  1. 1.  Michael Christian^ Shoffner, (immigrant) was born on 25 Jun 1721 in Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany; died on 25 Jun 1810 in Orange Co, North Carolina; was buried in St Paul's Lutheran Ch Cem, Alamance Co, North Carolina.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Immigration: 1758, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; from Germany
    • Will: 27 Sep 1810, Orange Co, North Carolina; written

    Notes:

The name was "SCHAEFFNER" in Germany and means woodworker or carpenter. The name was Anglicized after the family moved to America, and may have been spelled Shofer, Shoffner, Shaffner, or Schoffner as the various family branches preferred. Tradition states that they came to America with a kinsman, Malachi Fogleman, when he returned to Germany for the girl he had left behind.

The Shoffner's traveled with the Spoon's to North Carolina circa 1763.

    ===================

    findagrave:
Michael Shoffner was born in Germany in 1721. An exact date of birth has yet to be determined, further research is being conducted.

In 1751 he married Margaretha Fogelman, also of German birth.

Michael, Margaretha and their oldest four children immigrated to America in 1760. The family settled in the Orange County area of North Carolina. In 1849, this area of Orange County was formed into the present day Alamance County.

Additional children were born into the family after their arrival in North Carolina.

A death date of 10 Oct 1810 was given by a 5th great grandchild of Michael Shoffner's. However, the original monument was inscribed in German. It is possible that an error was made when the additional monument was placed. The dates on the monument will be honored.

Notes from Brenda Thomas, RootsWeb, WorldConnect:
Martin was seventeen when the Revolution started. An account by his grandson Loton Shofner states " Martin Shofner was actively engaged as a soldier in the War of the Revolution serving in the North Carolina Line. I have often listened to my grandfather as he told me stories of those troblesome times. Martin was a man of wonderful physical strength and great activity even down to old age. One story illustrates his great strength. He was a member of a regiment of calvalry. On one occasion a regiment of infantry, being encamped near them, sent a challenge to bring out their best man for a trial of strength and skill at wrestling. Grandfather was selected to meet their champion and after the match, came off victor."

    Post by Larry Shoffner:
Chris: There isn't a lot of information on Peter and his wife, Delilah, but here's what my research shows:
Peter was born on 20 Nov 1770 in what is now Alamance County, NC. He was the son of Michael Shofner and Margaretha Fogleman. He married Delilah Henderson, probably in 1794, with whom he had at least six children. The possible 7th child is Hezekiah, supposedly born in Bedford County, Tennessee, perhaps in 1822. Hezekiah reportedly married Emily Pitt in 1847 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, had nine children and by 1860 had moved to Dyer County, Tennessee. He is believed to have died sometime after 1880. As for Peter, he had moved to Tennessee in 1808 only to return to NC in 1812 to manage lands he had inherited from his father. Later he sold these lands to his brother, Frederick, and was back in Tennessee by 1820. His other children's names are as follows:
    1. Caty Lattimore; b. 1795; d. 1822
    2. William; b. 1797; d. 1879
    3. Plummer L.; b. 20 Mar 1811; d. 8 May 1888
    4. Gabriel; b. 1814; d. 1880
    5. Elvira; b. 17 Jun 1817; d. 25 Sep 1886; married Thomas Gore
    6. Elisabeth; b. 1819.
    Hope this helps some.

Michael married (1st wife) Shoffner about 1811. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    1. 36. Dorcas Shoffner  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1812 in Tennessee; died on 6 Jun 1894 in Union Co, Tennessee.

  4. 11.  Jacob Anthony, Jr Descendancy chart to this point (4.Mary2, 1.Michael1) was born about 1775 in North Carolina; died before 1840 in Tennessee.

    Notes:

Was called "my eldest son" in Jacob's will.

    Information from another researcher:
He was evidently the Jacob Anthony enumerated just over the line in Guilford County in the 1800 census, he and his wife both 16-26 and a young son under 10. He apparently went to Tennessee quite early, as a Jacob Anthony and a Nicholas Anthony appeared on the 1812 tax list of Bedford County, Tennessee. The 1820 Bedford census is incomplete, but he is probably the same Jacob Anthony who appeared in the Franklin County, Tennessee (adjacent to Bedford) census of 1830 aged 50?60. He was not located in 1840, and I presume he died in the 1830s. His widow was evidently Barbara Low. A "Mrs.. Barbara Antony" was in the 1840 Franklin County census with a household matching that of the1830 census. On 25 February 1845 the heirs of Samuel Low, one of whom was Barbary Anthony, sold land on Thompson's Creek in Bedford County to John Anthony.[17] Jacob and Barbara appear to have had four daughters in the 1830 census, but only one son. The son was evidently the John Anthony to whom the land was sold.

