William Stone, born 1723; married Hannah Conway. "On 20 December 1747, William Stone, Planter of Prince William County, Colony of Virginia, leased from John Dagg of Prince William County, shipwright, for the consideration of rents 125 acres of land, being part of a tract of land granted to Joseph Chambers lying between Carter's Run and Piney Mountain, during the natural lives of William Stone and Hannah his wife, paying unto the said John Dagg 450 pounds of tobacco and 5 shillings About 1760 or 1770, William Stone removed with his family to Surry, North Carolina. In 1780 a deed was made to William Stone for 280 acres in Surry Co NC. See deed book in Dobson. The Census of 1790 for the Salisbury district of Surry County shows: the William Stone family (three males over 21, three males under 21, four females over 21). Son, Ezekial, born in Fauquier County, 1756, enlisted for Revolutionary War service in Surry, North Carolina, in 1774; died in Marion Co., TN, at age ninety-nine [letter, Mary A. Saunders (Chattanooga, Tennessee) to Charles H. Stone (Charlotte, North Carolina), 11 June 1937]. Conway Stone, born 1761, served from Granville Co., North Carolina, in the Revolution. Conway married in Monroe Co, Tennessee, and his brother Ezekial certified to his marriage in 1845. The pension of Ezekial was in Marion Co., Tennessee. Children of William and Hannah (Conway) Stone: sons John, William, Ezekiel, Ephriam, and Conway; daughters, Polly, Hannah, Nancy, and Sally [from family records]. Ezekiel Stone's revolutionary war record (letter furnished by Veteran's administration, 28 August 1936): Ezekiel Stone volunteered in Surry County, North Carolina, and served with the North Carolina Troops as follows: from sometime in 1774, three weeks as a private in Captain Richard Good's Company under Major Joseph Winston and went out against the Tories; from sometime in 1776, three months as Orderly Sergeant in Captain William Dodson's Company, Colonel Joseph William's Regiment, went on an expedition against the Cherokees and assisted in destroying a number of their towns; in 1781, two tours, one of two weeks as a private in Captain William Bostic's Company under Major Joseph Winston, and the other of ten weeks as a private in Captain Humphrey's company, Colonel Francis Lock's Regiment. From 1784 to 1795, Ezekiel was in the Union District, South Carolina; in Sevier County North Carolina (now Tennessee) 1795-1816; in Bledsoe, Tennessee, 1816-1819; in Marion, Tennessee, from 1819 to his death in 1855. Ezekiel married Jane Woods about 1779; son William (born 1791) was a Captain in the Creek War and was made Brevet General for gallantry at the Battle of the Horseshoe; served with General Jackson in the Louisiana Campaign, and was elected to Congress in 1836 and 1838.

Diana,

There are several records from Surry in the new book that I am about to publish which prove the relationship to William. One Tax list from Surry has Ezekiel living with William in 1772 along with William Jr. He stays in Surry tax list until 1782, less his absence in the war. As you probably know he moved to Union County SC in 1784.

Ezekiel signed an affidavit for Conway (Conaway) Stones RW Pension record it was proof of a marriage. This allowed Conway?s wife to collect his pension after his death. He states in the affidavit that he was present at Conway?s marriage in Surry. At the time Conway was living with William Sr. In his RW pension Ezekiel states he was born In Fauquier County 1756. The only Stones of Tax Age living in Hamilton parish are Thomas Sr., Thomas Jr., William, and John. I have the Tax list from 1751. I also have a deed for Thomas Jr. and William leasing land next to each other on Carters run 1747. That is now in Fauquier.

I do want to clear up a long standing tradition which is in error. William never married Rhoda Pryor. That William and Rhoda Married in 1772 in Orange County. William and Family are in Surry County at Blewes Creek at the same time. I have records in deed form of William and Hannah selling land in Surry in 1786 and moving to Randolph County. Deeds show Conway moved there with them. William died in about 1788 and Hannah in 1792. Conway sold William and Hannah's land in 1793. John, William?s son, also moved there in 1792.

Also the will of 1819 is William's son will not his. The book Stones of Surry has several other errors.

William did not move to NC in 1770. William received a grant in Granville in Sept 1758 and moved there in April 1760 or earlier. I have the grant record and the survey from 1760 and his grant Feb. 1761/62. His father Thomas Stone had died in Aug of 1756 and William inherited some land. He is added to the Prince William, Later Fauquier Tax list, the same day his father?s inventory was accepted. The land was sold in August of 1758.

