the area, "Lovefest'' every year on the second Saturday in February.

Notes:

Jesse W Lovelady was born in 1807 in East Tennessee, the son of Obediah Lovelady and Christian Mahan. I believe that his full name was Jesse Ware Lovelady. The location was probably in Jefferson County since the family settled in that area in e late 1700s. The Lovelady family moved to the Bibb-Perry Counties, Alabama after the War of 1812. He married Wealthv Ann Jones, daughter of John Jones and his wife, Fanny in-about l824. It is not known whether the Jones family came from Tennessee with the Lovelady and Mahan families. It is quite likely however, since John Jones named his "beloved friend" Obed Lovelady as executor of his will.
Jesse and Wealthy were shown in the 1830 census of Perry County, with three sons. However, our records show them to-have been the parents of two sons and one daughter born before 1830 in Alabama. They are Lucinda, born 1825. who later married Jesse Lagrone. 4 June 1839 in Noxubee. Mississippi; Obediah M.. born 3 January 1827 in Perry County, later' married to Elizabeth Ann Hester; and John C. born 1829. It is my belief that son Obed's middle name was Mahan and John's was Christian.
On January 3.l83l, Martha Jane Lovelady was born while they were still in Perry County and daughter Frances came along in 1836.
By 1840 Jesse's father Obed was in Noxubee County, Mississippi along with his uncles Wesley and John Scott Lovelady. Jesse may have been in Kemper County or arrived shortly thereafter. Daughter Mary L. was born l841in Kemper County: This area had opened up after the Choctaw Cession of 1832. The area was already quite well settled. but after the Cession. there was a lot of advertising in Alabama newspapers to 'come and settle'. It was the practice in those days to send a family member along with the slaves, to clear the land and build a house for the family to come to. It is not known. but seems likely, that this practice was followed by the Lovelady family since we know that they were 'well off'.
Jesse settled in Kemper County and three more children were born, Jesse Alexander Archa. called "Doc". born 31 August 1844, named Archa for his grandmothers brother Archimedes Mahan. Son Israel Ware, born 13 December 1846. named for his uncle Israel Jones and his grandmother Ware, and lastly daughter Wealthy Ann born in 1852.
Jesse prospered as a farmer. He was also very active in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was a licensed exhorter. This was a step below an ordaind Minister of the Gospel, much like a lay-pastor would be today.
The War Between the States hit hard. Kemper County Mississippi sent more soldiers to the Confederate cause than any other county south of the Kentucky River. John C., "Doc" Lovelady and their sister Martha Jane's brother-in-law Henry King Houston were all in Co K of the 43rd Mississippi Infantry, King was killed in May 1862 and John C was killed in the Battle of Corinth Ms which took place Oct 3-4 1862. Also killed in the battle of Corinth were King's brothers Will and "Doc" (Eugene) Houston.
The grieving families were also strained financially by the war. Wealthy Ann went to her reward on 29 November 1871 and Jesse was left alone.
About 1872 he took a second wife. Mrs. Martha J. Johnson. nee Haskins. To this union was born Sally Carnelius 26 December l873 and John Coleman b 1876. The name Carnelius sparks some interest since the name Cornelius appears in other Lovelady families. Is this perhaps a surname?
Jesse W. Lovelady died 31 October 1883. The Chancery Court Minutes Volume A 1881-1900 Kemper County refer to the estate of Jesse and list the following heirs. J.A. Lagrone. J.A. Lovelady, Israel Lovelady and (whereabouts unknown).Eugenia, Henry and Jesse Saunders.

Jesse Lovelady left the following will, which was not accepted as valid by the Kemper County Chancery Court, minutes Vol A page 61.

Notes:

Due to a land sale of James Jr that John Reedy found and a 1820 census for James Sr, we think that James who went to Collins Co, Texas, was indeed, James & Nancy's son. I assume that Amos also had a son James since there was a confusion of the two.

from Karl Kiser (3/2/10) James Lovelady jr is not a son of James Lovelady sr (Nancy probably Linville?) according to Wilma Moore. She researched the issue and concluded that James jr is the son of Amos son of Marshall. The use of sr and jr can also mean older and younger rather than father and son. James sr would then be a second cousin to James jr.

note, through all the letters and research of the three Lovelady sisters, and James and Nancy, nothing indicated there was more than the three girls who all died as young women.

"James Lovelady never had a middle name. Last night I dug out my photos from Oct. 1997 when I went to Fitzhugh Cemetery. I used shaving cream on the tombstones that I photographed. They are clear as day. His name is "James Lovelady"; no middle initial.

I have all kinds of records on him, including Mexican War, Civil War, land records, and his Lovelady bible records. I have been to the cemetery and photographed his grave as well as those of other family members. He has never had a middle initial of "L" or any other middle initial.

The "junior" designation/reference to him in Missouri church records is most likely to distinguish him from the older cousin James (***your line*** ) in the same congregation."