  5. 12.  Margaret "Peggy" Anthony Descendancy chart to this point (4.Mary2, 1.Michael1) was born on 18 Mar 1783 in Orange Co, North Carolina; died in Aug 1853 in Alamance Co, North Carolina; was buried in St Paul's Lutheran Ch Cem, Alamance Co, North Carolina.

Born about 1795 according to the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses of Bedford County when he was listed with a wife named Sally (born c1797 in NC). According to the Shofner book, which provided no evidence, this wife was Sarah Mitchell (1797?1884), buried with him in the Shofner Chapel, whom Adam married about 1819.[19] However, a marriage bond in Orange County, North Carolina shows the marriage of Adam Anthony to Sally Sharp on 24 April 1819.[20] Adam appears to have stayed in North Carolina through the 1820 Orange County census, and then moved to Tennessee. He first appears in Bedford County in the 1830 census. Adam died in Bedford County, Tennessee in 1878. There are several records of the settlement of his estate that identify his children.[21] Both he and Sarah are buried in the Shofner Lutheran Chapel graveyard there.

    Notes:

By the late 1850s, in his late 70s, he was suffering from some form of dementia. In September 1858 a jury was appointed "to examine the lunacy of Nicholas Anthony".[7] In October the jury reported he "was a lunatic and unable to take care of his business," and the court appointed his son Laton J. Anthony as his guardian.[8] Nicholas, who would have been about 78 at this time, died within a year, as his will was proved at the October court 1859, with the widow Sally Anthony and Laton J. Anthony appointed as his administrators.[9] The will itself no longer exists, but later court records make it clear that he left one piece of property to his children and his home place property to Sally during her lifetime with reversion to his children at her death.

The widow, Sarah, appears in the 1860 and 1870 censuses in the household of her son Laton J. Anthony. She evidently died sometime in 1873. A statement filed by George T. Anthony on 1 October 1872 states that his father Nicholas Anthony died in 1858 and his widow still resided on the property where he died.[10] An offer to auction the home place land date 4 February 1873 also mentions the land ?on which his widow resides.?[11] But a document dated 29 September 1873 speaks of the ?estate of our grandmother Sallie Anthony?, implying she was dead.[12] The settlement of her estate by her son Laton J. Anthony occurred after Nicholas Anthony?s death.[13] I failed to note the date.

At his death, Nicholas owned two pieces of property: 114 acres on Thompson's Creek in the 24th Civil District of Bedford County, and the home place of 198 acres in the 25th Civil District in Roseville. The 1860 and 1870 censuses show Sarah Anthony living in the 25th Civil District, and his children later stated that Nicholas (and later Sarah) lived on that property in Roseville. Nicholas Anthony?s lost will must have left the 114 acre tract in equal shares to his children, for they engaged in a protracted court case over the distribution of that land in the 24th District. Six of the children wanted to sell the property and divide the proceeds, while the rest preferred to partition the land. The records of this case clearly show the children (or their heirs) were splitting the property 13 ways because, before the case was settled, several shares and parts of shares were sold, in each case the shares being 1/13. For example, Henry Anthony sold his 1/13 share to George Thomas Anthony prior to settlement.[14] The case was in court before 2 November 1869 because on that date the court acted on the recommendation of a commission it had appointed to consider a partition of the property. The commission laid out a 2/13 partition for George T. Anthony (19 1/2 acres), who owned his own share and Henry Anthony?s share, and recommended the remaining 94 1/2 acres be sold.[15] The land was then sold to William Shofner for $3,780 and the proceeds divided 11 ways -- $341.39 apiece after expenses. George T. Anthony then immediately sold his 19 1/2 acres to the same William Shofner, completing the transfer of all 114 acres.[16] The case was settled on 1 September 1873 when the court clerk recorded that he was holding the money for each of the heirs.[17]

After Sally Anthony?s death (probably in 1875), the division of the 198 acre home place in the 25th District prompted a similar protracted court case, with the petition filed 4 November 1875. It stated that the land contained ?the home in which Sally Anthony had resided at her death and for years before.? Again, some legatees wanted to partition the land and others wanted to sell it and divide the proceeds. This time around, the children traded their shares beginning in 1870, with some shares changing hands more than once. By the time the petition was filed, Layton J. Anthony had acquired the interests of Frederick, Roddy, Mary, Jacob, Elizabeth, and Young Anthony, giving him a 7/13 share, and argued for a partition.[18] He eventually succeeded and ended up owning the family home which he apparently had never left. Note that there were a smaller number of litigants in the 1875 case, with only three of the Anthony children participating.