Lastly his brother John moved to Laurens SC that is also well documented. To be clear I have all kinds of evidence he was in Fauquier after William moved and stayed there until 1775. His move was directly to what is now Laurens County. I have deed and a Power of Attorney to prove that John Stone in Fauquier and John Stone in Laurens are the same person.

How far back does Ruth have to go I can place William?s father as Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish birth year as 1699.

Only circumstantial evidence exists placing him with the Stone of Poynton Manor and Gov. William Stone. But it is fairly strong.

Notes:

Thomas Stone. We know that John and William were brothers, and we think they may have had a brother, Thomas. However, we have not been able to ascertain the identify of their parents. We use Thomas Stone here as a place-holder.

John Stone, possibly son of Thomas Stone, born in Fauquier County, Virginia, abt. 1725; married --- Corder, born about 1730, presumed to have been a daughter of John Corder. John Stone and his brother William are said to have been among the first settlers in Surry County, North Carolina, possibly in or before 1765.

That John Stone, father of Enoch, married a Corder is a matter of conjecture, apparently based on the fact that he named his third son Corder. Additionally, it is said (but not verified) that John's first son, Enoch, had a son named Thomas Corder. Record of the marriage has not been found, however.

John and his brother, William, are said to have come into Surry (then Rowan) County, North Carolina, from Fauquier County, Virginia. Of this, there seems to be fairly good evidence. A John Stone, a William Stone, and a Thomas Stone had established themselves in Fauquier's Elk Run district by 1748. Butlers, Conways, and Corders also resided in that district. William married Hannah Conway and had, among others, Ezekiel Stone (born 1756) and Conway Stone (born 1761). Among soldiers in the War of the Revolution, we find Ezekiel Stone, who volunteered from Surry County, and Conway Stone, who volunteered from Granville County, North Carolina. Additionally, Conway Stone is named in the will William Stone made in Surry County on 23 March 1819. That William and Thomas were brothers is supported by property records of Fauquier County (see below), but no such evidence has been found in Fauquier to support a brotherly relationship between William and John. For this we rely on the account written by Jane Elizabeth (King) Stone in 1906.

John Stone and brother William were probably Baptists. Says the author of Stones of Surry:

When Baptist Ministers began to visit and preach in Virginia, they gained many ardent supporters and from 1760 through 1780 there was a large organization of Baptists traveling through Virginia; a goodly representation went to Southern Virginia and Western North Carolina. The Stone family caught the fever and named children for the prophets of old: Ezekial, Enoch, Ephraim, etc.
John may have been a preacher. There was in 1786 a John Stone among the Baptist Ministers of the eleven churches in the Yadkin Association. However, we have found no evidence to corroborate that John, father of Enoch, and John, the Baptist Minister, were the same man. Surviving records suggest that there was more than one John Stone in the area [i.e., in the Yadkin district] during the second half of the eighteenth century.

The Census of 1790 for the Salisbury district of Surry County shows an Enoch Stone family with one male over twenty-one, one female over twenty-one, and three females under twenty-one. Thomas Stone, born about 1767, possibly in Surry, North Carolina, married Sarah Corder. Is reported to have "gone west" (probably to Tennessee) about 1812. Thomas and Corder Stone witnessed indentures for Davis Nores and Robert B. Purkins (Perkins) in White County, Tennessee, 13 August 1816 (Deed Book F, page 8) and for John Trap and John Lollar, 18 March 1818 (Deed Book F, page 185).

Thomas Stone.
Thomas Stone, believed to be the son of John Stone and his first wife, was calculated to have been born in 1771 in Surry County, North Carolina. 246 Thomas was apparently
married twice during his life. He married first to a woman named Sarah "Sally" Corder.

Sarah was also a native of North Carolina. Although no record of their marriage has been found, it is believed to have taken place in North Carolina prior to their move
to Kentucky.

On 21 April 1792, Thomas Stone and his older brother, Corder Stone, witnessed a deed in Surry County, North Carolina between their uncle, Daniel Barrow, and Mr. Edward Lovell. 244 Sometime after this, Thomas and Sarah, along with his brother, Corder Stone, left North Carolina, and after spending a short period of time in Tennessee, moved further north into Kentucky. Although Thomas and Sarah remained
in Kentucky for several years, they eventually moved south into Tennessee, where they settled in White County. Thomas Stone acquired 684 acres of land in White County, Tennessee on 10 May 1808, which was situated on Cane Creek, a branch of Caney Fork of the Cumberland River. 251 Thomas and his brother, Corder Stone, were later found on the 1812 list of taxable property in White County. 245 Thomas Stone?s first
wife, Sarah Corder, is believed to have died in White County, Tennessee.