"further comment is in order on Thomas Lovelady's diary, transcribed by Gordon K. Lovelady, grandson. The diary is the one priceless shred of evidence that links James Lovelady to Sevier County, Tennessee, thus enabling descendants to trace his origin. In a March 1863 diary excerpt, Thomas recounts riding his horse through Tennessee, crossing the Cumberland Mountains and the Little Tennessee River, finally arriving in Sevierville<\m>his father's boyhood home - where he meets his aunts (unnamed, but the only Loveladys still in Sevier County: Elizabeth, Mary Jane, and Nancy). In addition, Thomas notes some other family relationships which are very helpful as well. Without his son's diary, James Lovelady's connection to East Tennessee most likely would never have been known or documented due to an 1856 Sevier County Courthouse fire which destroyed many early records."

"In 1891, almost everybody in Rocksprings lived in tents. The first churches met in tents. Mrs. A. F. Mayes recalls when the members of the Church of Christ first met for services, THB Lovelady was a devoted Christian, and the first thing he did when he moved to a new place, was to get a church started. He got five members to met in the Loveladys' tent. They were Mrs. Ira Wheat, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Sweeten, and Mr. and Mrs. Lovelady. Late in the fall, Mr. Lovelady heard Brother John S. Durst at Junction, and he got Brother Durst to come to Rocksprings to hold a meeting. He preached several days, and Mrs. Charlie Cupples was converted. There was no place to baptize, so Brother Durst took his hack and Mr. Lovelady took his wagon, and they when to Pulliam, a stream of water near Barksdale, where Mrs. Cupplies was baptized. It took three days to make the trip, as they had to work the road most of the way."

Obituary for Thomas Henry Benton Lovelady

He was a grand, nobleman of God, and a valiant soldier of the cross, has ended his labors and laid his armor by and gone on to this eternal reward. His spirit lifted the tenement of clay and returned to God, who gave it, on Friday, January 31, 1919. Brother Lovelady was born in Jackson County, Misouri, August 7, 1840. His parents moved to Texas in January, 1846. Here he grew to manhood. When the war broke out between the states he enlisted in the confederate army and served four years. While he was a soldier boy he heard David Lipscomb, who was so noted, esteemed and loved for his work's sake preach the gospel of the Son of God, and he obeyed it. Hence forth, throughout his earthly pilgrimage the word of the Lord was the lamp unto his feet and the light for his pathway. When he returned from the army, he began showing his parents and brothers and sisters the most excellent way, that he had found and had the inexpressible joy of seeing them all turn to the Lord. He was married to Miss Delilah Brown, a most excellent Christian girl, on April 20, 1865. To that union ten children were born: three died in infancy and seven grew to manhood and womanhood. One of these, a daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Wilmeth, crossed to the better land in 1917. The sainted wife and mother was released from earth's sorrows and entered heavenly bliss on April 27, 1910.

Brother Lovelady settled in Bell County, Texas in 1868. Here he lived for twenty-one years and established a reputation as an honest, industrious, truthful man and an humble devoted Christian. He did what he could to build up the cause of primitive Christianity in his community an din the regions around. In 1889, he moved to Rock Springs, Texas, near the Mexican frontier. He went to work again to plant the seed of the kingdom in a virgin soil. He made sacrifices that would put thousands of professed Christians to shame to have the gospel preached in the region. I don't mean to say that he did all of this work along. He was foremost in planning the work and enlisting the cooperation of others. A church was built up at Rock Springs, and a good meeting house put up, and near two hundred persons were turned to the Lord within five years. For several years he served the church as one of its elders with Brother J. D. Pepper. In 1909, he removed to Elfrida, Arizona. He again found himself in a community where there was no church. He set about with his old-time zeal and determination and soon had a church set in order and a meeting house erected. All of his children became Christians, when they were children in their early teens, and his grandchildren are doing the same. After the death of his wife, he lived among his children, six of whom survive him. John lived at Elfrida, Arizona, Mrs. Nannie Edwards lives at Phoenix, Arizona, Albert, Daniel, Mack and Eugene live in El Paso, Texas. At the time of his death he had forty-five grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Besides, he also had four brothers and their families living in Clay County, Texas and one sister, Mrs. Henson and her family in Bell County, Texas. His body was laid beside his wife's at Elfrida, Arizona.

He deserves more than a passing notice. I would not hold him up as a perfect man. He had weaknesses and frailties in common with all of us. But this splendid man was a joy to all that knew him; he was so bright and cheery and good and true and faithful. He was firm in his convictions, unmovable where principles he held dear were involved, but kind and considerate of the weaknesses and limitations of others. His love and sympathy and understanding of the struggles and hopes of the individual members of the church found a response in every heart and endeared him in a rare and sacred way to the lives he touched. He leaves to his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and to a devoted and numerous host of friends the rich legacy of a pure, spotless, godly, devoted Christian life, beautifully and faithfully lived. What a legacy is the memory of such a life. While earth is the sadder, lonelier, and drearier to us by the loss of such an one, heaven is brought the nearer, and is made the dearer to us. While he leaves a vacant chair and vacant place on earth, he fills a vacancy in heave - the mansion of bliss that was prepared for him. Then into our sadness and sorrow there beams the gleam of happy hope that we shall again blend our voices with his in praises of him who wipes away all tears from our eyes. By one who loved him upon earth and who hopes to join him in heaven.