    Notes:

From Bob's Filing Cabient II (Bob Baird) (http://www.genfiles.com/anthony/anthonyjacob.htm):

Powell Anthony (c1799 ? aft1840) He is mentioned as a son of Jacob Anthony, his name given as "Paul Anthony", in the Shoffner book as "b cir. 1799, lived in Nordaway (sic) County, Missouri.?[22] I found no census record for a Paul Anthony anywhere in Missouri for 1830/40/50. However, he is listed as "Powell Anthony" in the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Orange County, with his age given as 30-40 in 1830 and 40-50 in 1840. That makes him too old to have been the male 16-18 in his father's 1820 household, though I could not find Powell Anthony in a separate household in 1820. As Paul Anthony, he was bondsman for a marriage in Orange County in 1831.[23] As "Powel Anthony", he was executor of the will of Letty Neece dated 12 December 1832.[24] I did not find him after 1840. As an intriguing coincidence, I note that a Powell Kimbrough, a neighbor of Jacob Anthony and brother-in-law of Frederick Moser, died in 1795.[25] Could this son have been named for him?

Find A Grave Memorial# 19568911 San Augustine, Aug. 11.-Another one of the veterans of 1836, Rod Anthony, died at his home three miles northeast of this place on the 7th inst. He was born on the 14th of April, 1805, moved with his parents to Bedford county, Tennessee, when quite a boy, and moved from there to San Augustine in 1832, where he has continuously resided since that time. He married Cynthia Brown in Tennessee when only eighteen years of age, by whom he was father of ten children, all of whom survive him, but the youngest is now forty-seven years of age. "Uncle Rod" as he has been called familiarly for many years, was always on the side of law and order. Once county judge, twice sheriff, he filled both positions creditably.

Mary had found her way to Texas where her brother Roddy was living, and had remarried to John B. Palvadore (Juan Baptiste Palvadore) on 12 February 1845 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Palvadore?s household in the 1850 census of Nacagdoches County showed a wife Mary (aged 42 born NC) and children: Mary (18), John (15), Polly (10), Rebecca (8), Eliza A. (5), Margaret (4), James (3), and Susan (1). All the children were shown as born in Texas except Mary and Polly who were born in Louisiana. Palvadore must have died not long thereafter, as Mary was shown as a widow in both the 1860 and 1870 census of San Augustine County. The 1860 census has her as age 52 with the last four children plus Peter Nicholas Pavadore, age 8. The 1870 census has her as age 59 with Peter still at home.

On 7 December 1870, Mary Palvadore, widow, of San Augustine County, Texas wrote a power of attorney to ?Roddy Anthony my brother to proceed to Tennessee [and sue Layton J. Anthony] for my part of the estate of my father Nicholas Anthony or my mother Sarah Anthony.?[25] Layton promptly bought her share.[26]

From Bob's Genealogy Filing Cabinet II:
His son James and Roddy answered questionnaires regarding their CSA service, providing us with his wife's name. James Frederick Anthony stated that "my father was old style Methodist Circuit rider... had often as many as 15 churches under his charge and preached every day in the week..."
[34] This statement also declared that William Horace Anthony was born at Thompson's Creek in Bedford County but lived most of his life in Moore [formerly Franklin] County, that he and his two older sons joined the 1st Tennessee Regiment in 1861 and that he served as chaplain in 1862, when he resigned on account of being afflicted with rheumatism, contracted in camp. James Anthony's statement also declares that his father was a "full blooded German", that all four of his grandparents came from Germany, one of his grandmothers being named Shofner.

A similar statement by Roddy Anthony declared that his father was a traveling minister in the Tennessee Conference. He made a similar statement regarding his father's ancestry. Roddy gave his father's middle name as "Harris" and James gave it as "Horace".

The move from Bedford County to Franklin County evidently occurred between the births of those two sons, each given the respective county as their own birthplace. James Anthony's statement mentions that his brother Nicholas A. Anthony also volunteered in the CSA in 1861 but was discharged after a few months with a disability.

A good deal of information on his family came from my father's correspondence with Lassie Munsey, a granddaughter of James Frederick Anthony. There is also a family Bible with all his children.

The following were answers on a questionnaire given by William Harris Anthony's son, James Frederick Anthony:

William Horace Anthony was born at Thompson's Creek, Bedford Co, TN. He lived on turkey Creek and Big Hurricane practically all his life in Moore Co., [TN]. He and his two older sons joined Peter Turney's 1st Tenn. Regiment (afterward designated "The 1st Confederate") in 1861 and he served as chaplain in 1862, when he resigned on account of being afflicted with rheumatism, contracted in camp. After serving as chaplain during the year 1861 he resigned in the spring of 1862, came home, and continued his ministerial duties to his death. William was a full blooded German - his grandmother & grandfather on both sides came from Germany. His grandmother on his father's side was a Shofner

A good deal of information on his family came from my father?s correspondence with Lassie Munsey, a granddaughter of James Frederick Anthony. There is also a family Bible with all his children.