After his first wife passed away, Thomas married for a second time in about 1824 in Tennessee to a woman named Elizabeth Williams. 249,250 Elizabeth, who was a native of South Carolina, was calculated to have been born there in 1793. 246 According to the 1830 federal census of Tennessee, shortly after their marriage Thomas and Elizabeth settled on a farm in Jackson County. 252 Thomas, who was a farmer and Minister by trade, subsequently died in Jackson County, Tennessee.

NOTE: Unfortunately, several of the children enumerated on the pre-1850 censuses of Jackson County, Tennessee did not match up well from census to census. As a consequence, additional research is needed to identify all of Thomas Stone's children from his first marriage.

Those children listed below, however, are either known, or are considered very likely to be children of Thomas Stone and his first wife, Sarah Corder. The exact order of birth
of some of the below listed children is not known, however. Although most genealogies indicate that Nancy was the eldest child of Thomas Stone and Sarah Corder, this appears to be contradicted by indenture between Ireby W. Stone and his father, Thomas Stone, which was entered into on 5 March 1814. Because of the date and contents of this indenture, it would appear that Ireby may have been born as early as 1793, and therefore the eldest child.

Corder Stone, believed to be the son of John Stone and his first wife, is believed to have been born in about 1769, probably in Granville County, North Carolina, where the
family was residing prior to moving to Surry County, North Carolina in 1770. Corder Stone and his younger brother, Thomas Stone, witnessed a deed in Surry County, North Carolina on 21 April 1792, between their uncle, Daniel Barrow, and Mr. Edward Lovell. 244 Sometime after this, Corder and his brother, Thomas, left North Carolina, and after spending a short period of time in Tennessee, moved further north into Kentucky. Corder was later married on 18 August 1800 to a widowed woman named Mary "Polly" Mason in Lincoln County, Kentucky.
Several years after their marriage, Corder and Mary moved south into Tennessee, where they settled in that portion of the state that was later formed into White County in 1806. Corder and his brother, Thomas Stone, were later found on the 1812 list of taxable property in White County.
Corder, who was a farmer and Minister by trade, is believed to have died in White County, Tennessee sometime during the period 1843-1845.

William was a school teacher, farmer, constable, and Justice of the Peace for 20 years from 1840 to 1860 in Stokes County. This family is documented by Jean Stone Hall in her book "Stones of Stokes." The Old Stone Place in Stokes County is presently owned by a descendant.

William Stone, the son of John Stone and his second wife, Bethsey Curry, was born in Surry County, North Carolina on 3 March 1787. 272 He was later married to a woman
named Edney Barner in North Carolina on 22 February 1811. 273 Edney, who had been born on 21 June 1791 in North Carolina, was the daughter of David Barner and Martha
Gresham.

Sometime after their marriage, William and Edney settled in Stokes County, North Carolina, where they appear to have remained throughout their married life together.
Although William was principally a farmer by trade, he also served as a School Teacher, a Constable, and a Justice of the Peace in Stokes County. Edney subsequently died on 10 March 1861 in Stokes County, North Carolina, while William
died there on 29 November 1863.

Ezekiel Stone was an early settler in Floyd County, KY, arriving by 1810. Records show he was a Baptist minister and circuit rider for the Burning Springs Church in present-day Salyersville, KY, and the Buffalo Shoals Church near Paintsville, KY. Ezekiel and Edie relocated to the Tug Fork area of present Wayne County, WVA (formerly Cabell County, VA) in 1836. By 1853, they were living in Lewis County, KY, near their eldest son Thomas Stone Sr. (b. 1803), a large landowner, and his numerous descendants.
Edith ?Eady? Stone?s maiden name of Duncan is based on tradition.

Ezekiel Stone, the son of William Stone, was calculated to have been born in 1776 in Surry County, North Carolina. He was later married in North Carolina to a woman named Edy. 284,285 Although some individuals claim that Edy?s maiden name was Duncan, this has not been confirmed to my satisfaction. Sometime after their marriage, Ezekiel and Edy moved to Kentucky, where they are found in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 census enumerations residing on a farm in Floyd County. By the time the 1840 census was taken, however, they had left Kentucky and were found residing with their son, James, in that portion of Cabell County, Virginia that was later formed into Wayne County, Virginia in 1842 (now within West Virginia).

According to the 1860 census enumeration, however, Ezekiel and Edy had moved back to Kentucky, where they were residing in Lewis County. Although both Ezekiel and Edy are believed to have died in Lewis County, Kentucky, their exact dates of death have yet to be determined.

NOTE: Although some individuals claim that Ezekiel was the son of William Stone and Hannah Conway, this is not accurate. William and Hannah?s son, Ezekiel, was born in 1756 and died in 1855 in Tennessee. William Stone and Hannah Conway did have a son named William, however, and this William did have a son named Ezekiel. This Ezekiel Stone is currently believed to be the Ezekiel Stone who was enumerated on the 1800 census of Surry County, North Carolina, and later moved to Floyd County, Kentucky.

The offspring listed below as (female) was abstracted from available pre-1850 census enumerations. This is also believed to be one of Ezekiel and Edy?s daughters, but has yet to be positively identified. The 1810 census of Floyd County, Kentucky shows males 3001 - females 201. The 1820 census of Floyd County, Kentucky shows males 031101 - females 1111. The 1830 census of Floyd County, Kentucky shows males 00011001 - females 00011001. James Stone. Not confirmed. We see two possibilities in the attempt to discover his identity: First, a James Stone married Sarah Denny in Surry County, 10 February 1808. Since Elizabeth and William (James' purported siblings) also married Dennys, we would be inclined to think that this James was son of Enoch and Nancy (Anthony) Stone. However, at least five individuals have submitted pedigree charts to the LDS Ancestral File showing this James (born in Surry in 1783, died in Jay County, Indiana, 22 May 1848) to have been the son of William and Rhoda (Prior) Stone (for whom they have provided no lineage). They show Sarah Denny, born in Surry about 1787, died in Jay County, Indiana, 3 October 1846, the daughter of Azariah and Sarah Wise (Felton) Denny. This Azariah, according to the charts, had thirteen children, including a daughter, Nancy, born in Surry about 1791 (name of spouse, if any, not given), but no son named Azariah. Azariah, father of Sarah, is shown in the Ancestral File to have been son of Samuel and --- (Southard) Denny, born in Albemarle, Virginia, about 1745. The second possibility is posed by Jane Elizabeth (King) Stone, who wrote (in 1906):
"James Stone, Enoch Stone's brother, married Martha King, daughter of John and Elizabeth King, and moved to Indiana about 1830." Unfortunately, Jane's statement could have referred either to this James (brother of Enoch, Jr.) or to James, brother of Enoch, Sr. (son of John). The Ancestral File shows James, born in Surry about 1800, died in Bloomington, Greene County, Indiana, married to Martha King, born in North Carolina about 1807, died in Bloomington about 1863, with one child: William Pierce Stone, born in Indiana in June 1829, died in Newton, Texas in 1905. It gives us no lineage for either James or Martha. On the other hand, only one of the eight marriage "records" in the International Genealogical Index (which is just about as reliable as the Ancestral File) show a date of marriage (1824) that would work for someone born as late as 1807; the remaining seven show dates of marriage for the couple ranging from 1797 to 1810, leading us to conclude that the James, who married Martha King, was more likely the son of John (as is represented in Stones of Surry).

James Stone, the son of William Stone, was born on 15 December 1778 in Surry County, North Carolina. He was later married on 10 February 1808 in Surry County to a woman named Sarah ?Sally? Denny. Sarah, who had been born in about
1789 in Surry County, North Carolina, was the daughter of Azariah Denny and Sally Wise Felton. She was also the sister of the Nancy Denny who married James Stone?s brother, William. Several years after their marriage, James and Sarah moved to Ohio, where they settled in Gallia County. They eventually moved west into Jay County, Indiana, however.
Sarah subsequently died in Jay County, Indiana on 3 October 1846, while James died there on 22 May 1848. Both were subsequently buried in the Lancaster Cemetery at
Salamonia, Indiana.

William Stone, the son of William Stone [sic] (SEE NOTES OF HIS BROTHER JAMES), was born in Surry County, North Carolina. William was enumerated on the 1800 federal census of North Carolina as having been born between 1774 and 1784. He was later married on 12 June 1809 in Surry County to a woman named Nancy Denny. 296 Nancy, who was also a native of Surry County, North Carolina, was the daughter of Azariah Denny and Sally Wise Felton, and the sister of the Sarah Denny who married William Stone?s brother, James.

Although I have not been able to substantiate it, a number of researchers claim that William eventually moved to Ohio, where he is said to have died. The only census I have been able to find William on was the 1810 census of Surry County, North Carolina, however.

Conway Stone, the son of William Stone, was calculated to have been born in Surry County, North Carolina in 1786. He was later married on 5 March 1820 in Surry County to a woman named Elizabeth Nelson. 296 Elizabeth, who was also a native of Surry County, was calculated to have been born there in 1805.

Although Conway and Elizabeth appear to have remained in North Carolina for a number of years after their marriage, shortly after the 1830 census was taken they apparently moved to Virginia, where they settled on a farm in that portion of Logan County, that was eventually formed into Boone County in 1847 (Boone County is now situated within West Virginia).

Both Conway and Elizabeth are believed to have died in Boone County, West Virginia. Conway is believed to have died there prior to 1870.

Ephraim Stone, the son of William Stone, was calculated to have been born in Surry County, North Carolina in 1792. He was later married on 5 January 1821 in Surry County to a woman named Catherine ?Caty? Crouse. 296 Catherine, who was also a native of North Carolina, was calculated to have been born there in 1802.

Although Ephraim and Catherine later moved into the state of Georgia, they appear to have only resided there for a few years. They eventually moved to Tennessee, however, where they settled first in Bradley County, but later settled on a farm in Cumberland County.

Ephraim died on 22 February 1877 in Cumberland County, Tennessee. Catherine, on the other hand, was last found on the 1880 census of Cumberland County residing with her son, Wesley.

Just prior to the War of 1812, William joined the military forces under Gov. William Henry Harrison of Indiana, and fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe against Tecumseh's
American Indiana Confederation. He later served in the Creek Wars and subsequently received a commission as a Brigadier General. In 1815, he served under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans, which was the last major battle of the War of 1812. During the period 1836 to 1840, William represented Tennessee in the United States Congress, after which time he retired to his farm in Marion County, Tennessee.

Enoch Stone and his wife, Nancy Anthony, had a male child who was enumerated on the 1790 census as having been born in Surry County, North Carolina during the period 1774-1790. Although the identity of this child has yet to be determined beyond doubt, there is a reasonable possibility that his name may have been Ezekiel, and that this was the Ezekiel Stone who witnessed, along with Enoch Stone, the will of William Stone on 23 March 1819. 56 Unfortunately, no additional information has been found concerning this individual.

Although seven of the children listed below were named in William Stone's will, census records indicate that William and Mary may have actually had as many as nine children. In Charles H. Stone's book, "The Stones of Surry," he states that William and Mary had a daughter named Fannie who married Milton Flippin, but does not mention that they had a daughter named Nancy. 5 There is an older female who shows up in the 1830 federal census enumeration who was not listed on the 1820 census. Whether this female could be the Fannie Stone mentioned by Charles H. Stone, or whether the census enumeration is simply incorrect, is just not known at this time.

As far as the 1840 census is concerned, it indicates that William and Mary Stone had two more children between 1830 and 1840. Unfortunately, the 1840 census does not match up well with respect to some of the female children listed on the 1830 census.

Regardless of the above noted discrepancies, this write-up will reflect that in addition to the seven children listed in Williams' will, he and Mary had two other children, the youngest of whom I am fairly certain died at an early age.

I think that the rest of the folks are about to settle themselves in this county, and I think there is still room for you.
You made some figuring about my sweet potatoes. I have some; if you will come and see me any time between now and the first of May; I could find as many as you can eat.

Research Notes:
Reuben's place in the family is not determined, but because he named two children Conway and Elizabeth, because his father has a cousin "Reuben," because of the fact he lived in Johnson Co, Missouri, as did Conway Sr., and others, it is likely he is from this branch of the family, However, he could perhaps be the son of a different son. Until there is more enlightenment on his parentage, he is attached here.

Howdy. I have been surfing the net during my work hour and came across your family history pages for the Stone family. After much reading I cannot for the life of me see the connection between your family and mine, however, I am quite certain that we are connected. My ancestor is a Reuben Stone born 1799 or 1801 (depending on the source material) in North Carolina. One of his sons was named James Conway Stone and Reuben Stone lived in Monroe County, Tennessee until pre 1860 when he migrated to Johnson County, Missouri (where a family headed by Salathial Stone was quite prominent). Do you know of a connection between our two families?

Note: With regard to Salathial Stone, I have not yet determined how he fits in. His father was Jonn Stone, died in 1812 in Guilford Co, NC, mentions Salathial in his will. I have only a few in Guilford, a surname Anthony and Bounds who did marry into Stone family, but no connections found yet.

The following line mentions the Way famiy, who married into the Corder Famiy who married into the Stone Family. It also mentions the Williams family, which also married into the Stone family. I have some Anthony, Corders and Bounds in Guiland Tennessee, and Bounds is another family that crossed paths. Ellyson also, probably the line of Allisons in this file.

Seeking help with corrections or additions for the children and grandchildren of William and Jane Stone of Cane Creek region of Putnam County, Tennessee. I am a decendant though their granddaughter Polinia Pearlie Patton who married Luke Johnson.

WILLIAM STONE and JANE WELCH
William Stone Born 1799 Green County, Kentucky Died 16 March 1883 Baxter, Putnam son of Rev. Thomas Stone, a Free-Will Christian Baptist Minister, and Sally Corder. Married Circa 1829 probably in Jackson or White County near Cane Creek.

Jane "Jenny" Welch born 1805 Rutherford County, North Carolina and died after 1880 daughter of John and Mary "Polly" Anderson Welch. Jane Welch had twin children out of wedlock before marrying William P. A. Stone.

Families associated with the Stone-Welch family were the Corders, Huddlestons, Barnes, Bohannons, Maxwells, Pattons, and Choates


In some pedigrees found on Ancestry.com and LDS submission sites, William's wife surname is given as "Ashford" with a marriage date of 1 January 1836 in Cookeville, Putnam, TN. This is an error. In Sumner County TN this marriage is recorded, not in Putnam County and William Stone married Jane "Welch" not Ashford. In most records William Stone has a P. for middle initial. How ever in the 1860 Census his initial was given as A.

The History of Putnam County by Walter S. McClain and published in 1925 stated that Jane Welch's father John Welch came from North Carolina and settled two miles south east of Cookeville about 1820. Chancery Proceedings after his death show that he had accumulated about 750 acres of land in the county. Much of this land went to the illegitimate grandchildren of his daughter Jane "Jennie" Welch who later married William P. Stone.

14 Dec 1853 William P. Stone may have been a preacher like his brothers Corder and Thomas also. A marriage record in White County shows that John Johnson and Ollay (Allie) Broyles were married by a Rev. William Stone.

1854 Deed book A page 65 Putnam County TN David Nichols sold 10 acres to William P. Stone for $32 on Falling Waters bounded by Thomas Stone's corner to John Pennington's line. Dated 9 Dec 1854

1854-1855 The Tax Book Records for 1854-1855 showed that William P. Stone owned 70 acres in District Two worth $300.00 and paid $1.65 in taxes

1866 Stone Association of Baptist Churches was formed comprised of the old Caney Fork Church and Cane Creek Baptist Church. Leading preachers were Thomas Stone and Corder Stone. It remained an Independent Association until 1918 when it joined Tennessee Free-Will Christian Baptists.

25 April 1868 deed book F page 258 William P. Stone to son Thomas D. Stone 197 acres in District 1 where "now lives" bounded by David Bradford, John West, John. Hawes, John Carr, Silas Gentry, William M. Gentry. Dated 25 April 1868. Wit: Amos Maxwell and Crawford Bohannon

15 June 1869 Thomas D. Stone deeded 197 acres in District 1 to William P. Stone "my Father" on 15 June 1869. The land was bounded by David Bradford, John T. Haws, John Carr, Lewis Gentry and Silas Gentry. And recorded in Book AA page 17.

15 December 1869 Deed book G page 62 Putnam County William P. Stone sold to his son Thomas D. Stone fifty acres on Cane Creek which were originally owned by David Patton, for $250. The property was in Civil District No. 16 and was recorded in Book G page 62. R.L. Gentry and L. R. McClain were witnesses to the deed. William P. Stone probably moved at this time for in 1875 a deed to James W. McHenry states "William Stone's old home tract".

1870 U.S. Census of Putnam County, 1st District Household 179 Post Office Cookeville. There he owned $800 farm and a home worth $500. He is enumerated between son Hiram Stone and daughter Margaret Patton. Next to the Pattons was his son John Stone. His sons and son-in-law were farming his lands. The census taker recorded William's middle initial as "A" which is clearly a mistake. The census taker also gave the initials HW to son James Hiram. Age was 71 (1799) born in KY Jane Stone age 65 (1805) born in NC.

1876 William P. Stone according to a deed recorded 21 Dec 1876 in Book C page 129 lived just north of his son Thomas D. Stone in District 16. He

The Bohannons married into the Welch family and the Barnes family in North Carolina. Judith Bohannon married Isaac Welch, Jane Welch's uncle. Thomas Barnes married Alice Bohannon. Thomas Barnes was the grandfather of Lucinda Huddleston, John's sister-in-law.
In the 1850 household of Jesse Bohannon there is a young woman named "Dancy" Bohannon born in 1830 that may be Derassa.
The only Derassa in the 1850 Census was the 4 year old daughter of John and Jane Julian of White County, TN. He was a Minister of the Gospel and farmer and officiated at the wedding of John's 1st cousin William W. Stone and Eliza Jane Henry in White County. This unusual name is found in the region. Derassa Julian the daughter of Rev. John Julian would have been young but old enough to have a daughter born in 1859. John?s second wife, Margaret was also born in 1846.

He was born 1882 and remarried several times after the death of Famie. Mat Lock and wife (3) Sarah located in Lebanon, Wilson County in the 1920 Census living at 340 North College Street. He was working in a spokes factory as a carpenter. In the 1930 he is listed as living with wife (4) Florence in Wilson County. The 1910 census lists Famie R Lock as 27 years old with Mat J living in Civil District 18, Putnam, TN. They had been married for 5 years and he was a farmer on rented land. She is listed as the mother of four children however only three are included in the census. Famie Patton died from complications of childbirth. She is buried in a small cemetery at the end of Verdie Patton's land in Bloomington Springs, TN. It is not marked. When she was married to Beverage Pippin, he was charged with carrying a pistol Sept 12, 1899. He went to trial on Jan 10, 1901 and was found not guilty May 8, 1901. Famie was the baby of the Maggie Stone family. Her nephew Verdie Patton remembered his aunt as a small pretty woman.

She was first married to Robert Fulton Lemon who died 28 February 1878. She is buried at Ripton Cemetery KY. Thomas and Mary had 7 children In 1900 she said she was the mother of 11 children 8 still living.

1878 Deed Book B page 702. Thomas D. Stone had earlier on 5 Jan 1878 conveyed 50 acres to his children. This land was originally owned by his father William P. Stone and was located in Civil District No. 16. Adjacent property owners were Minerva S. Stone his wife, S.M. McCaleb, and David Bradford.
1899 Thomas D. Stone died in Repton, Crittenden, KY and is buried in the cemetery there.

Sparks was a house carpenter. She married at age 13. In 1930 family was living at 508 Laurel Street in Cookeville where they rented a house for $15 a month and he was employed as a building carpenter.

He was a Minister of the Gospel. 1930 US Census of Marion, Crittenden, KY he is married to "Elma" she said she was married at age 21 (1912) He said he was first married at age 23 (1910). He was a machine mechanic and his two brothers Edward and William were living with the family as single men, Edward was a lawyer and William was a farmer. They were all living on the family farm. Virgil has three children in his household. Family did not have a radio probably no electricity. He had at least 3 children

o William Denton Stone born 4 April 1895 Repton, Crittenden, KY died 27 September 1968 Boonville, Warrick, Indiana. Married Oral (unknown) born 28 Feb 1911 died 20 Nov 1998 Boonville, Warrick, Indiana. In 1918 said he was farming for himself and supporting his mother Mary. He said he had weak ankles, blues eyes and brown hair. 1930 living with his bother Virgil as an unmarried farmer.

Enoch H. Stone enlisted in the 1st Middle Tennessee Cavalry Regiment,U.S.A., on July 22, 1862, at Nashville, Tennessee. He was 34 years old,was born in Jackson County, Tennessee, and was a farmer and a teacher byoccupation. He had grey eyes, brown hair, a fair complextion [sic], andstood five feet four inches tall.

In September 1862, Enoch was listed as a Corporal in Captain Blackburn's Company, 1st Middle Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, which later became Company A of the 5th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, U.S.A. His promotion toCorporal dated from September 9, 1862, and his horse and equipment wasfurnished by the U.S.

In March 1863, Enoch was listed as "absent" and had been sick in ahospital in Murfreesboro since March 21, 1863. The following month he waslisted as "absent" again but this time he was on detached service inCompany I.

On August 5/6, 1863, he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in Company I.The letter ordering his promotion read:

On a muster dated January and February 1864, it states that Enoch lost inaction one horse and two Colt pistols, which were stolen. The same islater stated on a muster dated March and April 1864.

Nevertheless, on a Field and Staff Muster Roll, dated July and August1864, Enoch was listed as Acting Regimental Adjutant and the order(Special Regimental Order No. 29) promoting him to this position wasdated July 31, 1864.

From the time that Enoch enlisted, until he resigned his commission, hewas only listed as "absent" due to illness once. It is, however, a bitdifficult to determine exactly where Enoch was during the course of thewar since the various companies of the the 5th Tennessee Cavalry Regimentwere oftentimes detached and either served as semi-independent commandsor were otherwise attached to other commands. But, on August 8, 1864,after having been elected County Court Clerk of Putnam County, Tennessee,and having served a little over two years, Enoch tendered hisresignation. The order (Special Order No. 129) discharging him from thearmy was dated September 10, 1864, but his name still appeared on CompanyI's Muster-out Roll at Pulaski, Tennessee, on August 14, 1865.

A copy of Enoch's letter of resignation, along with his military andpension records, was enclosed from the National Archives in 1981 and theletter reads:

in letter by Enoch Stone to Alene in 1963, Enoch referred to a picture, stating:
However, I had an old picture of our grandfather Stone, and his first wife, Eliza Maxwell Stone [Eliza Maxwell], our grandmother, and she is the one that died out West and was buried at Steelville, Crawford County, Missouri, while on their way from Kansas back to Tennessee. She certainly did marry a Union sympathizer, as the writing on the back of the enclosed picture will show."

Letter by Enoch (son of Cicero) to Arlene on 11 Mar 1963 quoted a letter that Enoch Herschel wrote to his brother Elihu while Elihu was living in Kansas, on 9 Apr 1882.

To allay all doubt as to Enoch Herschel Stone [Enoch Herschel Stone] being your grandfather, I will quote from an old letter I have here from him written to Elihue Stone [Elihue Stone] his brother, while he Elihue lived in Kansas

Quote: "Cicero still lives at Bloomington and Vick
lives with him. Newton is there going to school.
Herschel is still living at his Uncle Geo.
Anderson's. Aut is now at home. Moyers lives close
to me and farming. Cleopatrae & Omega, Euclid & Mary
are all at home growing finely. Minerva has only had
two children. Mary is the youngest will be 7 years
old the last day of July."

This old letter was headed White Co. Tenn. and dated
April 9, 1882.

Now quoting a little further from the same old letter,
Quote: "I suppose Phama, wrote you about the death
of Nelly Moyers, she died last January at her Uncle
Geo. Anderson's with consumption. John her brother
came to see her while she was sick, and I think she
died the next day after he left."

Other-Begin:
mentioned in letter from Cicero to his son Enoch. Then quoted in a letter from Enoch to his cousin Alene in a letter 3 Jan 1963. He was naming those who had died since he had written a letter 28 Feb 1877 to Aunt Margaret and named his father.

Enoch goes on to write, "Now, as to Grand Pa Stone, he was in the Union Army and fought in the Civil War, and my father said he was a captain (2nd Lieutenant--FWW). I have an old picture of him and Grand Ma (Eliza), taken when they were young, and he is dressed in a Captain's Uniform (?--FWW). His brother Uncle Elihu was with Sherman on his march to the sea. Well, like all soldiers, I guess he had to do what he was told."

Patton and Malinda Byers) was born in 1841 in Mine Lick (Baxter), Jackson Co, Tennessee; died on 05 Aug 1901 in Quebeck, White Co, Tennessee; was buried in Jerico Cem, Quebeck, White Co, Tennessee. To allay all doubt as to Enoch Herschel Stone [Enoch Herschel Stone] being your grandfather, I will quote from an old letter I have here from him written to Elihue Stone [Elihue Stone] his brother, while he Elihue lived in Kansas.

(dated Apr 9, 1882 from White Co, Tenn)
Quote: "Cicero still lives at Bloomington and Vick
lives with him. Newton is there going to school.
Herschel is still living at his Uncle Geo.
Anderson's. Aut is now at home. Moyers lives close
to me and farming. Cleopatrae & Omega, Euclid & Mary
are all at home growing finely. Minerva has only had
two children. Mary is the youngest will be 7 years
old the last day of July."

This old letter was headed White Co. Tenn. and dated
April 9, 1882.

Now quoting a little further from the same old letter,
Quote: "I suppose Phama, wrote you about the death
of Nelly Moyers, she died last January at her Uncle
Geo. Anderson's with consumption. John her brother
came to see her while she was sick, and I think she
died the next day after he left."

Enoch goes on to write, "Now, as to Grand Pa Stone, he was in the Union Army and fought in the Civil War, and my father said he was a captain (2nd Lieutenant--FWW). I have an old picture of him and Grand Ma (Eliza), taken when they were young, and he is dressed in a Captain's Uniform (?--FWW). His brother Uncle Elihu was with Sherman on his march to the sea. Well, like all soldiers, I guess he had to do what he was told."

and: I have wondered if GrandPa Stone had a brother named Alfred. Quoting from an old letter to his brother Elihue dated April 9, 1882 Grand Pa wrote, Quote: "I have recently learned that John Stone (Brother Alfred's son) was dead."
